A quick question from a new player. When starting a new map, how can I determine the direction of water flow on coastal maps? It generally takes 2 or 3 hours of playing before the sewage overtakes the water input and I discover a major design flaw. I'd rather not have to do that.
When you are in the "Water Sewage and Heating" (or just the first two if you don't have Snowfall) and select a water pump or sewer outlet, you should see triangles on the water that indicate the direction and intensity of flow.

This seems like it should work, but it doesn't. I've tried several games on the Cliffside Bay map, and the pumps/outlets show nothing in the water. I've even expanded to the East and moved the intake as far as I can, but the sewage is overtaking my town long before I reach 6,000 population. (My latest attempt failed to get to 6500, and started dying off around 6320 probably because the sewage overtook the intake). I've got no DLC or mods.
It seems like the next attempt will be towers only and dump into the bay. Not exactly nice and environmentally friendly. Now, what your opinion on clusters of water towers versus a widely distributed system?
I did not have to use a lot of water tower together but i don't see positive or negative impact to use them in cluster.
As far I know there is no flow limitation on ground, neither in the pipe so as long as you pay attention of the noise, and pollution, I would say you are free to do as you wish .
I often scatter them around the map, like in reality.
If you have Green cities you can try to clean up the sewage with the Floating Garbage Collector where its flow out; or make a small pound just before the sea and put it in the floating things.
If you don't see any arrows in the water when you are placing your water pumps, then that means there is no current. Water pollution will always end up in your water supply unless your map has separate bodies of water.
