Q: Assigning a planet to a sector

I recently came back to look at 2.2. It changed quite a lot. However, there's no good way to tell what happened since the last time I played.

At the moment, I am playing an empire. I built outposts to cover two non-adjacent distinct areas -- one my core (starting) sector, and a second area near the galactic rim (named the Rim sector). When I've colonized planets in the core area, the new planet is added to the Core sector. I just colonized the first planet in the Rim sector, but the game created a new Sector for this planet. I want it in my Rim Sector. The UI doesn't seem to have a function to change sectors for a planet, at least not that I can find.

How do I move it? How do I prevent future colonization efforts from spawnning more sectors?

Sectors are created automatically now. Everything within 3 jumps of your homeworld is the core sector. when you create a colony outside that, it will be the capital of a new sector and everything within 3 jumps of that will be in the new sector.

How do I move it? How do I prevent future colonization efforts from spawnning more sectors?

As far as I can tell, whenever you finish a colony outside of current sectors, it spawns a new sector. A sector is includes every system within 3 jumps from it's first planet.

So, think about order you colonize it and maybe use habitats in strategic locations as sector capitals.

I could be wrong, but it seems once a sector is created it's permanent. If you colonize a few systems 4-6 systems away from another colony, but then put a ringworld or colonize something in the middle later they won't combine even if they are all within 3 hyperlanes of the new centralized colony. Makes for some sector gore once you get better habitability, habitats/ringworlds, or terraforming going when I feel this should alleviate the problem. This is on the Beta though so I feel this may be addressed soon if it's not working as intended.

Fah. I've had rough luck with finding habitable planets, much less in close proximity to one another. So, I'm stuck with hiring Sector governors willy-nilly. Very Fah. If it's going to create new sectors automatically, why doesn't it automatically assign a governor to that sector? Micromanagement. Triple Fah!

Once you get a feel for how sectors are created, you can plan where they end up and whats in them.

What is also different in 2.2+ is it isn't a very good idea to go bum rushing and colonising planets quickly. I find I can happily survive on just my homeworld for a decade or two, waiting for the pops to build up and industry to develop before colonising. Of course, go ahead and grab those systems, but don't feel rushed to settle the planets, it only gimps your homeworld if you have too many and that's the most important planet for a long time in any game.

However, if you feel like the current sector system isn't working right for you, I use a mod that makes the core sector 5 jumps and the frontier ones 3 or 4? Makes for much less sector gore and most of your first colonies will be within this sector anyway.

Also, you can simply ignore the fact they exist at all and not bother with governors if you choose, you're not really losing out on much most of the time.

That doesn't really work if you are using an empire that habitability matters for or going tall. I'm not skipping a size 25 gaia just so I don't get sector gore when I can finally terraform the missing links 100 years later.

This is pretty much the answer.

Sectors are entirely irrelevant now. Technically you can enable sector AI, but the new economy really punishes generalization. You need to manage each planet individually. So enabling sector AI is a bad idea.

The only real role for sectors is in assigning governors, and let's be honest... leaders are perhaps Stellaris' most forgettable mechanic. (Maybe a tie with governments, factions and mandates.)

Personally, I'm genuinely puzzled as to why they're still in the game. My advice is to just turn off the sector map-mode and ignore them altogether.
