It worked for me. I got "Retake Greece" (I forget the exact wording, but that was the goal), then Asia Minor coast, then convert Asia minor coast, then take Anatolia. I got one for restoring the pentarchy once I'd destroyed the Ottos and was pushing into the Levant. So, for me at least, it all worked correctly.

I reinstall the game after every major patch (like 1.7) and the only time they've worked for me properly was in the pre release version. So, you are just a fortunate son! I wish they worked for me. They do not come in a logical order and I think they won't even come up if say you own 1 of the 3 provinces it wants you to take and such. You got lucky! There have been threads about this very issue.

Some of the required provinces are wrong or weird though. The only one I can think of right now is "retake Tunis", which requires a province in Anatolia and a weird spacing of the actual Tunisian stuff.

Edit: This was meant to be a reply to mrguymiah. I apparently can't use buttons right.

On the whole "Roman" versus "Byzantine" debate, it's important to remember (as has already been stated) the term Byzantine was invented by the West, hundreds of years after the fall of Constantinople. They wanted to distinguish the more Hellenic culture of the later Greek-speaking empire from the original Latin one.

But more importantly, "Rome" is an idea. The invading Turks didn't see themselves destroying the Empire, but converting it to Islam, just as Constantine had converted it to Christianity.

They probably didn't update it with all the new provinces either...gah, I love Byz but I don't like playing it while the dlc is borked to hell.

The Romans were ridiculously Hellenized from the start and always had a pretty huge fetish for Greek culture. It's our Western exaltation of Latin that stems out of Catholicism that makes us think of the Greek speaking Eastern Empire in the medieval period as some sort of pretender when it was always the Roman Empire. It's very complicated and actually rather interesting to look at the West's distancing itself from what they called Imperium Graecorum but it really was the continuation of the Romans.

You get the decisions and such, but according to the wiki or somewhere, I forget, you are supposed to get free cores for completing the mission. I did Basileus, have the DLC and did not get the free cores upon taking all the required provinces all the way from victory in Greece, Anatolia to Spain and victory in Iberia, etc. So I'm pretty sure it's bugged. What's more, if I hadn't had to core any of those, I probably could have conquered all of the HRE and much of Russia as well. Manpower, armies, money were no problem. Admin points were the holdback and having administrative ideas doesn't make up for the additional coring costs I had to spend.

If that's what the reward is supposed to be, then I was gyped. : P As for me being lucky, I guess I was. I'm sorry everyone else was having those problems. XD

And you others are correct that the events no longer point to the right province id's since the map change. I had TWO Antioch's last game because they originally just renamed Aleppo when Anticoh wasn't its own province. XD

Yes, we were supposed to essentially get the provinces for free by achieving the "victory for X" missions.

And for sure, there needs to be a Roman Empire achievement. It doesn't have to be Byzantium doing it. I'd be fine with someone else picking up the mantle. If Byzantium didn't have such a nice flag and appealing Imperial Purple color I probably wouldn't have bothered playing them.

In fact, if they'd let us pick our own colors and change the flags up a bit, I'd probably play a lot of countries I otherwise don't play mostly for precisely these reasons.

Uh, you aren't supposed to get free cores. The missions give you claims.

I wouldn't support any of them until they fix the Purple Phoenix first...have you guys played it, how often do the missions show up? Do they show up in a sensible order (as in, not a later mission first, like taking Aleppo)?

The issue with this is that allowing a mission to appear requires at least one of a set of provinces. These sets are supposed to make it so the missions appear in a certain order, but the problem is that some provinces (such as Athens) enable multiple missions and the mission selection doesn't choose the most logical one.

This problem is made worse by the fact that owning a single province in the set of target provinces for a given mission disallows the mission.

I'm pretty sure just changing every 'OR' in the event files with regards to those sets of provinces to 'AND' would fix this, because then you should need all of the provinces in order for a mission to appear, and you could pick the mission even if you only own one out of the target provinces.

Without some fix like that, the thing to do in the meantime if you have multiple potential Purple Phoenix missions and one that makes no sense is chosen is to take the mission, cancel it, and hope the RNG gives you a more appropriate one after a year.
