I'm not prepared to invest 40 $ in a paradox game because of the somewhat chaotic post release development of CK2 and EU 4 and the DLC churning scheme. I will grab Hoi4 on a sale a few month after release.

Actually that's a good idea. Nice little reward for all the modders of paradox games.

No special icon for anyone who made a mod for HOI III and released at least one version of it on every patch and expansion of the game?

I didnt get bored, good old times :D

I said after HOI 3 I would never preorder again. But I did for crusader kings 2 and EU IV. Partly as I cant think of many other games Like this so it was in support of Paradox. But indo think pre order people should get other benefits like say 10% of the next DLC
Also a road map of possible expansions would nice just so we know what we are signing up for

I agree with Totalbiscuit in general about pre-ordering, however [...]
I "kinda" agree with TB, and this sentiment, but up to a certain point. [...]

I think you completely missed the point TB was making. In the age of digital distribution, pre-ordering games is never in your interest.* By pre-ordering you are actively working against your own interest. Any pre-ordering, whether or not it is a good game is irrelevant, actively encourages this bad business practice to continue. Never pre-order.*

*Only exception which applies is if you don't have broadband internet and live in bumf**k nowhere with only 1 store selling games in the vicinity.

Hahaha, icon-tastic

Actually, this only holds true if you take a strictly individualist, self-centred view. If you have an interest in the ongoing performance of the studio and want to support them, then pre-ordering makes sense. I do agree that if you have a strictly individualist, self-centred view that it's not rational to pre-order in the age of digital distribution, but I (strongly but respectfully :)) disagree that this is the only sensible view to hold, particularly given the substantial body of evidence that as a species we're better modelled as an interconnected group of individuals that (to some degree or other, for the vast, vast majority of cases) rely on each other.

I don't think I fully understand what you are saying... Unless you are being altruistic, I don't see why you would want to support a studio through the pre-order model. Cooperation is fine, but it needs to work both ways. Pre-orders are a one way street. The consumer receives no benefit whatsoever, instead all benefits are accrued by the studio while the consumer is left with the risks. Unless you think the studio would not survive without your infusion of cash, there is no reason to give them money now instead of after release. The studio still gets your support, but the benefits and risks are shared. A much fairer exchange tbh. If it turns out to be a bad game, but you want to support the studio nonetheless? At least you'll know what you're getting yourself into. And you are only affecting yourself. Pre-orders and the bad business practices associated with it affect everybody.

I really don't understand why you'd wish to support a studio through pre-orders.

There was another thread on this, and not trying to get away from the purple heart icon ( ) but pre-orders can (and apparently do - I don't sell games for a living, but I've heard people that do say that they're helpful in asessing demand) provide some indication of demand for a title. Strong pre-orders make it more likely that DLC plans will get greenlit (and in the case of HoI, more extensive DLC plans - I can't imagine for a second they don't have any DLC ideas lined up) - so stronger pre-orders:

- support the studio (as you say, something that's unlikely to be an issue in PDS' case at the moment, although back in the day when things weren't so rosy I'd still get their games at launch but wait for a patch or two to actually play them with this in mind - as there just wasn't (and isn't) anyone that makes titles that match up to PDS')
- provide an indication of demand, that can give some sign of post-release support (launch sales obviously are important here as well, but pre-orders are, from what I've heard, used to help make early post-release support decisions). I don't tent to pre-order single-player 'story' games that I'm not particularly interested in post-launch support (Uncharted, Half-life and what-have-you), but will be more likely to pre-order games where expansions tend to make sense (and PDS games, as any CK2 player will tell you, are very ripe ground for post-launch support indeed - on that note, is there any strategy game, anywhere, that's ever had as much post-launch DLC as CK2?!)

Also, on Steam it often gets you 10 per cent off as well, which if it's a game you're definitely going to get in any event actually gives it a leg up even for the purely individualist perspective (and a much better model, from my angle, than the 'get extra digital doo-dads' approach that generally prevails on console). This 10 per cent discount is also a pretty decent clue that pre-orders are valuable to the studio above and beyond just getting the money a month or two earlier. And then there's the usual electronic doo-dads as well (usually sprites, music or an events pack for PDS titles, which I don't mind, but are never the reason I'd do it) - so it's not all negative. My last pre-order (EU IV) included the base game of CK2 in it as well as some electronic doo-dads, so while I was going to pre-order it any which way, I actually did pretty well out of it (and then, once I realised I liked CK2, supported the studio by getting most of the DLC).

Of course, one should never, ever pre-order a title they're not strongly expecting to play in any event, unless they really, really want to support the studio! If I wasn't really into WW2 strategy games, and had come off the back of HoI3 and didn't play EU4/CK2, I'd wait until launch and see what the reviews/community had to say, and would recommend that to anyone in the same boat.

And very happy to have my logic torn up, if torn up it should be :).

I "kinda" agree with TB, and this sentiment, but up to a certain point.

However, for things like this, for pre-ordering HOI4, I have a lot of faith in PDX at this point and would pre-order if it got me something extra.

Here's the problem. I had lot of faith in paradox because HOI2 was good, AoD was awesome, but HOI3 was shit*. For me it was a lost of $, and even considering I had it at discount with all expansions and mods already out. I'd be dead pissed if I'd got it at release. (I've played once without expansions, really?)
Now I'll probably try it at some friends, or wait for a proper review by people not fan[atics] or affiliated with paradox and if nothing work, even pirate it (if there's no demo) and play an hour or two before considering either buying or throwing it out.
Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about HOI4, but paradox gonna have to deliver a good game to get my wallet, not just make good ads and feed of my desires.

Guys pre-ordering is like having a one-night. You may be tipsy, she might say she's clean and take the pill, it might be safe to do it bareback and maybe you've done it in the past. But it still stupid not to use protection, and it's better to know it before the consequences.

*my opinion, and I stick to it

Yeah I really hate it when new and free content is added to my games.

I'm trying to think... Outside of maybe indies that are in perpetual alpha / beta, how many companies keep updating the exe and not charging people?

I think I'm gonna order it one way or another, hopefully we get some beta play by developers to show it off more before release. Even better I hope I get in beta.(fat chance thou I have no friends). But back to the point I will preorder if I like previous releases of a game I consider very good, total war titles are a prime example and even thou the latest version of rome (total wars version not pardadox's. good call not doing rome 2 paradox if total war version was any indication of the things that can go wrong)wasn't there best work I still liked the game. I usually wait for release to buy a game, but have preordered some games and probably would for HIO4 because of what I have seen so far.

As for a preorder bonus a sherman tank life-size model would be cool to put on my lawn. ;)

I'm trying to think... Outside of maybe indies that are in perpetual alpha / beta, how many companies keep updating the exe and not charging people?

There aren't many - the free-to-play crowd do, but that's a completely different business model. War in the East got a few decent updates post-release. Must just be that strategy developers are awesome ;). DriveClub has got a few pretty hefty updates post-release as well, but they're trying to establish a new franchise, so it's not necessarily the best example. Killzone: Shadowfall with it's 'all new maps are free to everyone' was a bit like that I guess. Shadow of Mordor got a photo mode?

That said, I can't think of another developer that provides anywhere near the consistency and quality of updates as PDS.
