Puppeted troops disappear after leaving Axis HOI4

I'm playing Italy and in the Axis faction with Germany.
I've conquered and puppeted (Reichsprotectorate) the USA, UK, and parts of Africa.
I've trained Divisions using puppet populations and their Infantry Templates.

When I leave the Axis my puppet Divisions disappear.

Why is this happening? I'd of thought they would remain loyal to Italy, is there a way to leave the Axis and retain my puppet Divisions?

They would have returned to their home countries via strategic movement. You should be able to Request Forces from them again and reincorporate them into your armies if they are still puppets.
