Slightly off topic, but while we're discussing dynastic in-fighting.

I'm thinking about the in-fighting problem (IE, the vassals going independant during squabbles problem). Yesterday, while I was playing England, I had a rather messy civil war break out, most than half of the island was suddenly fighting out.

Then things resolved themselves, and within a few years everybody had rejoined the Kingdom ((Except a region around Cornwall, which Germany had taken in the interim, which is cool, I suppose)).

Now, I know the "Everybody jumps in the Kingdom" feature in the current Beta is more than a little irritating ((See Barcelona, Naples and Brittany)), as it's happening to everyone so fast but..

Would it be possible to have events triggered by one vassal declaring war on another? Or Give the king the option of which side to take, as it is now, I believe this happens if there's duke on duke violence, but not if a duke is taking on one of his counts. If it were possible to get the same option of which side to declare war on (The King could theoretically go to war with his Duke on the count's side, I'm thinking).. things start getting interesting. Perhaps even the King decides to stay out of the whole mess.. both vassals go independant, work out the issue on their own, then re-join the kingdom again once the war is concluded.

Just some free associating.)

Would it be feasible to handle it like: a year's worth of gold, and a 1/3 of the ruler's piety and prestige? Are piety and prestige irrevocably tied to monthly increases? If so, it'll be extremely hard to make that matter and would be better to simply rely on a hard number to add/subtract, taking into consideration how strongly it affects the early game and how little it affects the late game.

Would it be feasible, for example, to have so that rulers with prestige less than, say, 100 get a fixed amount subtracted and rulers with prestige > 100 are subtracted by a fraction. We could replicate the coding for numerous events if it's complicated, but I think it would be worth it. I would hate for a 500 prestige king to lose 50 prestige in an overt civil war just so a king with 50 prestige isn't bankrupted. And I'd also hate for a ruler with 3 prestige to lose 1 prestige due to an overt civil war: he SHOULD have a prestige debt.
There are commands for reducing/adding prestige and piety that are also scaled to the ruler's yearly change, but not to the ruler's current value. So, for instance, you can redulce a ruler's prestige by 50% of his yearly rate of prestige gain, but you can't reduce a ruler's prestige by 50% of his current value. You cana do the same for piety.

The trouble is that you have to anticipate those anual rates. This becomes particulary tricky with piety since it's possible (even probable) that a ruler will have a negative yearly piety change value, so an event that is designed to penalise him would actually end up giving him a bonus (unless you script it very carefully.

For what you have in mind, it would be better to do it in a series of events that use fixed values and the one that would trigger would dependon the ruler's current values. If all else remains the same, it isn't much of a n issue to script 3 or 4 identical events that simply trigger at different levels and have the same effects (but scaled to the triggers).

It's a bit of a shame a new trait can't be added. I'd really liked to have seen a "disinherited" trait (or maybe it's there, and I am going mad and missed it) for when you change succession law. There could have been some cool events built around disinheritance & a great opportunity for realistic feeling overlapping claims that the new press court member's claim for province feature coul make use of. Oh well.

I'm just finishing a book on Byzantine history, and makes depressing reading following the death of Basil II...in other words the period in question for CK. But on the basis of that sad history, eventwise, the court intrigue and Duke v Duke fighting and challenges to emperor of Byzantium should be set significantly higher than other realms. It was infighting that killed Byzantium not the strength of the Turks.

It would be good to include some events that kick in during a succession, which might include:

-succession contested, by a relative, say if he's got more prestige and some cunning/underhand traits makes it more likely. Each vassal might check to support one or other & war breaks out. with the new kingdom rebuilding thing, the vassals will eventually repatriate so this is feasible IMHO

-Legitimise bastards reasonably often. So many notable rulers in middle ages were bastards who directly inherited the throne. They should bring a higher unrest quotient with them. Dunno if this can be done in scripting somehow. Johnny the Bastard King of Italy, ruled till the Syphillus his wench mother bore him with took him down, would be a cool addition to the family tree.

-On succession, if said succession includes multiple kingdoms, run a very small chance that the kingdoms will be split between siblings, despite the succession law in play, or have one kingdom split from the realm... it happened often enough historically to consider implementing. I suppose it might annoy people wanting to build a total european empire... but with claims intact on the breakaway kingdom, why it opens the door for more war, which is always good.

Cheers all

Then again, we now have an event starting rebellions in your demesne when you have a heretic province, saying that provincial population dislikes your tolerance towards heretics, most of the time just because you weren't given a chance to act! One should have a quicker way to respond to heresies, maybe at a greater price.
A small heresy suggestion - include one more for orthodoxy. Russian culture stands devoid of heresies due to their huge x10 MTTH for Bogomiles. In 13th century, Russia had their own grand Bogomil-like heresy, the Strigolniks. Basically, they opposed the official church, its haughty rituals and its secular riches. They should crack down clergy power, pump up peasant power and add ascetism and apostolic poverty.
I need to review the MTTH of the Heresy series anyway ;)

:eek:o I read somewhere that there was no bogomiles in Russia, hence the very high modifiers. Would you have a websites on Strigolniks or a reference for me please ? :)

Non Martial events

Personnally I also would like to see events that reward non martial courtiers or offer the court a famous religious or "scientific" (in brackets because medieval science was only develloping)

William of England had is coronation time/date "decided" by astrologer. Astrology could help a player (+ xxx gold/new tech/prestige) or hinder if the church discovers/dislikes (% chance heretic/excommed)

Famous bards could be "sponsored" (-xxx gold) to raise prestige or artworks commisioned (-xxx gold) for prestige. Patronage could also lead to discoveries in tech or schools/universities.

St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) might visit a court and inspire a King/Duke. (-xxx gold / + xxx piety)

Anselm (1033-1109): Proof of the Existence of God. and the Gaunilo's attacks on Anselm could lead to some interesting events: heresies/excommunication/piety gain...

The list of famous medieval thinkers/priests/artists could lead to some good events.... i'm not the events scripter at all but can do research if anyone needs.

Perhaps some in-fighting among the court officials. This would have VERY high MTTHs (they should happen once per generation at the very most). An equivalent event could be created for the other court positions, too...

You Marshal and Chancellor are fighting for supremacy!

Triggers:
{
Marshal has intrigue > 6
Marshal has traits Selfish OR Deceitful OR Vengeful (? Not sure about last one)
}
OR
{
Chancellor has intrigue > 6
Chancellor has traits Selfish OR Deceitful OR Vengeful (? Not sure about last one)
}

Lower MTTH:
Either of them has a Spy-education
Either of them has a high intrigue
Either of them has Selfish, Deceitful etc.

Higher MTTH:
Either of them has low intrigue
Either of them has Honest, Trusting, Wise etc.

Option A: #Take party for your Chancellor!
50% chance: Marshal dies
80% chance: Marshal gains trait "War Invalid"
Marshal gets -1 martial (loss if influence in general)
Marshal gets -1 intrigue
50% chance Marshal gets -1 intrigue
Marshal gets -0.5 loyalty
Marshal loses 50 prestige
80% chance Chancellor gets trait "Deceitful"
50% chance Chancellor gets trait "Selfish"
Chancellor gets +1 intrigue
20% chance Chancellor gets +1 intrigue
Chancellor gains 30 prestige

Option B: #Take party for your Marshal!
As above, except Chancellor and Marshal reversed, and Chancellor loses 1 diplomacy.

Option C: #Let them fight it out!
You lose 30 prestige
30% chance: Marshal dies
30% chance: Chancellor dies
10% chance: Marshal gains trait "War Invalid"
10% chance: Chancelor gains trait "War Invalid"
30% chance: Marshal gains trait "Deceitful"
30% chance: Chancelor gains trait "Deceitful"
30% chance: Marshal gains trait "Selfish"
30% chance: Chancelor gains trait "Selfish"
30% chance: Marshal gains +1 intrigue
30% chance: Chancelor gains +1 intrigue
Marshal loses 0.3 loyalty
Chancelor loses 0.3 loyalty.
Any comments on this?
The details are probably horribly unbalanced right now...

Right about bogomiles, and for strigolniks I've found this (in Pp. 106-116, point 9) http://pandora.cii.wwu.edu/vajda/russ110/t1_studyguide.htm as the only source in English, there are quite some more in Russian. Oh, and they're even mentioned in EU2 events, as they hadn't lost their actuality till 1531(see the link). They, for a change, are a strictly Russian heresy.

I'd like to resurrect a proposal I floated a long time ago. Can we add a character trait called "grudge" which applies to specific courtiers or vassal which the king has slighted.

Grudge would give a negative loyalty modification. But more importantly, it would also be a tag allowing one to code specific events applying to those vassals that the king has intentionally slighted, giving long to consequences to your actions.
It's a good idea in theory, but in practice it could be problematic if the courtier changes rules (either because of normal inheritance or being exiled/moving to another court). If we had this trait, such a slighted courtier would then hold a grudge against his every master. :p

That's a very good point. This is how I thought about solving it before. It should be possible to fire an event for every vassal upon a king's death, clearing grudges. In the same vein, it should be possible to fire one creating new grudges for all vassals upon the new king's rein--or just children who did not inherit.

I am sad to hear that new traits are not possible. I think something like this would make particular characters more interesting. It is always more fun if actions have consequences. If favoring one vassal really hurt enough permanently (or semi-permanently) many choices would have more bite. Problems couldn't be solved with one cheap purchase of loyalty.

Would it be possible to take over a trait? I'd be happy to see harelip go to do something like this.

With extreme reservations...

Yes, it's possible - although for Johan to authorise something like that would involve demonstrating that the new trait is so incredibly, overwhelmningly essential that it is manifestly insane to refuse to do it. Short of that sort of "pie in your face" proof, I doubt that he'd give official sanction for it...not to mention that it would then require a rather thorough and heavy editting job on the part of the event scripters (i.e. Cat Lord and I would need to be bribed extensively :p).

BUT...

The idea of firing events on something specifically happening to trigger it off (and have it only trigger once) IS NOT standard fare for CK and would require massive hardcoding work that I suspect would not be in the books. It would have to be something really earth-shattering to induce him to devote that amount of time (we're probably talking inthe order of 50-100 hours just of hard-coding...PLUS associated event scripting).

These events have been mentioned as missing several times. That is, wifes of Orthodox/Catholic husbands would take thier husband's religion.

There is 1 problem because you can only use set_to_realm_religion and not say any religion, these events will only fire if the ruler is of the same religion.

These are for the relatively unused religious technology events. Right now I don't have any particular ideas about formal_litergy or jubilee

While I can't think of anything for traits, for religion i can...so far my tests to work to get sunni/shiite religious wars won't work...

There is one trait however that could be added as there is no way to represent its impact: promise_breaker

To get this trait you'd haveto:
  • Refuse to honor an alliance
  • Refuse to honor your liege's call for troops
  • Breaking a truce
  • DoWing while your troops are in the target province already
The latter 2 have some in-game effects with increased BB, but many times this isn't a major deterent.
This trait would be a bad one to get, on par with kinslayer (or for some people crusader). It would lower prestige and (perhaps) piety annually (though moreso prestige), lower diplomacy by a huge amount, and give signifigant negative relation reactions (perhaps +1 intrigue because people aren't sure if you'll break a promise if they make one with you or not).

But why is this needed? Right now, the 1st two items on this list have little impact on the game, but they were seen as major slights when a ruler refused their responsibility. Same thing for breaking a truce and other unwritten rules of conduct. These refusals would stay with a ruler for the rest of their life sometimes haunting them no matter what kind of deals they would make. Right now, there really is no way to reflect this, except to some extent with BB, which partly goes to the next generation and also can be removed with high piety (high piety would not remove this stigma though).

Yeah, if any trait can be added to the game, promise_breaker/oath_breaker/dishonourable should be it. Maybe the arbitary
trait could be improved upon to do the job though?

Shouldn't be too much of a job for MrT or CatLord as the trait should be set to 'no' initially..... :D

I honestly think that the heroic amount of energy required to insert a "dishonourable" or "grudge" trait would be much better used creating events that we actually know will get used, things that will make the game truly unpredictable, exciting, and kill some of its tedium.

A new trait, outside of, I think, being rather historically inaccurate (for example, the most obvious "dishonourable/oath breaker" in the CK period would be Charles the Bad of Navarre, who went decades being catered to and courted by the French and English courts without almost no retribution or punishment for his immoralit yand untrustworthyness to the very end. Switching alliances, not honoring previous ones, disobeying lieges etc. was the rule of the day, and overpowering the effect of it due to a new trait would be historically silly and, more importantly, waste valuable time on things that could truly help gameplay.)

Even if these new traits were historically accurate or provided any benefit to gameplay, they would soon get internalized into CK as just another trait to deal with and studiously avoid, as opposed to a whole new events program which will be so numerous and interesting and unpredictable that it will greatly improve gameplay in general.

So, in short: energy much better spent programming new events and programming events constructed with dummy code in this thread.

Is there any possibility to have events that allow:

1) courtiers to overthrow the ruler (example: the marshal takes the county of the inbred and insane old and childless count)
2) vasals to go independant without war (example: the archbichop does not find any gain in being vasal of a crumbling kingdom, and wants to join the neighbouring kingdom)
3) the ruler to pass all titles on without the dieing (historical example: the Bulgarian king Peter II, decieded his brother Ivan Asen I to be more suited for the crown and passed it to him)
4) the children of a dead king to overthrow the current leader (historical example: the children of Ivan Asen I, were banished to Galich from their cousin usurprer Boril, but then with the help of Galich mercenaries took the crow from Boril)
5) to get a divorce (example: your wife is a childless slob, which you married to get her father's county, who just got a few sons. Why pay assasins when the pope can do the job for you?). or may be your wife to get a divorce (historical example: the Bulgarian king Samuil's son Gavril Radomir maried a Hungarian princes (I think she was called Maria, not sure), but later she didn't like her maridge and got it anulated by the pope)
6) to force your female vasals to mary(may be a random courtier) (example: tired of that amazonian countess of wherever? their lord should take care of that)
7) females(wifes/doughters/mothers/sisters) to inherit sometimes (in very special conditions but only if they are going to mary eventually (i'm not sure any of us wants the amazon kingdom of France for example)

I gess some of these features would be better as diplomatic actions (gain independance, get divorce) rather than events (so you can divorce any time you want, not when the event decides to sprung up). but something is better than nothing, i gess :D

There are currently no event effects allowing for:
- making someone a ruler of a country (other than essentially killing the ruler and allowing the normal inheritance law to take its course),
- breaking a marriage (other than killing one of the spouses).

Going down your examples, it would be:
1) Not per se, but you could theoretically have an event that changes law to elective and kills the ruler to achieve a similar effect.
2) It is possible - there are events making vassals independent. :)
3) Not possible.
4) Not possible. This can be simulated by normal game, though, especially now that you can make wars on behalf of your courtiers.
5) Not possible.
6) Not possible.
7) Not possible.
