Why not Central European for the West Slavs and Hungarians? Neutral enough, for all involved, though some may expect the Germans to be included in a group with such a name. Yeah, it's bland, but bland doesn't start flame wars...

But Central carries such connotations, Demetrios!!! Why are the Hungarians more central to the game than the Swedes, eh?

We should divide Europe into sections using precise longitude and latitude so that each of the 11 cultures get an equal portion. We should take care not to use Mercator´s projection though, since it´s a major factor in the Western opression of Africa.

That sound like the kind of compromise nobody's happy with. It'll probably lead to World War one.:D

Anyway, Hardu; with all the written material available to us from all parts of europe from 1066 on, I do not see the need to use a system of culture definition developed byt archaeologists precisely to offset the lack of written evidence in pre-literate cultures!

I'm afraid whatever way Snowball/Paradox do this culture definition thing with only 11 slots is going to be brutally unauthentic and generalised. Someone's bound to feel stepped on(hey, I already feel stepped on - Norway wasn't included in Sergei's list of areas getting "Scandinavian" culture...).

Did any of you actually see the :p in my post?

My suggestion is that we use pottery as the criterium for the cultural divisions of Europe.

Excellent idea! So we´ll have the Redware culture, Blackwareculture, Stoneware and Tinglazed cultures. Combine this with religions and we´ve got loads of re-combinations!!!

On Norwegian culture: Apparently, Sergei feels the Norwegians are "nekulturny"!!!

Oh, and just in case:p :D ;)

Don't know what those connotations are but the reason the Swedes are not central is because they are Northern!:D

On the other hand I actually took Hardu somewhat seriously...

Not only are norwegians uncultured, we are actually noncultured. Anthropologists worldwide must be baffled.

Yeah, many of the books I have read have been saying, there are many therories like taht they are actually aliens, orinsane humans. But they don't understand how it is possible to be noncultured:D I love historical linquistics, social, and history. The scientist are literally tearing their hairs:p

At least, American may be boor and uncultured but we do have the culture. Poor you!:D

Only read through first few pages etc... and I am not sure this is still relevant topic but I do NOT understand how a distinction can be made between Anglo-Saxon England, Low COntries etc... and Scandinavia.

These people could all communicate with eachother and all shared a very similar cultural background having all migrated from the same place only 500-750 years before...

If you are to distiguish the other Teutonic States from Scandinavia then why not between eachother as those nation considered "Germanic" are at least as dissimilar from eachother as they are from Scandinavia.

Also under the original cultural disribution scheme would you say England was closer to the Danes and Norwegians than they were to the Dutch or Germans? The same with the Eastern Scots and their relationship with the Norse than the Celts?

Cheers, Bart

500 years can do a lot to culture, I'm not sure how well i could communicate with a Tudor.

Potentially, the far north of England could definately get away with Scandinavian culture. The rest of England though would be a big mix of Scandinavian and German, with a growing amount of French...i.e Anglo-Saxon.

Yep, England was mixture of Scandanavian and German (slightly more German because they are Saxons, and the culture make up the foundation of Anglo-Saxon culture.) The closest English relative is Frisian and Dutch not Icelandic but English did mix many of words from Scandaniva. The culture itself is German on base, and added Scandanivan culture to it but that is an addition, and blend in with German culture.

I would say William the Conqueror's controlled land in England have French as one of the listed culture. Saxon earldom should not have french culture at all.

EDIT : Southern England should be German, and Northern England should be mix of Scandanvia, and German. Suggest that we use the map of Anglo-Saxon land and Danelaw. However, Danes tend to settle where there are no Saxons so there are still strong German in Danelaw so I suggest that York be Scandanvian and rest mixture of both.

Danelaw extended all the way down to (and including) the Midlands though, right?
