PU and inheritance!

Hello im a little confused about this so if im wrong PLEASE correct me.

The thing is sometimes you inherit a country completely, and other times you only get a PU.

I would like to have some reasoning about this, I think inheriting a country unexpected is one of the best feelings you can get while playing EU4, I once played Denmark doing stuff in Britain and the Baltic area and then i get a popup, "You have inherited the throne of The Palatinate." And im like HOLY SHIT praise lord Jesus, i just gained 5 cores for free somewhere in the middle of the HRE

So i would like some reasoning to this, so you actually can do something not only to get a PU, but to inherit a countries.

I think you can only inherit small nations. High dip rep and prestige should make it more likely and also having the same dynasty.

I think it has something to do with the relative size of the nations.
If you are bigger than them by a good bit, then you inherit.
If you are about the same size or smaller, then PU.

That's the logic I feel it is.

Well the problem is sometimes i am quite big and get a PU with a OPM and once i was Spain and inherited Bohemia, and there i did not even have the same dynasty, that was from a old patch tho.
