IMO, the game survives in spite of this forum, not because of it, from my PoV.
Let's be honest, the vast majority of people posting here are either looking for answers to something specific, or they're fully engaged in the bickering. Most players of most games don't spend a lot of time on that game's official forum.

We're pretty good at answering the specific queries, and the rest are, as I say, mostly inclined to take a side and pick up a keyboard. There's no in spite of or because of here, the game and the forum are separate ecosystems that overlap, but it's more like the forum community is contained in the game community.

And this is why, IME, PSAs and pretty much any other topics on this forum are generally rendered worthless.
While the grognards proudly bicker like children, the rest of us get turned off to the BT community, if not in fact the game itself.

I come back to check on progrssion of the game now and then and this board is just filled with bickering over minutae, just like BT TT in so many stores, with a bunch of supposed 'veterans' acting like children while yelling 'get off my lawn'.

Thankfully, after next week and a couple stability patches, I won't feel the need to read much here for a while again.
I must say that I vehemently disagree; while we do love to bicker and argue over who killed who rules/lore minutiae/implementations, very little of that is "bicker[ing] like children" - most of it is respectful exchange of ideas and interpretations of things that are by their very nature open to interpretation.

I find the Paradox forums to be much less like that than most of the Internet, largely due to the diligent efforts of our poor overworked moderators.

I think that there is a truth at the core of @MajorPrankster’s point, not in the bickering but that there are almost not general discussions accessible to newer players going on. I think that tends to come and go in waves, as people start asking questions and discussing new DLC, the front page of forum content tends to change.

I can post my Career Mode stream videos here so people can watch me "succeed" at not dying but not getting anywhere near a good score :) Then they can see even the veterans and the ones who stick around discussing things aren't necessarily "GOOD" at the game ;)

Any questions tend to get both fast, correct, and understandable answers, whether they are asked by old hands or newer players. That we tend towards discussing more esoteric parts of BattleTech lore in-between those questions is another matter, and something that do tend to happen with any IP that is as storied as BattleTech's.

I agree, but if you just click in here, there isn’t much being discussed that isn’t a deeper (less newbie friendly) conversation.

In my experience, that is part of the natural ebb and flow of video game forums with games getting periodic updates and DLC. I think it is more pronounced with this game because it is more niche than some of the others and therefore has less influx between sales and updates.

I’m not sure anything can (or should) be done about it, but I can see how this could be a bit of an intimidating place for those who are less obsessive about Battletech. :)
