Well, it's been a year since I played Victoria last, always preferring the 'little' guy. Canada, USCA, Japan [Well, medium guy in that case]. So a few days ago, I decided 'You know what, since Adam is thinking of making a Propaganda mod for Dictatorships, I should start a new game of Victoria to get back in the groove'. I decided, what the hell, I'll play as Prussia.

My first time playing as such a major player in the Industrial Revolution. I was surprised at all the events, and was worried I wouldn't be able to form Germany. Well, that came and went with no problem, and now despite having 50 badboy, everyone keeps trying to keep relations with me on good terms.

However. Capitalists have always been my bane. I prefer Socialist countries, dictatorships usually, because it's far too micromanagement-happy to actually get a socialist party in power. I like being able to use my own money and resources to quickly build and expand my industrial base. Any capitalists I used in the past have screamed PAPER while pushing a 'build a paper mill' button, and that's it.

This time I'm stuck as Laissez Faire, but my Capitalists aren't being completely useless. I have about 400,000 of the buggers, and they... they're building useful things. I said to myself 'I want a better navy' and they built me a Steamer Shipyard three days later. 'Huh, I could really use some dye, I don't have any RGOs with it', they build me a Dye Plant. 'Hmm, fuel using ships coming up so--' and they built a Fuel Refinery. They even built me luxury clothing and furniture factories.

All that being said, do Capitalists from different culture types act differently? I've never seen this discussed before, but this is the FIRST game I've ever seen where Capitalists have done more than build paper mills. Even Adam's experience has been all paper.

Also, it's good to be back. :)

Glad to see that capitalism is working out for you ;)

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. In the end though, the benefits outweigh the costs no matter what.

In my current game as Belgium, it's not going nearly as well. Belgium doesn't really need a paper and glass mill in each state. I wish they were steel factories instead, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

I seem to have good enough luck on factories. Sometimes, it's kinda random, but they come through in the end. Have yet to run into the glass and paper problem. :p

Existing factories put capitalists off building new ones of the same type, IIRC, so I try to slow them down after I get everything I need. :)

The biggest problem with letting capitalists control industry is the fact they are very very reluctant to expanding factories.

As has been said already, capitalists probably won't expand unless all types of factories are built in a state.

Isn't it possible to get capitalists who like expanding factories if your market structure is monopoly (or it could be one of the other ones).

Otherwise, this is why I tend to jump to interventionism. :)

Well I wasn't asking for a guide, just wondering if people noticed certain country's capitalists acting differently than others.

To everyone else, thanks for the heads up. Interventionist, eh... Yeah, that's my favourite hands down. If Planned Economy had a small bonus to factory/rail/upgrade costs it would be nice too, because otherwise it's like State Capitalist as far as I know. o_O

Your capitalists can still build in State Capitalism, it's just really expensive. :)
I've never actually seen them build anything under State Capitalism though. In theory they should just build four times slower than under Lassiez-Faire, but they never seem to do anything under SC.

Yes, IIRC capitalist building should be affected by the different market structures.
But if you have capitalists and industry concentrated to one or a few states, they will expand like crazy once they've built enough types of factory (enough will mostly mean nearly all of the available types). Anyone who doesn't belive that should try and play an immigrant-whore Uruguay. ;)
