Hmm, well, that's weird. Through all 48 pages of moddy stuff, there've been 6+ threads about how to put the players' families into the game and two complaining about the "of X" format for generic names, but none about the actual correct dynasties to have show up in each province from the lower nobility.

Sure, it's far too boring to go through systematically, but we ought to have a thread people can add to as they're interested. So here we are:

Please, as you find time and sources, add correct dynasties to fill the courts of the provinces or make note of inaccuracies.

edit:
For ID numbers, how about 2 + PROVINCE ID + 2 digits? So Roman dynasties would be 2 + 333 + ii = 233300, 233301, 233302, 233303, &c.

C033: the Faroes

[via this thread]:

Currently, only the one:

Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 100033 }
	name = "of Faereyar"
	province = { 33 }

I'm not sure where this came from. If we're using generic English "of" so it works for anyone from the island, it should simply be "of the Faroes." If we're going with Old Norse, it should be "af Faereyju" or period "af Færeyiu." Even if we're using modern Faroese, it's "Føroyar."

I kind of like just having the one dynasty (every single courtier who shows up is useful :D, and it's befitting for the insularity of the place.)

But if we were going to have more, some thoughts:

In his excellent AAR, Veld used the island names and Torshavn (ON. Þórshafn), the current capital. The traditional divisions for the islands are the six wards Norðeyiar (=Norðoyar/North Islands), Austrey (=Eysturoy/East Island), Straumey (=Streymoy/Current Island), Vágr (=Vágar/Bay), Sandey (=Sandoy/Sand Island) and Suðrey (=Suðuroy/South Island).

But Torshavn was uninhabited and had an awful harbor, and while the Faroese were out of the way and much less interested in sagatelling than the Icelanders, there is their saga and Sverrir's that have some families on the islands.

The biggest and most important were the Gatebeards ("Gøtuskegg") who lived at Gøta ("í Gøtu") on Austrey. Sigmundr Brestisson left children ("Sigmundsson" or "Brestisson"), as did Leifr Øssursson ("Leifsson" or "Øssursson").

Less importantly, Sverrir's "step"-father was Unas "Kambari," who had other sons. Men settled from the British Isles were called Vestmadr. Kirkjubøur was the seat of the bishop after being granted by a rich heiress. There were farms or settlements at Bøur, Hvalvík, Vestmannahøfn, Sunnbøur.

So, default:
Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 100033 }
	name = "[color=yellow]of the Faroes[/color]"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203300 }
	name = "í Gøtu"
	province = { 33 }

And alternates for those who want them:
Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203301 }
	name = "Sigmundsson"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203302 }
	name = "Leifsson"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203303 }
	name = "af Nordeyiu" #the game can't read ð
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203304 }
	name = "af Austrey"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203305 }
	name = "af Straumey"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203306 }
	name = "af Vági"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203307 }
	name = "af Sandey"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203308 }
	name = "af Sudrey"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203309 }
	name = "Unásson"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203310 }
	name = "í Kirkiubø"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203311 }
	name = "í Bø"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203312 }
	name = "í Vestmannahøfn"
	province = { 33 }

dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203313 }
	name = "í Sunnbø"
	province = { 33 }

C034: the Shetlands

[via this thread:]
[and Veld above :D]

Currently only:
Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 100034 }
	name = "of Shetland"
	province = { 34 }
}

Which is apparently ok. I'd want to say "of the Shetlands," but the Brits seem to call them Shetland unabashedly (wiki & gov't pages) as if they were a single mainland location and even say "Shetland islands" neat instead of "the Shetland islands." The Orcs get positivily sniffy about the subject.

Old Norse would be af Hjaltlandi for "Mainland." The other main island appears to be Papey Stóra (Papa Stour).

The first place the Vikings landed was supposedly at Haraldsvík (Haroldswick). Scalloway used to be Skalavagr. Other Norse island names include Valey (Vaila), Húsey (Housay), Breiðey (Bressay), Hvalsey (Whalsay), Fugley (Foula), Frióey or Friðarey (Fair Isles), Barrey (the Burras), Rauðey Mikla (Muckle Roe), Brurey (Bruray), Þrondarey (Trondra), Føtilør or Fetaland (Fetlar). Unst and Yell Havard and panbob think are pre-Norse Pictish, but the part of Wiki we didn't write sez the Norse was Iala and the Orkney Saga has Yell Sound as "Ala" Sound. Shetlopedia doesn't say anything one way or the other.

Wiki also lists a Norse Ciske family on the islands, but not much more background and all the Shetland history at Google Books are inaccessible.

So, default:
Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 100034 }
	name = "of Shetland"
	province = { 34 }
}

With optional af Hjaltlandi and:
Code:
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203417 }
	name = "Ciske"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {

	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203408 }
	name = "af Hvalsey"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203409 }
	name = "af Fugley"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203410 }
	name = "af Frióey"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203411 }
	name = "af Barrey"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203412 }
	name = "af Brurey"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203413 }
	name = "af Raudey Miklu"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203414 }
	name = "af Þrondarey"
	province = { 34 }

	name = "af Fetalandi"
	province = { 34 }
}
dynasty = {
	id = { type = 12 id = 203416 }
	name = "af Unst"
	province = { 34 }
}

Edit: Heh. Emu'd. :D
Edit: Edited dynasty # to allow for Veld's above, although there're duplicates.

Ok, first, it's the Sudan (Arabic: al-Sudani for guys and al-Sudaniyyah for girls, Greek: tou Soudan), not Sudan neat, until the 20th century. Second, that's just the Arab name for the entire region of black Africa; the Arab name for this part of it was al-Maris (al-Marisi, al-Marisiyyah). Third, what's listed as "Sudan" on the game map is actually Nubia (= land of the Noba: Noubadia, Nobadia, Nobatia, Nopadia, Nopa; Old Nubian: Midi?), the stretch of the Nile from the first to the third cataract.

The kingdom's run by the Makourians (their spelling Makouria; = Makuria, Maracu, Mukurra, al-Muqurra, Makorrah, Maqorra, &c. &c. &c.) who were a separate tribe on the Dongola Reach between the third and fifth cataracts, but Noubadia was run along pretty different lines: there was a separate, powerful eparch (Gr: eparkhos Nobadias or tes ton Nobadon khoras; ON: Migin sonoj?); there was open trade with the north and Egyptian coins, where below the third cataract strangers needed royal approval and trade was by barter only.

It's cool to leave the kingdom as Nubia (more famous, more appropriate for n00bs): as for the dynasty, no one knows if the eparch was Makourian or local or some mix. Luckily, that's no biggie since we're going with the kings at Dongola anyway.

Now, traditionally, Makourian, Noubadian, and Bejawi dynasties were reckoned somewhat matrilinearly (the king's sister's sons, if there are any, were supposed to inherit before his own sons; it's how the banu Kanz eventually inherited the region). Assuming they frowned on incest, most likely there were several dynasties who were supposed to rotate on the throne. Aloudia is reported as moving in and out of Dongola's control: briefly, in the late 10th century, it's reported as having taken over itself, perhaps both ways by inheritance. Given that the Makourian king was considered holy, able to function as a priest, hid the fact he needed food, &c., it seems possible the new leadership descended from or had married into the old dynasties and claimed to be a continuation of Meroë (Alarides) and/or Axum (Axoumites or Solomonides). It was around this period that the Mosaic-claiming Zagwe were overthrown in Ethiopia, with the usurpers claiming both that they represented the old line from Axum and that the Axum kings were descended from Solomon's kid with the queen of Sheba.

Horse-sheba.jpg

Which is definitely fun to play with: but unless JSTOR has something I can't read, the Makourian kings only seem to have used their regnal names and Greek titles when they wrote, without mentioning their lineage further back than one or two fathers. This site says Silko, basiliskos Noubadon & olon toun Aithiopon, claimed his descent from a son of Manitrarize (Maleqorobar?), a Kushite king of Meroë, but then goes on to list the kings from Makouria as his descendants (after saying the Makourians were a separate line from Teqerideamani II) in solely patrilinear fashion amid a genealogy originating from Moses, so I'm thinking it's not the most reliable source. :p

The guy who's in charge in 1066 is Georgios III, who was part of Makouria's one patrilinear dynasty: the father of that line was Ioannes. Now, maybe the family itself reckoned their importance from some more important, more ancient, more Kushite ancestor, but barring more information I think we should go with what we've got: call them Ioannides.

[Not that it helps for 1187: Georgios's son Solomon reinstated the old system.

Abu Salih wrote c. 12th c. that the kings were called the Kabil. It's not the Nubian word for king, which was ourou, but not sure if that's accurate (it's the Quranic name of Cain), a rank, or grammatically appropriate to treat it as a dynastic name: George King and King George having rather different meanings. :)]

Anyhow, since the king should have a fairly large and status-seeking family (we just don't know who they were to include them,) I'd say the dynastic name should spawn courtiers in Nubia rather than being closed.

Supposedly there were 13 separate courts each under their own priest-king eparchs/sonoj. They might've been the royal dynasties or the old "phylarchs" (tribal/clan leaders) or included Aloudia (= Alodia, Alouia, Alwah; Arabic: Anj, `Anaj, `Alwa, Alawa, `Ulwah) to the south during its periods of union. We know there was one at Tafa (Gr: Thapis; Ar: Taifa), another at Daw (= Dau; Ar: Jebel Adda), another for "the Gadera" (= Gamela, the plain of the Dongola reach), another for Makouria apart from the king. In the 9th c., there's an epitaph for a "tetrarch of Makouria," which might come from analogy with the NT Greek for the Herodian client kings or might point to reörganization. The one at Pakhoras (ON: Para; Coptic: Bakhoras; Ar: Faras) was apparently the most important: he was often the domestikos of Pakhoras (ON: Paran sanset), got royal treatment in the murals of the Nubian archbishop's cathedral, and had the title "eparch of Noubadia." The Arabs called him "Lord of the Mountain," which might be a translation of another title or just reflect that he was in charge of the northern defenses.

["Kouda" shows up at the end of a lot of the eparchs' names, but it was just a particle, probably "servant of."]

After Makouria fell, there was a kingdom of Dotawo at Daw (C793) which lastied into the 15th century. It might've been one of those supposed kinglets gone independent or might've just been a Christian remnant of the old dynasty. On the other hand, Dotawo doesn't seem to have been around at the same time as Makouria, so unless we add in some Nubians in 1337 who would use a non-spawning "of Dotawo" dynasty name, we don't need it and "of Daw" both.

The seven sees of the kingdom were Phrim (Gr: Primis; Ar: Ibrim), Pakhoras, Talmis (= Termus, Darmus), Zaë (= Saï), Dongola (= Donkalah, Dunqulah, Dumkulah; the Arabic locative is Dongolawi), and Kourte (= Korta, Korti; Ar: Qurta) in 793, plus Suenkur (= Sciencur; Ar: Shanqir) between the fourth and fifth cataracts on the border with 792. The major Nubian forts were at Pakhoras, Phrim, and Daw. Serrah (= Serrah Matto, East Serrah) was at least a small community, as was Dour (= Dirr.) Abu Salih's itenerary also lists an "Upper Maks."

Deraheib was a gold rush town on the Wadi Allaqi, where the banu Kanz had already arrived and should be popping up north and south. It's a little awkward since the ones who spawn in Nubia will initially be Christians, but they're descended from a guy whose reaction to Muhammad was "there seems to be a lot of money in this prophet business" and they did historically ingratiate themselves with the Nubian elite and inherit it, so it's not too hard to see a few 'converting' for position or marriage.

Because many Nubian placenames haven't been linked to their actual, exact locations, Nubian researchers ("Nubiologists" being too amusing to use :)) frequently use modern Sudanese Arabic names rather than period ones. That's were all the inappropriate Arabic seeped into the list here. Also, several of them are important archaeological sites, but were only monasteries and presumably not producing many children or dynasties. That includes Wizz (= Qasr el-Wizz), Debba (= Daira, Derra), Ghazali (named after a guy who wasn't even a teenager in 1066).

Sinkat and Tawkar are Sudanese cities that didn't exist or weren't mentioned at this time; Hayya is a Sudanese rail depot that didn't exist. Khor Nubt is silly ancient Egyptian (not even Coptic) and should be removed.

The Blemmyes ("of the Blemmyes") were from here and still around: hugely so. They actually controlled C792 from the Nile to the sea, including the port cities. But by this point they should be "of the Beja" (Ar: Bejawi), if we didn't want to use their proper tribes.

I like the idea of a few southern aristocracy making an appearance at court: Alodia probably had marriage ties with the Nubian dynasty in any case. So Aloudia for the country, Alwa for the old capital, Soba (= Souiah, Swiah, Suba) for the new one. Al-Harrani gave the capital as Waylula c. 1295; al-Dimashqi (d. 1327) gave it as Kusa. There's a record from Greek sources of bishops at "Arodias" (= Alodia? = Alwa? Soba?), "Borra," "Gagara," "Martin," "Banazi," and "Menkesa," but I couldn't find anything on Alodian cities to compare the names to anything accurate.

Right now, there's an "of Hagre:" I suppose that's supposed to be someplace in Ethiopia after the fall of Axum, but it seems much more straightforward to just say "Zagwe," "of Ethiopia" (= Aithiopias), "of Axum" (= Axoum), "of the Tigray." Axum had its bishops at "Soper," "Coucharim," "Takchi," "Amankul," but again I couldn't find anything on its medieval church to check that with.

Malakal is a modern city in southern Sudan - probably just better off leaving "of the Sudan."

The Garamantes ("of the Garamantes") were apparently the Tibu who moved southwest into Libya and Chad. The nominally Christian nomads to the west of the Nile were called the Ahadi. In Chad (= Kanem), there's also the So (= Sao) and Beri (=Zaghawa) peoples. Around 1080 was when the old Duguwa dynasty was replaced by the Muslim Sayfawas. Between, there's the Fur (= Foora) in Dar Fur (= "Furland"); but, on the other hand, strong cultural links between Nubia and Darfur seem to have been exaggerated.

So the default should be:

And fantasy:

(The Nubians used a complete mess of languages: clergy were Alexandrian Copts, gradually the local Old Nubian started showing up. The Greek forms are mostly by analogy: please do correct any mistakes. The Old Nubian forms are somewhat incorrect since they should be showing up before the name they modify.)

[Sources give Phrim as ON, but it looks like that was the Meroitic name: at least, all the inscriptions I've seen give Para instead. Still, a desert dynasty named Phrimin is much funnier than one called Paran.

It was a pain finding a version of Dongola: it apparently doesn't show up in a single inscription available at Google Books or on the net, & I can't find an accessible version of an ON dictionary. German wiki has Tungul, but that's certainly at least partially wrong: it would've been delta, not tau, and /u/ gets written ou in ON. But there are different ways to write the -ng-, &c. Maybe the Nubian Greek was Doggola, but Modern Greek is so weird they write it Ntongkola.]

edit: Hmm... looks like the original Kushite dynasty were the Alarids (Alarides), but looks like ibn-Tulun was told by a Copt that the Nobadian and Makourian royalty both claimed Himyarite descent (Χιμιαρίδες, Khimiarides, or al-Himyari) as early as the 870s: not from intermarriage but from the founders of their dynasties, "Selha" and "Makouri." (Selhides? Makourides?) Wonder if there's anything else to back that up.

Also fun: documented Chinese tourists during the 8th c. (if not to Makouria itself, then at least to the Red Sea coast.)

Well researched indeed! I salute you for your linguistic integrity. I haven't really got anything to contribute at the moment, but this looks great. It's a section that really needs some improve to please us history-nuts. :p

Good thread :) ...I made a load of dynasty name additions for DVIP some (many) months ago, though only a few made it in.

I haven't any exact sources for them, except scouring through various websites, wikipedia etc.

But I'll post the dynasty names when I find them. They are mainly for Central Europe, Balkans, Byzantium, Denmark and Finland.

I was going to do all the ones where there were too many 'of X' dynasties. But sometimes it is damn hard to find sources in english on local area nobility 1000 years ago ;)

These are the dynasties I have managed to scrounge up on the internet. Most of them from wikipedia or various sites on nobility. I no longer have links to all the sources, but maybe I can find some of them again if anyone is interested.
