Thanks for the map! In case anyone else here is interested, I went ahead and creates a georeferenced TIFF files out of this map. It isn't perfect yet, but at least most coasts and islands are where they are supposed to be. The corresponding "points" file for GDAL is also available.
You could load it in QGIS, GRASS, ArcGIS or similar and re-project it into whatever else you'd like for reference.
QGIS with the Georeference plug-in (it's in the default package), Natural Earth maps for reference, and a few hours tracing coastlines, seas, rivers and major mountain chains.
Georeferenced with the "Thin Plate Carree" method.
