Since Jamie550 has published his MapEditor, that allows us, in between, to change province names written across them, I would like to ask you to post here all province names in Europe (including Turkey, and USSR) that are written incorrectly, so that we could fix them. That includes missing accents, or missing letter parts (like Polish letter L with a diagonal line), or names written in English that need to be converted to native forms, like:

Warsaw -> Warszawa
Vienna -> Wien
Belgrade -> Beograd
Prague -> Praha
Moscow -> Moskva
etc.

Or some total name changes, that make map more geographically and historically accurate, like changing Constanta to Dobrich, and Tulcea to Constanta, etc.

God forbid, we do not want all native names. Much more consistent and much more memorably.

A wrong name is Wilhelmshafen. Should be Wilhelmshaven.

Thanks for the name correction. When I say more native, I do ont mean that names in USSR, Bulgaria, and Serbian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, and Bosnian parts of Yugoslavia should be written in Cyrillic letters, nor Greece and Cyprus in Greek alphabet, just better transcriptions. For example:

Athens -> in Greek Αθηνα -> transcription Athina
Belgrade -> in Serbian Београд -> transcription Beograd
etc.

if there is something to change, it must be czechoslovakian province Tabor. Tabot is small and utterly unimportant town (it was never important since hussite wars ended) and most likely doesn't even lie directly in that province, but somewhere on the border, so renaming it to Budejovice or maybe german alternative Budweis, would be great

All right, thanks. But is it Budejovice or Budĕjovice? As I said, all accent corrections are appreciated.

Why? All English (or whatever localization you're playing) is a lot more consistent than referring to everything in native names. It's also more aesthetically pleasing, IMHO, and besides, if we rename Moscw to Moskva then why not rename the Soviet Union to Sovietski Soyuz?

Frankly, I think endless nativization is simply annoying, having played Vicky and such titles where it is implemented.

it is Budějovice, or even to be 100% accurate it is České Budějovice, but these signs wouldn't be much appretiated by western language speakers, so i wouldn't go this way. and the "České" part is not necessary at all. i mean it only means czech and is added because there is very small town in Moravia, with the same name (Moravské Budějovice to be precise).

To L'Afrique: We are not to discuss rightness of province name transcription, only correct transcriptions. These changes are for optional use. You will still keep your map with Moscow, Warsaw, Venice, Rome, Vienna...

Munich should be München
Cologne should be Köln
Nuremberg should be Nürnberg

The problem with localization is that WW2 was a propaganda war for Germany, so one could argue all provinces in the Greater German Reich should get their German names... Like Warszawa -> Warschau, Krakow -> Krakau, Poznan -> Posen, Bydgosz (sp?) -> Bromberg and so on... But then, some people come complaining about that and want Polish names up to Wrozlaw for Breslau... :wacko:

it is just that i belive it is kind of practical having all names in english transcription. i just argue the logic of choosing some names over other ones. like here. crusader kings are even worse, while victoria is correct. that is a bit strange

Thank you for new series of name corrections.

For now post correct names, and later we will pick between Polish and German versions.

To telesien: We are not constructive. Are you going to post me correctly spelled names, or not? Thank you.

Simple proposal for choosing which national version of a province name to use: use the one for the nation which historically possessed that province on Jan 1, 1936. Prior to that date we are dealing with history; after that date we are dealing with a game designed to let us change history.

In the interest of not having this thread devolve into a flamewar, I'm going to have to request that "nativisation" only take place on the grounds of either:

1) the current name missing an accent here or there.
or
2) one, uniformly applied objective HOI2-based criterion (such as the owning country at 1936 start), this criterion may be selected by the OP should he wish to.

I do not want to see any arguments about f.e. Warszawa <-> Warschau

But then, Danzig would be Gdansk, Memel would be Klaipeda and several Sudetenland provinces would have Czech names, although they were largely populated by Germans and thus usually referred to by their German names... This is arguable, of course...

To telesien: We are not constructive. Are you going to post me correctly spelled names, or not? Thank you.
i'm sorry i was just getting philosophical. so the corrected names for Czechoslovakia should look like this
Prague=Praha
Pilsen=Plzeň (but for internetional version is Pilsen good)
Strakonice=Strakonice, but maybe Domažlice would be more accurate
Ústí=Ústí but "...nad Labem" can be added
Kutna Hora=Pardubice (Kutná Hora rapidly lost importance when silver deposites ran out)
Tabor=(České) Budějovice
Zilina=Žilina
Kosice=Košice
Presov=Užhorod (Prešov was always part of Slovakia and loosing it after war is just silly)
the rest is correct

For Türkiye:

Istanbul: İstanbul
Izmit: İzmit
Bursa: Çanakkale
Izmir: İzmir
Gaziantep: Adana (The province includes both cities, but Adana is much bigger than Gaziantep. The province can be called "Çukurova" too in my opinion, because that is the name of the region)
Karabük: Kastamonu (Karabük is really a very small city. There should be called Kastamonu)
Trebizond: Trabzon (at least for the last 500 years)
Batman: Mardin (geographically more correct)
Elazig: Elazığ

But then, Danzig would be Gdansk, Memel would be Klaipeda and several Sudetenland provinces would have Czech names, although they were largely populated by Germans and thus usually referred to by their German names... This is arguable, of course...

That would be strange. Maybe the criteria could be the country that owned the province at the beginning (or end) of 1939, except Czech provinces and undisputably Polish provinces.

Although, that would make problems for Albania and Japanese-held Chinese provinces, among others...

Coming up with standard criteria is going to be difficult. Otherwise, I think it's a great project, so good luck!
