Is there a better way to edit the province.scv file, I have been changing it in EU2 and HOI through time consuming method using notpad, I do know that excel opens the csv files but they are still in the same jumble, is there anyway to have wordpad of excel organise the province.csv file so that each set of information eg: manpower and IC, are put into their own collum?r alternatively, has anoyone or will anyone create a program for editing the province.scv file?

Cheers, Bart

Make a copy of province.csv (excel can destroy the data)
---
To split the columns
Open the file in excel
Choose Text to columns in Data
Choose delimited, next
Tick the semi colon box, next, finished

I suggest that you check the columns after you have split them with the filter function. Excel can spoil the columns, if they have 8-bit characters like accents. The workaround is to paste in the text into excel and then split columns
---
To organise without changing order:
Choose Data->Filter->Autofilter
Click on the pulldown boxes
--
To sort:
Choose Data->Sort
Choose "has header" radio button
To get back the "right" order again you need to sort by the gf (or whatever it is called) column please note that the sort on the tool bar may screw up the columns so don't use it.

And then to save your changes:

1) Choose File|Save As
2) In the Save as type dropdown, choose CSV (comma delimited) (*.csv).
3) After this, go into notepad/wordpad and change all "," to ";".

An important note, Excel will now be in "csv" mode. It is best to get out of Excel without any further saving, then reopen if you want to make more changes.

The thing i do is use word as a go-between. It makes for a lengthier process, but if you do it right nothing gets messed up.

open the csv in word

use replace all, select ;(semicolon) replace with ^t
(this puts tabs in all the columns, takes time depending on your pc)
Ctrl A
Crtl C

open excel
Ctrl V

then reverse to put back. I got into this awhile ago 'cause, as aetius noted, excel sometimes damages things. Also the find/replace in excel isn't as good as the one in word(IMO)...

Having a multilanguage pack installed is a recipe for disaster, my excel always assumes that two 8-bit characters is a single 7-bit doublebyte character, which means cut off lines and other unpleasantness.

Isn't there an option where you state that you use double-character language encoding? Use Unicode or sommink...

Perhaps... But it is only when you paste from websites usually, it gives the options of Text, Html and Utf-8 or like. Opening a csv-file with excel defaults to shift-JIS or like in a Japanese environment.

Thanks for all you help guys!, one other question, I am not an excel man so I am not sure how i can make all numbers in a given row equal the same number, ie: i want all province ic to =1. How do i do this? Also how can I get all the ocean provinces at the bottom so that I can more easily not have them equaling 1ic etc..?

Cheers, Bart

Set one cell = 1. Then copy the cell. Then select all the cells you want to copy into. Then paste. They should all be = 1. But beware with cut/paste, Excel tries to be helpful and will not always do what you want...

You can get the ocean provinces together by sorting on the column headed with terrain. Before you save the file back, you need to sort on the first column and make sure the first row is the header row and the last row has an id of -1.

i use the Excel of Office XP and i never have a problem.
I already modified the manpower of more than 50 provinces and i never have a problem. :D
I also send my modified file to my friends and they use it without problems.
So i recommend the Excel. :D
