Hello everybody !

It seems that there is few reasons to stay protestant in EU1 :

1) protestants states have -3 in stability increase , reformed +5
2) protestants gain +1 colonist each year , reformed +2
3) reformed (and chiites) gain a +1 moral level in combat
4) it is stated by the game that becoming reformed "..will increase your revenues in the long term.."

I must admit that i never saw the point 4) having much effects.
In fact i wonder if becoming reformed had not reduced my annual income.

I try to play the kalmar union , it worked after fifty years of internal struggle with the swedes.
Then i discoved canada witch i started to colonize.
Scandinavia , although huge , is rather poor and i had difficulties putting colonists , so by becoming reformed i hoped to gain more money :)
But this didn't happen , i stayed about 150D per year , with more colons that i still couldn't place:(

So now :
- Do you agree with me that reformed is better than protestant ?
- Don't count on religion to give you more money :(

greetings;)

2. Don't ever count on religion for cash.... doesn't work well. You'll run out of money soon and then you can't do much more converting to get more.

I choose Reformed religion when important enemies are Reformed. I do not wish to give these enemies a moral advantage.

However, Protestantism has advantage too: higher production, more taxes. When playing a minor, it is profitable.

There is a very good religion chart at EU province

The religion chart pointed to by rex indicates that protestant tax = +20% while reformed = -30%.

where does this come into account? If these teaxes go into development, reformed sounds like disastrous in the long run.

Thanks you rex, for the very good link.

I discovered that there is a 50% difference in taxes from protestant to reformed:eek:

Maybe there is a mistake , dosen't shiites have a +1 colonist per year

Yes, reformed gets a tax decrease. however, combined with the trade and production boinuses, extra colonist, and increased morale (allows your maintenance slider to be kept lower at high levels or morale) you will make more money in the long run. Your taxes will go down, but your coloniation, army, and economy are markedly superior to other religions. Reformed is, IMHO, the gold standard of religions and I convert to it (if possible...no Muslims here) no matter who I play.

Does turning protestant (and, perhaps later on, also reformed) when playing a country which is traditionally catholic always trigger a civil war? I had that occur to me three times in a row when playing as France, and even if it was - eventually - no big deal to reconquer all the rebelling provinces, it was a pain in the ass (which prompted me to replay the conversion two times).

Also: if there is always a civil war following unhistorical convertion, what controls the time which elapses between the convertion and the civil war? The first time, it happened immediately, the second time it took half a year, and the third time it took well over ten years. Is it in some way dependant on how many protestant provinces you have, as opposed to how many catholic ones you have (of all my... well, maybe 90 provinces, only Thuringen, Wurtemberg, and the two Palatinate provinces were protestant at the time).

I am planning to go reformed pretty soon, but if there has to be a civil war again, I may be less inclined to do so. I am in a period of great exploration and colonization, and cannot be bothered to get a civil war on my hands just because I want to get more colonizers.

It doesn't always trigger a civil war... Although it does make your population in Catholic provinces particularly unhappy, so as France or Spain it's certainly possible that civil wars are more common.

I don't think so... I mean, look at Languish's France AAR, no civil war there (or did I miss something ;) )

There usually is one when I play, but I've already had that one before I converted to Protestant. That makes two civil wars. There are usually less. If I convert again, there will probably be another one, which is all too tedious at this stage (especially since the fortifications are starting to get well nigh impregnable).

Also the Reformed gives a bonus to your merchants, as a result your "reformed" merchants more easily compete out other merchants, while other countries will not succed easily in competing them.

But again, what is the point of turning Reformed if you do not have provinces with that religion, and in addition as a result of an "convert" event you might end up with a couple of Reformed provinces that in the end will require to set a modest tolerance for them as well.

In France there is civil war in every game, or not ??

Not necessarily, but there is the potential for one. IIRC, France has a sort of 'time of troubles', basicly multiple waves of obscuritism, which virtualy always results in serious revolts, which if left unchecked, can lead to civil war.
I've never had a civil war playing as any country, let alone France, but i have seen the French AI succumb to a few over the course of many games.
