I'm playing as the Commonwealth. It's 1562. Blobhemia (which ate Saxony) leads the Protestant League, and myself and the Ottomans are both members. Austria is small and weak; there was no Burgundian inheritance, and Hungary is in a PU under Muscovy (who is part of neither league, but allied to Austria).

But even though our side should have a significant advantage, AI Bohemia won't attack. Right now especially, Austria is at war with France and wouldn't be able to join the league war. Why don't they? What on Earth is the logic here?

Fucking hell. So Bohemia's king died and that made me leader of the league. However, by that time, France and Austria were no longer at war, and Muscovy and a huge Aragon had both joined the Catholic side. I mean I won handily, but I'm still pretty mad about it.

If you have saves where the AI should do something but doesn't, feel free to upload. The thing about leagues is that it's a very specific mechanic occurring for a single occasion a long time into the game, so it almost never gets tested in practice. If it goes out of tune without our players telling us and providing examples we won't know about it.

I have experienced league wars declared in the past 3 games i've had, 2 of which were won by the protestants, 1 was inconclusive, and possibly only because it was against me.
I think the issue is the AI doesn't like to declare wars it doesn't have a significant advantage in, so the leage war might not get declared unless it's almost certain to be won.

Although i don't think the lack of a league war should lead to Catholic dominance though, having a secondary system for that case would seem better.

IMO, League Wars should be possible to initiate as the Emperor - the real history ones happened because the Emperor was being a dick to the Protestants, no?

I hope this is tracked down. I was Protestant League leader playing just yesterday, and the moment I opened the screen to declare war on Austria, my (admittedly very old) ruler died and my (4 year old) female heir went into regency. League leadership transferred to some other country and the current leader is NOT declaring war, even though Austria has been beat down in war after war and would almost certainly lose.

I went back to the save and there was a truce. So the league war started in my game a little later, but it did start. The Protestant league won and Austria is on the ropes. I am happy now. I hope the first poster gets his problem tracked down too.

older posting - That's a good idea. I'll do that when I get back to the game sometime this weekend. (Friday is date night, so no playing after work tonight.)

I even started conquering the smaller members of the Catholic League hoping that would encourage the Protestant leader (Bohemia).

Hopefully my case is as simple as the league leaders having a truce or something. Central Europe exploded after Austria tried to take land from one of my allies (Holland or Cologne, can't remember which now) and we ground the Emperor's armies down to a white peace. Suddenly conquest wars popped up all over the HRE and half of them are still going on.

My biggest problems with the League wars is when the Protestants win and I look over 100 years later and the HRE is nearly 80% Catholic or when the Catholics win and somehow continue to maintain their dominance despite the HRE being 95% Protestant.

I still can't stand when catholic countries join the protestant side and countries like the Ottomans join sides. Seems like muslim countries should stay out of it, and catholics should stay on the catholic side. I hate when I have to fight a massive Ottoman army to enforce Catholicism, etc.

What I dislike is when a side actually wins. Reformed nations should have the possibility to lead the empire. I always aim for the balanced war, turning into a white peace.

So if Spain is your main rival as the Ottomans, and Spain joined the catholic side, why should the Ottomans not join the protestant side then? Weakening your rivals is a good thing, the cause is second to that (most of the times), it has been so throughout history.

Historically, catholic France joined the 30 years war in the protestant side, so I can't really be mad that they do in this game. The Ottomans were sworn ennemies of Austria (or rather the HRE), so it also makes a lot of sense for them to try to weaken them.

Yeah but to me it defeats the entire point of a religious league war. The ottomans are not part of the empire or either religion so their involvement ruins the entire "religious" nature of the war for me. It so often becomes the war of the Catholics vs the Protestants, with Catholic Spain, fighting Catholic France and Muslim Ottomans or some such. That may as well just be another regular war then.

So blame history, as Ottoman were on the side of the Protestants keeping the common wealth from attacking.

What I'm upset is about that you can't join the war mid strode like it happened in real life. As well as the Catholics were supposed to have been the ones who started it.

Your mistake is thinking the "religious" nature of the war is the most important aspect of it. It isn't. It is important for the countries within the empire, sure, but, for the rest, it is mostly just an opportunity to hurts their enemies.

Ottos need not be in the league to declare war against their enemies.

Edit: ...like it happened in real life.
