I can see the point of Protectorates as most of the European nations. When you get to India or China it doesn't do you a whole lot of good to annex people there as they don't really give you anything. The free Protectorates are semi useful.

When playing as the native americansor someone like the timurids the protectorate system is terrible. you go from being able to take huge swathes of the country to getting absolutely nothing. I've had a massive rivalry going on with the Ottomans who have eaten all the mamluks, most of the middle east and large chunks elsewhere.

Despite being the largest nation in the game I am having serious problems with them even westernized as so many huge areas of my land are now useless to me. Whereas before Vijayanagar, massive jaunpur and Bengal would have contributed 40-50k troops now they do nothing but give me trade power. They will never do anything but give me trade power. I can see how it's useful for them but it basically means I have no incentive to expand anywhere except to the west.

Are they supposed to try to westernize at some point and then I can kill them and vassalize them?

Right now my only option is to kill them 2-3 province at a time and never have any admin power ever again. If that's the way Paradox wants the game to be played then there is no point playing anyone who doesn't have massive coring cost discounts.
