This makes no sense, and help and a search aren't helpful.
I've got four u.s. fleets in a sector, 3 cv fleets (4 cv, 8 dd), and one assault ship fleet with only assault ships in it. They're invading a pacific island with japanese marines on it, and some japanese fleets appearing every once in a while.
The problem is, the transport fleet is often targeted alone. Even if the japanese got extra lucky, halsey would only take one fleet off doing irrelevant things. The transport fleet should only be engaged when all other fleets have been sunk. Iirc, that's how it worked in HoI 2.
So how do you protect a transport fleet, especially while invading an island?
i understand ur point of view but i still think its quite logic ur transports/assault ships are striked first if ennemy succeed:
in this case (interception/counter-attack against an ennemy invasion from AI point of view), ur transport fleet is highly primary target for them, even if they are striked by defense forces u have around to escort ur transports and troops inside, etc... its normal they aim ur transports first
so, not such unlogic ur transports stay in risky/trouble situation if intercepted by sea during the landing operation and even with credible protection from rest of ur forces around...
but u can act to efficiantly defend them !
for me, there are 3 steps to proceed, i always do like this:
- my transport/landing ships making the invasion are always in separed fleets to foccus only on landing (and let my warships around mobility they need).
- i send escort fleets protecting the invasion in naval provinces NEXT of the main naval province where my transport fleet acting (and closing all naval access, of course, each naval provinces touching main one have my warship(s) fleet(s) to patrol in)
- i cover air space upon my main naval province (where my transport fleet do the landing operation) with always FREE (!!! = UNACTING till threat confirmed) Nav Bombers ready to intercept ennemy fleet if they engaging my transport/assault ships, more quickly as possible...
after, use of my air cover forces (NAVs) to protect them depend of the context:
if the ennemy navy threat is strong and real, i dont intercept them in previous naval provinces coz they will join my transport fleet whatever i intercept them quickly or not.
so, i try to make max damages i can with my own escort fleets in previous naval provinces first...
and soon as/if i have confirmation they reached central province --or already engaged my transport fleet there (doing the landing at that time)--, i launch my B Nav forces to strike them upon main naval province...
the purpose isnt really destroy warships attacking my transports (better if they do either, of course).
but more to disorganize completly their green bars (org value of all units) with...
coz they can completly disorganize ennemy ships green bars in just few hours, etc... u see ?
and then, whatever ur transport fleets are already engaged by them: with 0to5% organization points (for all ennemy warships concerned), their chances to continue to sink ur transport or assault ships are close of zero...
then, u will can end ur invasion.
(even if it can take quite more time than without ennemy fleets around, of course)
i think its the best way to do.
but its a question of good timing too, sometimes its not enough and u still can loose 1or2 landingships in the adventure or simply must leave and restart later, of course...
risky/important invasions can need more of one try to success.
(and u must also be ready to resign quickly if u see u will can not protect ur transport fleet from ennemy ships incoming, etc... better to act preventivly then)
...in fact, there is no "miracle solution" to escape any losses in naval invasions.
but its logic and realist, its a part of the game, i fully agree with these rules...
and that also means u need to fix considerable naval and air forces of ur own to protect ur landing fleet during all that period (and only for that till troops have landed), etc...
so, be sure u have enough naval & air forces to assure "naval safe place" around before launch the landing step with ur transportfleet...
