Following the Change metro station mechanic thread, here is a proposal for a system I believe would be more convenient to build metro. The whole idea is to be able to build our metro network with a lot more freedom: changing station depth, rotating the station from the entrance, being able to build proper transfer stations and hubs.

The idea initially came in watching the water network, which is very intuitive. Water facilities have "connectors", thanks to which we can plug them to the water network.

aquaconnect.jpg

Here, in addition to the "metro kit" having both an entrance and a station (as it exists currently), I would propose as an extra choice to the player to get an independent entrance and an independent station. Those wouldn't work on their own: they would require to be connected exactly the way it works for the water network. Sorry for my poor 3D design skills but here's a scheme I've created to illustrate the idea.

connecteur2.jpg

We could directly connect an entrance to a station, in simply pluging it in.

connexion-ok.jpg

And this direct connection could be done at a free angle.

connexion2.jpg

connexion3.jpg

In addition to that, we would also have a "pedestrian corridor" tool (or underground pathway) which would work like water pipes, in order to connect a station to a distant entrance.

construction1.jpg

construction2.jpg

This could allow us, for instance, to connect deep tube stations similar to the most famous lines of the London underground. If there's a depth gap between both connectors, the corridor would go down and generate automatically stairs like in the scheme below.

construction3.jpg

And of course, corridors could be connected one to another, allowing this way multiple entrances to serve a station, or even multiple stations served as a single hub. The player could go as wild as he wants! Here's an example just for fun. :)

transfer.jpg

With such a "plug-it in" system, we could imagine some buildings having pre-built direct metro entrances, like for instance railroad stations, airport terminals, or malls. In order to serve them, we would only need to connect them to a station or to a corridor. We could make terrific things with such a tool!!! That would be sooo coool.

This is probably an ambitious change, but I would gladly pay the price for it as a part of an advanced transit DLC.

Glad to see so much support for the idea. :)

About the last point about buildings such as railroad stations or airport terminals with direct connectors, here's an attempt to illustrate the idea. In normal view we would have a station looking like a normal station.

train-station-connector-1.jpg

But when we would push on some kind of metro transport view, it could appear something like this:

train-station-connector-2.jpg

And this connector could of course be plugged to a metro network. Here's an idea about how that metro view may look like once the rail station plugged into a metro hub:

underground-view.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality, it could be better done of course. I'm only trying to give an idea.

Nicely done!

I'm so exited about this idea! Would make planning and building the best metro system so much more fun and dynamic... And also make it easier so replicate existing real world systems! +100

Thanks, I'm excited at the idea too, but expectations shouldn't be too high on this. Adding corridors as I'm showing would take a lot of time to be designed properly.

I don't see this coming as a regular patch, but I believe there would be the potential for this if it was included in a heavy DLC, similar to what "Rush Hour" was for SimCity4. I don't believe it would make anything more complex for the player though as he would still be able to place regular station as they exist (maybe only designed more nicely than the current shadow style). The idea is only to offer him the convenience to build separately the entrance (which is tied to road layout above ground) and the station (which is tied to tunnel layout underground). This idea in itself would be very powerful I believe and make the metro system something a lot more central in the gaming experience.

And it would be even greater if we were able to follow our Cims in the metro corridors using the First person mod. Alright I know I'm dreaming. :)

This idea is utterly fantastic. Would definitely buy a DLC that had this, but better if it was in core game. I would love to try and create something like London Euston - which has a multi-terminal train station, and also a multi-terminal subway (metro) station beneath it. There are a few key access points to the metro (the main one being within the main train station building) and then once your underground there's a network of tunnels leading to different subway platforms going in different directions and at different heights.

Would also be awesome if you could follow a cim in first person camera mode as they go in to the station, make their way to the platform, get on a train, etc... Asset creators could make custom tunnels, custom platforms, etc. You could basically extend this out in to a whole new subterranean world, with underground malls, parking (access via road tunnels), etc.

Will be interesting to see if next update has pedestrian tunnels, as those would work great for some of the ideas above - I really hope they can be customised though (or have underground buildings that can be customised, just anything so it doesn't all look the same).

I love it. This is one of those ideas that really gets me excited because I love rail systems in general. :)

The idea of a simple station is awesome because of the ability to place it anywhere instead of having the bit of tunnel attached which makes placing the metro stations awkward.

Your nice drawing helped explain your idea very well. Great job with these, don't be so hard on yourself. :D

I simply love this idea! It would add so much realism to laying out your metro network because now you can plot the most optimal route for your metro network and additionally placing the entrances exactly where they would be used most.

Also good job on your 3D presentation of the idea, it's not poor at all!

an advanced metro system should also include the possibility of metro tracks to occasionally go overground, as they do in many big european cities.

Toronto as well, both as bridges over ravines and totally above round toward the ends of the line. Above-ground is cheaper to build! And, given that Cities in Motion has metro lines that o underground, on-the-ground, and elevated, CO clearly knows about these possibilities.

Well first of all, I don't think we should need a specific connector. I'd very much like it if we could build pedestrian walkways below ground, so you could use those for both pedestrian underpasses and connecting to metro stations like this.

IF we had that, a simpler method would to just have metro stations that attack to the rail tunnel and have said stations remain entirely underground with some pedestrian walkway connectors at the edges. You can then draw the walkway up to surface level for street access and connect adjacent stations using underground walkways. no need for a special metro entrance.

On a side note, we also need to be able to build metro on the surface or as elevated rail and have stations that can connect to them.

The advanced metro system would be awesome. To have the ability to have Multilevel metro stations would be helpful. Also, I am getting tired on not being able to place an entrance where I need it. To make the game more realistic to real world, I would like to also have the ability to have multilevel metro tunnels (Upgrade existing tunnels), be able to choose which lines run on a given level, and multiple tracks on the same level. This would also express trains to pass as other trains are stopped at the station.

What a fantastic idea. The only problem would be how much would this add to the spec of the game? Who would be able to run it? Would it put too much pressure on most PCs? You've certainly put a lot of time and effort not to mention creativity to producing your proposal. It certainly would be fantastic if trying to recreate a city subway infrastructure like London's. Skye Storme's current London build series would blow our minds even more.

That's a good point as the calculations will still be needed for traffic and destinations. The good news is there will be no need to render anything on the screen.
