Following the Change metro station mechanic thread, here is a proposal for a system I believe would be more convenient to build metro. The whole idea is to be able to build our metro network with a lot more freedom: changing station depth, rotating the station from the entrance, being able to build proper transfer stations and hubs.
The idea initially came in watching the water network, which is very intuitive. Water facilities have "connectors", thanks to which we can plug them to the water network.
Here, in addition to the "metro kit" having both an entrance and a station (as it exists currently), I would propose as an extra choice to the player to get an independent entrance and an independent station. Those wouldn't work on their own: they would require to be connected exactly the way it works for the water network. Sorry for my poor 3D design skills but here's a scheme I've created to illustrate the idea.
We could directly connect an entrance to a station, in simply pluging it in.
And this direct connection could be done at a free angle.
In addition to that, we would also have a "pedestrian corridor" tool (or underground pathway) which would work like water pipes, in order to connect a station to a distant entrance.
This could allow us, for instance, to connect deep tube stations similar to the most famous lines of the London underground. If there's a depth gap between both connectors, the corridor would go down and generate automatically stairs like in the scheme below.
And of course, corridors could be connected one to another, allowing this way multiple entrances to serve a station, or even multiple stations served as a single hub. The player could go as wild as he wants! Here's an example just for fun.
With such a "plug-it in" system, we could imagine some buildings having pre-built direct metro entrances, like for instance railroad stations, airport terminals, or malls. In order to serve them, we would only need to connect them to a station or to a corridor. We could make terrific things with such a tool!!! That would be sooo coool.
This is probably an ambitious change, but I would gladly pay the price for it as a part of an advanced transit DLC.
