Aberrated Navajo
By the late 9th Century, the tribes of the south-west remained numerous and were often in conflict. Among the Hopi and Navajo peoples arose leaders who brought together different tribes under their leadership, and fought for supremecy in their region. The struggle continued for over 80 years before the Navajo and their allies dominated the Hopi and their allies. Yet while the Navajo won the military and political victory, the absorbtion of Hopi ideas and aethetics would evoke profound changes in Navajo culture, language and politics. Navajo culture became less war-like and less concerned with the outside world, as much as was known of it. Had there been historians present to adequately analyse the situation, many would have argued that, in fact, the Hopi were the victors.
The 12th and 13th centuries were the flowering of Navajo culture, which began with the invention of both writing and paper production. The development of irrigated agriculture and of animal husbandry ensured rapid population growth, with large urban areas developing along the Rio Grande. The Navajo developed pottery, mathematics, astronomy and a school was established at Naltsoos-to. By the middle of the 14th century the Navaho had codified laws, a bureaucracy and government that was in part democratic, electing a leader (the Mokia) from among the elders (25 years+) each 12 years. The Navajo traded with the Aztec and Zapotek to the south and for goods from the north and west through neighbouring tribes.
Metalworking began in the mid-1300s and grew quickly to includes iron ores. As the 15th century begins, the Navajo are still grappling with the use of metals but are on the brink of significant innovation.
