Hi,

I have prepared a lengthy text file with a proposal for Aberrating North America, Central America and the Caribbean. It's a bit more than just a proposal, as it contains lengthy event, monarch and leader lists, especially for the key countries Maya and Navajo.

I do not have authority for posting attachments, so perhaps I can supply it to one of the administrators to do this? Other ideas?

Regards,

Matty

I'd be interested in seeing at least a boiled-down summary so we have some idea what we're talking about....

Also... I would suggest not increasing (and if possible decreasing) the number of occupied coastal provinces, particularly on the eastern side, so as to allow for colonialism.

Introduction

All,

Below is the introduction from the original file, and then I'll follow that with the files for each of the Aberrated countries.

In response to Sheridan's comments, I'd be happy to see the Lenape removed and turned into 'terra nulius', but in General I feel strongly that the Europeans need more challenges to colonization, not fewer.

To MAs comments, there is no map. I'm not a modder, just a player with some ideas. You will have to imagine the map for yourself, I'm afraid.

I know there's a lot to read here, but I think you will find it worthwhile.

Proposal for Aberrated North and Central America and the Caribbean

Currently, European invasion and colonization of the New World is a relatively uneventful affair. What action there is comes from other European powers. The map is known, the riches are known, the enemy is known and it all unfolds in a more-or-less predictable manner (as well as much faster than it should). In Aberrating the New World I hope to slow down the pace of colonisation, and to enhance its variety and challenge.

The following proposal for Aberrating this part of the world is to increase the scope of action and variety in the New World. I have drafted some histories and the key events and individuals that represent this alternative history. In drafting this proposal I was guided by two main considerations. The first was to enliven the character of the pagan nations so they were less ‘cookie-cutter’ same. The second was to focus on how these cultures might respond to the Europeans and their military and cultural challenge (in ways other than conceding defeat and dying of disease).

The concept is by no means complete, despite the level of detail presented here. More could be done with the native groups on the eastern seaboard, perhaps a strengthening of Lenape, creating another sea-going culture there like the changes for the Maya.

This Aberration can be summarized as follows

1. Reflect the real impact of European diseases

I chose to do this by creating new Epochal Events, to ensure that the impact is tied to provinces, not nations. This means that disease will ravage Tenochtitlan whether or not the Aztec Empire still exists. However, each epochal event triggers a corresponding political event that is nation specific, if the nation still exists.

2. Gently Aberrate some nations

I have given the Iroquois a little more deserved military challenge, and reversed roles between the Aztec and Zapotec. Enough to make the interactions with these groups less predictable.

3. Heavily Aberrate two nations

I took the Navajo and the Maya and significantly re-wrote their history. These two are as Aberrated as it gets, and unashamedly so. The goals here are to provide greater challenge and interest to the player of European colonisers, and to create New World countries that are themselves intriguing to play. I can honestly see both of these as being worthy of multiplayer attention. Unlike the normal pagan nations, the Maya and Navajo present enough of a military challenge to the size of early exploring flotillas and armies, that players may find it more worth their while to negotiate with these groups.

In addition to whatever modifications others in the community may wish to make, there are definitely two significant tasks remaining. The first is to extend the death dates of these nations longer. Personally, I feel they need to be extended to 1820 (or beyond for compatability with Victoria). At the very least for Maya and Navajo.

The second is to solve the Mayan naval question. I am dead against Aberrating the new World such that it no longer has the whiteman drawback. This adds great character to the region. How then to permit the Maya to have and build ships? It’s one thing to begin the game with them, another to enable to construct new units. The most likely solution would be to have an event which triggers when the Maya have one or less naval unit, which then allows them to build one or two additional units. This event would need to trigger each an every time, and have a death date for whenever their normal ability to build ships commences. Sound like complicated scripting.

The events, leaders and monarch are presented in text format only for three reasons.
First, I don’t know how to write code. Second, it’s all a lot easier to read and digest in normal English. Finally, it makes more sense to code all this once the ideas have been accepted and given their inevitable mutations.

Aberrated Maya

Aberrated Mayan History

Mayan history began to diverge in the early1100s with the invention of superior ocean going vessels. By 1250, the Maya had explored most of the Caribbean and under Balam Xiu began colonizing the islands. The fertile soils and sources for sacrificial offerings (each island’s native inhabitants) ensured the Maya continued to hop from island to island. The Maya grew powerful and began a campaign to conquer the Zapotec, but met with defeat at the hands of Cuautemoc the Great. By 1419, the Zapotec had conquered most of the traditional Mayan lands and only the Yucatan region remained independent.

Mayan Events

Title: Napot Xiu Moves the capital to Otzimo
Trigger: December 18 1493
Flavour text: The ancient capital at Chichen Itza had long waned in size and influence within the kingdom, surpassed by the safety and wealth on the island of Jit Zi (modern day Cuba). With the increasing threat from Zapotec and the new travellers from across the sea, Napot Xiu formally moved his palace and administration. The event was heralded by positive omens and proceeded with great pageantry.
Effects: Captial shifts from Yucatan to Guantanamo; Centralization +1; Stability +1; -50 ducats; Offensive Doctrine –1; Land –1; Yucatan –3000 pop; Guantanamo +3000 pop.

Title Cocom Xiu confronts the Invaders
Trigger: Monarch is Cocom Xiu AND war between Maya and Eire, Brittany, Granada or Scotland (and others?).
Flavour text: Unlike his uncle Napot Xiu, Cocom Xiu was not a traditionalist, and often fought against the restrictions of the priests and the dictates of conventional culture. The commencement of hostilities with the Europeans represented a serious enough threat to enable him to enact changes in Mayan culture that would be far reaching … if only they were able to survive.
Effects: Gain 5 Warships; gain 5000 inf; wakeleader Zumot (admiral); Stability –2; treasury +100, inflation +2; quality +1; Land –1; Offensive Doctrine +2; wakeevent Cocom Xiu Triumphant!

Title: Cocom Xiu Triumphant!
Trigger: Monarch Cocom Xiu AND not war between Maya and Eire, Scotland, Brittany or Granada AND control of five core provinces.
Flavour text: Despite superior European technology, Cocom Xiu’s charismatic leadership and the tactical genius of Zumot wore down the invading fleets and armies. The Europeans proposed peace, and decided to treat the Mayans as equals (at least for now). Cocom Xiu’s victory gave him the authority to advance his desired changes to Mayan culture. It opened a period of sustained growth in learning and trade for the Maya, and access to the markets and knowledge of Europe.
Effects: Aristocracy –2; Serfdom –2; Infra +1000; Trade +1000; Naval tech +1000; techgroup becomes Chinese; Stability +3.

Title: Trade and Missionaries
Trigger: June 6, 1604
Flavour text: With trade becoming of increasing significance for the Europeans, religious leaders began to demand that the savages of the new world be exposed to religious teaching of the west, not just its economy. The colonial governor has presented you with an ultimatum. How will you respond?
Effects Option A Open the Maya to Trade and Religion: Stability –1; RR +2 for 120; Centralization –1; wakeevent Europeanisation of the Maya.
Effects Option B We Will Not Be Dictated To!: Stability +1; Centralization +2.

Title: Europeanization of the Maya
Trigger: February 12 1625, Trade And Missionaries Option A
Flavour text: The opening of Mayan society to greater trade and religious instruction has brought significant change. Which of the competing missionaries will we listen to?
Effects Option A The Sunni Imams: Stability –3; RR +3 for 60; Remove CoT from Atlixco; add CoT to Guantanamo; change religion to Sunni; conversions X 3.

Title: Revolts of the Coatlists
Trigger: Europeanization of the Maya, March 1, 1630
Flavour text: Incensed at their loss of influence, many of the pagan priests fomented rebellion against the monarch and the new religion. This culminated in a series of uprisings across the kingdom in 1630.
Effects: Revolt in 4 random provinces; RR +2 for 12.

Title: The College of Al-Badajoz
Trigger: Europeanization of the Maya Option A, September 1 1638
Flavour text: Musraf Pancho Al-Badajoz was a wealthy Granadan merchant from Badajoz whose riches had been made in the New World. Following the Coatlist revolts and for the glory of Allah, he used his gold at the end of his days for the building of a great university. It was built in Guantanamo to strengthen islam among the Maya and encourage scholars from Europe to soread the learning of the west.
Effects: Treasury –200; Infra + 1000, change techgroup to Muslim; +3 missionaries.

Title: The Madness of Xbalanque
Trigger: August 1, 1658
Flavour text: Xbalanque was insane and in his short reign plundered the Maya treasury to fund extravagant parties and bizarre festivals. He expelled foreign merchants and was on the brink of declaring war against both Brittany and Eire when he died suddenly (believed to be after drinking blood laced with poison.)

Effects: Stability –2; RR+2 for 19 mo.

Title: The Serpent Queen
Trigger: March 5, 1664
Flavour text: Emerging from the shadows of her brother’s madness and female subservience, Ix’iloom proved both cunning and charismatic. She quickly built an alliance to support her ascndency. Her clever diplomacy, fashion sense and penchant for machinations would earn her the title The Serpent Queen. She took as her consorts military leaders and it is said that she ensured that she bore only daughters, and that her daughters bore only daughters, beginning a line of female rules that would last for over a century.
Effects: RR+1 for 24.

Title: Mercantile Reforms of Ix’iloom
Trigger: January 1, 1669, CoT in Guantanamo
Flavour text: The years of Xbalanque’s madness followed a period of rapid growth in the size and dynamism of European colonial and mercantile activity in the region. Even as Ix’iloom consolidates her authority, many foreign merchants have left Guantanamo and the Maya are likely to lose their position in the trading world. Attracting merchants back to Guantanamo will require building a safer port, fighting piracy and providing attractive concessions. Other advisors urge you to instead support manufacturing of products for trade in Europe. How should the Queen respond?
Effects Option A Make Guantanamo a Merchant’s Paradise: Stability –1; Treasury –500; Trade +500; Mercantilism -3; Inflation –3; Innovative +1; Aristocracy –1; Merchants +6; Fortress in Guantanamo +1; base tax value in Guantanamo –1; gain 5 warships in Guantanamo.

Aberrated Zapotec History

The Aberrated history of the Zapotec commences in 1350. For many years the repressed vassals of the Aztecs or Maya, the Zaptotec revolted under the leadership of Cuauhtemoc and over a period of 40 years came to dominate the Aztecs, and conquered much land from the Maya. By 1419, the Zapotec are the masters of their world, but are consumed with ritual sacrifice. By the time of European exploration, the Zapotec may not possess the innovation needed to respond to their challenges.

Aberrated Iroquois History

The Aberrated history of the Iroquois is not different from that of the real Iroquois. However, their response to European involvement in North America has been considered and possible alternate paths can be chosen for them.

The Iroquois events allow for the emergence of a significant war leader in either the periods before and after Haio-hwa'tha (Hiawatha). During this period, the option exists for greater diplomatic leverage. Later, the Iroquois can decide to meet the European challenge by adapting elements of their culture.

Iroquois Set Up

Change the monarch file to include only one monarch. From my limited understanding of Iroquois history, they never really had a monarch as we would know it. No one chief. Instead, they have the Five Nation’s Council and a constitution which bound them together.

Aberrated Navajo

By the late 9th Century, the tribes of the south-west remained numerous and were often in conflict. Among the Hopi and Navajo peoples arose leaders who brought together different tribes under their leadership, and fought for supremecy in their region. The struggle continued for over 80 years before the Navajo and their allies dominated the Hopi and their allies. Yet while the Navajo won the military and political victory, the absorbtion of Hopi ideas and aethetics would evoke profound changes in Navajo culture, language and politics. Navajo culture became less war-like and less concerned with the outside world, as much as was known of it. Had there been historians present to adequately analyse the situation, many would have argued that, in fact, the Hopi were the victors.

The 12th and 13th centuries were the flowering of Navajo culture, which began with the invention of both writing and paper production. The development of irrigated agriculture and of animal husbandry ensured rapid population growth, with large urban areas developing along the Rio Grande. The Navajo developed pottery, mathematics, astronomy and a school was established at Naltsoos-to. By the middle of the 14th century the Navaho had codified laws, a bureaucracy and government that was in part democratic, electing a leader (the Mokia) from among the elders (25 years+) each 12 years. The Navajo traded with the Aztec and Zapotek to the south and for goods from the north and west through neighbouring tribes.

Metalworking began in the mid-1300s and grew quickly to includes iron ores. As the 15th century begins, the Navajo are still grappling with the use of metals but are on the brink of significant innovation.

Great stuff Matty. Hope it gets approved and coded and makes it's way into 1.07 (?). Can't fault such a great piece of work, but would you consider adding a few things?

1. Would the Smallpox events also cause some Infantry to be disbanded?

2. Under the Mayan event series 'Europeanization of the Maya', Trade and Missionaries. Could you add an Option E, which gives them the opportunity to select Trade with Europe, but retain the pagan gods? Might look like this:

"Option E The Coatlist Priests: Stability +1; Remove CoT from Atlixco; add CoT to Guantanamo; conversions X 3; sleepevent 'Revolt of the Coatlists' "

Or would this affect nullify some of the later events. I just think it might be an interesting Aberration to have Pagan religion but retain the tech group of - say - Chinese.

Anyway, great work

I thought the same - in fact the event would need 'change religion to Pagan' in case they'd been force-converted previously.

Instead of giving the choice of lots of religions all at once, perhaps it's more reasonable to do the following: European countries whose religion is inclined to try to convert people (ie any Christian or Muslim) who own certain provinces (or neighbour the Maya) after a particular date get an event saying that missionaries are travelling from their land to Maya country.

Once that happens, the Maya get an event (based on the religion of the colonial power, so there'd be various versions of the both events) giving them the options of a full conversion to that particular religion (sleeping possible conversion events for other religions), tolerating the missionaries (a few provs convert) or killling/expelling them, with a tech boost for everything except getting rid of the missionaries (they learn about European culture and technology from the missionaries as well). That way, the Maya won't suddenly turn Catholic if the Caribbean is dominated by Granada, or Reformed if Sicily is the one to bring European technology to the Maya.

Also, I think the Maya need to be able go all the way up to Muslim tech (after say 1600) to have a fighting chance of survival, especially if they keep Pagan state religion. While it is a pretty good tech group to be in, they'll be starting from a very, very low base (judging by previous experience, the AI will have made almost no technological progress by 1600!). Also, the colonials will be out for blood due to CBs from 'Claim of XXX', the anti-Pagan free-for-all and (probably) their appearance on several colonial kill-lists; while they will get a big neighbour bonus, that's only fair given the sudden influx of foreign technology; and the 25% Pagan tech penalty is more than enough to punish them for not going all the way in emulating the Europeans.

In the 'official' history of the Maya presented here, they chose Muslim faith and supported Granada in the Gallic wars and so forth. They also had Al-Badajoz establish his college and move them into the Muslim tech group. So, the AI will chose this option most of the time. It will make for a richer, more complex North America with a local Sunni group to back up the Grenadans.

The idea you present of having the conversion event trigger via a European coloniser certain adds interesting layers of variety, something I am immediately drawn to. My concern though is that Eire, with its early exploration that could target the Caribbean, would almost always trigger that event and therefore the conversions in Maya. Unless Eire, Brittany and Scotland all deliberately avoided the Caribbean, it would rarely turn Muslim, as it did in the history presented here.

In addition, the concept history here commences with the Maya repelling early (probably Eire-ish) attempts at conquest. The colonizing Europeans then decide to avoid conflict with Maya because they are more challenging than colonizing all those nice easy areas with pliant natives, or seek out the gold in Mexico. The Maya survive, strengthen and begin trading heavily with the Europeans, keeping their faith intact. It is trade which eventually undermines the old faith. With the Mayan economy now dependent on trade with Europe, they have little choice but to give in to foreign demands to accept missionaries. The missionaries arrive and the king soon realises that the inevitable conversions will be easiest if he himself choses a faith and leads his people forward into a new era. He choses Sunni, and the course is set.

It was deliberately not a conversion based on the "first missionaries on the block", but rather the king's concious decision to make a choice from among the inevitable futures he was presented with. I like the character of this because it is so different from the normal process of religious conversion in the game.

Perhaps the solution is to make it more likely that the Maya survive to be able to recreate this 'historical' situation. With additional leaders and a 'call to arms' type event, the Maya will be an unlikely target, at least by players. The flip side would be that an AI Eire may squander itself in fruitless attempts at conquest.

I agree that the events which allow for tech group changes may need to be made earlier to help them become a viable country.

How do you generally feel about this proposal, though?

Just a couple comments -

First, events are limited to 4 options, so that proposed "option E" thing cannot be done within the original event. Maybe the original event should just be A/B, with the B choice leading to a secondary event, if you want to do something like that.

Second, the population-reducing events related to smallpox will probably need to be done on a per-province basis, as such events only work properly if fired for the country owning the province. It is possible that not all of the provinces in any given set will belong to the same country, in which case not all provinces would be affected. Also, the population reductions seem relatively small to me, considering the percentages of population that were taken out by European diseases. In some cases, you're only wiping out an amount equal to ten-fifteen years' growth. I would suggest upping the population hits by at least 400%.

Third, I would think that the chances of the Maya choosing Sunni should be based on the performance of Granada; if Granada is doing remarkably badly, then the Maya may be more likely to choose a Christian faith instead. I'm not exactly sure what the proper way of determining this would be, but it does make sense to me. The idea of a colonization-based event to determine religion is good, I think, and the concern that Eire might "jump the gun" and trigger the Catholic one first could be moderated by making the requirements they would have to meet higher than the requirements for other religions.

Sheridan,

Thanks for your comments here. Any comments generally about the tenor of these ideas? Do you generally feel this is a worthy direction or not?

Morespecifically, yes, we could always use an Option B trigger new event, or we could simply scratch the Reformed option and give them only Sunni, Cathlic, Protestant and Pagan as the options. That seems pretty reasonable.

As far the the Epochal Smallpox events are concerned, I'm disappoited to read that they won't trigger based on areas. I don't understand how the scripting really works, but I'll take your word for it.

I shouldn'y be disappointed, because in fact those swathe events are less accurate than an event which triggers for each province in the Americas. This means a lot of scripting, but it would make for a more accurate picture.

The fugures I suggested in the original events were just a starting point and related to their beginning pop levels. I really don't know what population level they get to by those time periods. If the evnts are to fire in a more historical manner then this is how each event should look.

Title: Small Pox Hits Savannah!
Trigger: European Colony Level One in Savannah
Effects: Reduce native population only by 70-90%

Now, I doubt that this is possible. I have not seen percentages expressed in events in EU2. I also don't know if colony presence/size can be scripted. And is there any way for the game to no that it is European colonizer, unless the event is scripted separately for each colonizing nation (times that by each individual province and we have a LOT of scripting). I say this because when played as a player, you can colonize as the Aztecs etc yet these should not trigger Smallpox events. Finally, I don;t think the game can tell the difference between Europeans and Natives in a province, can it? Otherwise the game would wipe out your colony as soon as you made it.

It is also really difficult to know at what level one can set the population reduction if it is in hard number terms, because you don't know what the population will be when the event triggers. What happens when plague reduces a population to less than zero? Is there a default minimum population, of, say, 1000?

Is it possible to have the event trigger when a colony is attempted, as opposed to established? In this way the native population (if there is one) if hit, but not the Europeans, as they haven't arrived yet. Somehow I doubt this can be worked.

Any ideas?

In regards to Sunni faith and the performance of Granada, I am still not convinced that the concept of the event should be necessarily triggered by a degree of of presence within the new world by Granada. If it can be accepted that (much like Japan and the Catholics?) the Mayans here have accepted missionaries into their lands under pressure from the Europeans with whom they trade, then the event should not require the Granadans to have an significant presence in the New World, but only to be there. Perhaps the event instead trigger not by date and not by country, but by the level merchants in their CoT (as the event only triggers if they have a CoT.)

Thus, whenever the number of merchants from Eire, Scotland, Brittany and Granada reach 11 or more within the CoT, then the event triggers.

Or, maybe it triggers for the first European country who gets to level 5 in that CoT, and it triggers only for that country, giving the Mayans only the option of adopting that faith or staying pagan. So, the evnt could trigger a maximum of 4 times, once for each of those colonizers (and others as well???) and only if the Maya are still pagan.

Ideas?

First of all, unless the backstory requires it, I'm against events that are tied to a specific date. Usually it is better to create a complex trigger that will allow the event to occur as soon as a collection of requirements is met. (For example, for personal use I was recently creating a series of events that gave extra CB shields; these were triggered by the country in question owning at least 50% of their existing CB shields that bordered each area.)

There is a default minimum population of 1000; I don't know what happens if you reduce a province with less than that, but that can be avoided by writing the trigger to require a fortress in the province. In terms of the amount of scripting, you can get away with one event per province, as it is not necessary to specify the owning country (it is possible to create an event that will target whoever the province owner is). And within those, you can limit out certain countries (for example, you could create an event that would fire if the province were owned by anyone other than Eire, Brittany, or Granada).

In terms of population growth... in my most recent game it is around 1685 and most native American provinces have populations of 9-12 thousand.... and no, you can't target the non-city natives, only the ones treated as actual nations (like the Iroquois). But in any case, a massive number like -20000 would slam the province down to the 1000 floor, which I believe would actually be historical (or nearly so) in many cases. (According to my sources, the Native American population in California fell by 90% due to the introduction of European diseases in the first 50 years after permanent settlements were built, and I doubt this was radically different than in the rest of the continent.)

As far as the missonaries-to-the-Maya issue goes, I like the flexibility of the "whoever gets there first" sort of events, though to fit your original idea that Sunni would be most likely, there are ways the individual events could be set up to lean in that direction. First, the AI is coded to be many times more likely to choose option A than any other option, so simply by making the conversions to other religions an option B, it will make it much less frequent. Second, the requirements to activate the event could be higher. (If we were going by number of colonies, you might require 5 to trigger the Catholic event but only 2 for Sunni).

I do not know if you can trigger an event off of merchants in a COT, though, and I doubt it is possible. If I were writing these events, I would choose a selection of nearby provinces and require ownership of a certain quantity of those (in any combination) by the same European power, perhaps with a second variant of the event with lower requirements with a later enabling date. The requirements, as I said, could be made significantly easier for Granada, if that were your intent.

(And actually it doesn't even need to be based on colonies. We could base off of their tech levels or province ownerships in Europe, but I think that would lead to situations where Granada or Brittany might be "influencing" a country that they have not yet discovered!)

I like a lot of your ideas Matty and Sheridan. I'm interested in the possibilities here of a much richer 'New World' experience for both the colonisers and the indigenous peoples.

I'm wondering whether a different event trigger could be used for "Cocom Xiu confronts the Invaders" and any other events where war with a non-american nation is desired. Would a trigger specifying 'at war = yes' and 'not war MAA ZAP' etc. for every other NA nation, meaning they'd have to be at war with a non-north american nation for it to trigger, work? This might be easier than seperately specifying every possible european enemy.

With regards to the europeanisation events maybe a neighbour trigger could be used to specify which culture/religion they might be subjected to first. Another option could be the 'discovered' trigger which is supposed to work when a given province (e.g. the capital) is discovered by europeans (I've had no experience with this one, Sheridan maybe you could say whether it would work).

I'm concerned starting the Aztec as both a vassal of the Zapotek and in their alliance might lead to their diplo-annexation rather quickly, is this what you're after Matty, or could some break vassal event be included? Also, perhaps the Maya could be the potential betrayers of the Zapotek if the Aztek don't exist.

I've noticed some of the epochal smallpox events seem late,
e.g. 1633 for the Eastern Seaboard whilst probably right for actual history might be a bit late with Eire as the first main coloniser. Again perhaps a discovered or neighbour trigger, like Sheridan's idea of having a certain number of bordering provinces in european hands, could be used here rather than a date.

Lastly, the survivability of the Maya and Navaho could be enhanced by ensuring they get to land tech 2 around 1500, allowing them to have access to level 2 forts.
