I think not all countries should be pushed back by threat..

Lets see.. you are Bulgaria, not allied with the Axis, but close to them, why you should turn towards Allies when Axis threat is high? they better go closer to be friendly and avoid war..

Damn you, now I have to restart my campaign because I have wasted lots of opportunity to do mischief to the preposterous allies. :D

Thx for your post, it really helped!

Some of those countries will get pushed toward Comintern. If Axis has high threat, but Allies & Comintern have low threat, then states will be pushed away from Axis. But the other rules still apply, so states near Russia or states with socialist (red) parties in power will tend to move toward the Comintern.

If you never use spies to raise threat in Russia, but you do raise threat in the Allies you can push even more states toward the Red corner. They'll be really scared of the Axis (because of high threat from war), they'll be somewhat scared of the Allies (because of your generated spy threat), so the net effect will push them toward the Comintern.

In my German game in 1940 America started drifting toward the Comintern because they hated me from my wars and they hated the Allies from my smear campaign. :)

What would be neat is if the AI could detect this and play off on it. If Russia had used influence on America...it would be super ahistorical but they could have really put some pressure on them.

I think stuff like that is fun, but if you want historical outcomes just balance the threat building and pay attention to the political grid to get your desired outcome.

If you play Axis, once you start a ton of wars your threat will build up so high you'll push most unaligned states away, so use the 3 buildup years to play your political games. :)

- As Germany influence America, Japan, and Switzerland. This will require a 6 leadership investment in diplomacy.
- Invest about 4 points in espionage. This will generate MAD amounts of spies
Germany has hardly 2 points to spare for espionage and diplomacy. The officer and research demands are so cruel.

Great, just great...
"Germany is not a threat to us! So what if they annexed Chechs, what should we really be aware of is that villainous Lichtenshtein! They have no land and surely wish to conquer their neibhoors."

You should have plenty of points to spare. Change your policy to "Big Education Investment" and research Education level 1.
Done that. But I still can't justify that kind of investment for diplo and espionage. Minor Allied countries can be easily conquered, but lack of officers and techs will cripple the country during the entire war.

i love this new par of the game and i think it works well most times ^^

But one Problem is still there which i belive it is in afact a bit too harsh and should be patched... If i don´t play germany, and the german AI plays historical Japan joins in the allies around end of 39 all the time.

So i love it but i think it needs a little bit work on it for the ai ^^

The above mechanics (OP) will be useful for MP games...
Specially as in SP games the German AI is enable to use it and as such if one plays the Allies it will get to Berlin in 38 using the above game mechanics.

Regarding SP but playing for the dark side (Dart vader style)... let's just say, "join the best or die like the rest!" :D

Who needs allies... when you can have puppets

Just stay out of the war until your hordes are ready, than depart in 4 directions and enslave them all!

great post...i do every thing manually except spying...but now i have an idea where to start...but wont it also be handy to create threat in the USSR besides britain? (dont like the scapegoat denmark scenario coz it feels to gamey for my taste)...this way you push all you european neighbours toward your corner...they are boxed in on 2 sides...(thinking of this as a way of keeping Romania from comitern, low countries out of the allies and finland neutral)

but all this is useless after the war...so what do with all those great spies after the decleration of war?

I’ve just ordered hoi3 and joined the forum because of three outstanding posts: GreenMarine’s here, a dev responding on a weekend with a promise of a prompt solution to a problem, and sagji’s contribution to the ‘1.2’ thread.

The OP’s post reminds me of a brilliant piece I once saw on the RTW boards, shortly after release, that listed all sorts of imaginative strategies and permutations no one else had ever thought of. The trouble was, of course, that these possibilities remained entirely in his head as the ‘diplomatic system’ failed the first essential test of man or beast or code – that of actually existing. The road from GreenMarine’s vision to fully executed reality will be a long one I’m sure, but I have a feeling it will be a fun one to travel.

This is some very interesting stuff.

The Soviets can completely ignore Espionage and Diplomacy for the most part however. They don't need to worry about puny nations joining the allies, and they are big enough that a historical axis force is not much more of a threat than a teched up Germany.

Indeed a good guide! But im not sure I like how this works, but it will probably take some getting used to. Thanks anyway.

Agree totally, a very good guide to a feature that immediately puts my back up! Hopefully as the patches come along there will some way of toning this down - Japan joining the allies if they have been at war with the Chinese should be nigh on impossible unless the allies (all of them) spent almost all of their diplomatic and inteliigence assets on this one outcome (and even then it should be unlikely).

It's obviously something I will have to get used to, but I still much prefer the intel system to be something that you put a small percentage of your IC into (to make sure your counter-intel is up to scratch) and then ignore completely...

And for an non historical game as Germany Target the USSR and Influence Poland. It might be possible to move east ward with Poland as an ally. (What if Hitler Hated/Feared the communist more then wanting parts of Poland)

This is just one example of how you can change thing in a reasonably historical manner.
