With so many people hyper-detailing their cities these days, is there any chance CO might consider increasing the prop limit? Is the limit technical or arbitrary? Would it even be technically possible to increase it, or would that involve some huge change to the way maps are saved or something equally massive?

I'm just curious why the prop limit even exists.

I'm guessing that the prop limit is around 64k?

If it is, then what CO have probably done, is have a big list (Array) of props, indexed by an unsigned short integer, which has a limit of 0-65535

If they've done that, then there's no way to increase the limit without a) massively increasing the amount of data stored in RAM and dealing with the bugs related to changing array size and index types, or b) rewriting a whole shed-load of internal code and dealing with the bugs related to changing the way indexing works ;)

ofc, if they haven't done that, then your answer is:- it all depends on how they coded it ;)

Spot on, the prop limit is 65531. (with 65536 as absolute max limit)

So indeed, changing it would require a serious overhaul of the game's base code, which won't happen.
