Playing as a Fanatical Egalitarian I was getting a few defections from planets of a failing empire that has Syncretic Evolution.

I immediately changed their rights to be consistent with my ethos of equality and made them full citizens. However, I am not able to remove their Prole status. I realize that the storyline is that they evolved to be workhorses for their former masters, but if I have sufficient gene tech shouldn't I be able to normalize them?

If you go for genetic ascension you can mod out positive traits as well as negative ones. Until then, there's not much to be done about it.

I think the fluff is that they've actually evolved or been selectively bred for strength and reduced intellect, so it's not really a matter of that just being a social distinction.

Does it affect their happiness or ethos?

I understand that you might want to "normalize" them so they can be put on useful tiles, but to be honest, celebrate the diversity of your empire like this:

"Hello. We are the Proletariat Species, former slaves of the Belgian Bummer Empire. We revolted and killed our former masters for their abuse and evil."

"Welcome to the Utopian Star League of Rainbows and Unicorns, friends! Here in our empire, you don't have to work in a filthy mine. You can pursue the fine arts, read Plato, or develop your psychic abilities. And we have a great financial aid system to help you get through college university."

"But... we like mining. And we really don't care about the arts. College is boring."

"Really? Because we have robots do that sort of thing around here."

"We just like working with our hands."

"Then why did you kill your masters?"

"We didn't mind working in the mines. The abuse and killings were somewhat bothersome."

"How about $75,000 a year plus benefits to work our Garanthium mines?"

"Sounds great!"

Yes, I agree that it is not just a social distinction according to the lore, and I do agree with that design decision.

The issue is that it is not a genetic trait that's exposed for genetic manipulation. I guess it is considered "positive," yet I was able to modify some of the remnants of their former masters to remove their Decadent trait.

Just out of curiosity, have you gone the biological ascension route? It should let you remove positive traits.

I haven't had a chance to use it while encountering species like the one you describe.

Actually, I'm pretty sure presentient traits are untouchable - I did genetic ascension and researched the tech and the proles I uplifted cannot lose the trait. It doesn't even show up in the gene modification interface.
