The following is a concept designed for Crusader Kings 2, under the working title Project Polyglot. This concept could be implemented through DLC, an updated patch, or as an exclusive feature within a higher difficulty setting.

Introducing all new language traits in CK2. Players can assign an ambition for their mature leaders to learn a foreign language. Random events could be prompted to boost language acquisition based on choices.

Initial characters of mature age start with their native language determined by origin (Ex: a Germanic character from the Duchy of Köln has the native language of German. A Slavic character from the Duchy of Krakow speaks Polish. A Slavic character from the Duchy of Moskva speaks Russian). Youthful characters, whether being the character under the player’s current control or offspring, obtain their language based on the native, ethno-linguistic status of the assigned guardian/mentor within the education phase.

Foreign language skill levels can be ranked by a 3-tier trait system of fluency: basic, intermediate, and fluent. The higher the skill level, the higher the attribute bonus provided from the associated trait is awarded to the character (Learning, Diplomacy). Characters that have their native language within the same ethno-linguistic family of another foreign language that they are learning could receive an acceleration bonus to their path of fluency (Ex: a Polish character can master Russian at a quick pace and vice-versa).

Possessing a foreign language skill can boost diplomatic relations towards foreign entities that possess the respective language. A character can learn multiple languages with considerable fluency, eventually earning the polyglot trait, which provides a significant boost to attributes (Learning, Diplomacy).

To make the concept challenging, diplomacy will have a more strategic approach that can feel more rewarding to the player. If a player has no desire to have their character learn a foreign language, yet conduct diplomacy with a foreign entity that also does not possess a mutual language, at least one party must have an interpreter assigned within their realm. The interpreter role could be either implemented as a court position or an honorary title. If it is a court position, the quantity is set to 1 interpreter. If it is an honorary title, there could be multiple vacancies for the interpreter role. Interpreters develop their own language skills independently through the A.I.
