Sorta, but why not give the player a chance get involved and let them do things? Let's throw in some new ideas to differentiate the two. Maybe instead of loot, the pagan faction joining the war gets a relationship bonus, prestige, etc. Or maybe they get a title/ land of the people they helped conquer?

Also, I always felt hiring mercenaries should carry some risk, and they currently don't do anything beyond fight for you loyally. Mercenaries often did what they wanted regardless of who was paying them, so having the ability to involve an existing pagan faction would simulate that. The horde you brought in ends up getting claims on your territory, since they fought for the land and liked it, or maybe they just go a pillaging spree.

The basis for this idea is that it gives the player more chance to influence things, and that is always fun for everyone.
The thing is that there's no way for me to make the AI actually help/not help when it's joined the war. The military AI can at times be dismal.
Mercs do bring risk, but only if you go bankrupt. Which only happens once in a blue moon since apparently there were essentially no expenses in Medieval times going by CKII.

Another question: I suspect Hymns of the Old Gods isn't working. I'm running PB+ARKO+CPR in this game. Playing as a norse, but the norse songs never actually start, not even when I start the game. They work in vanilla without mods, though.
VIET does stuff with the music, so that might be the cause.

sometimes it works when i besige cities to capture prisoners sometimes not, for example i ransack my cousins capital so i can slaughter him and his family, but for some reason i dont get the option D:
You don't get to imprison people every time. If they hide before the castle falls you can't take them.
This may be vanilla behavior, but when I tried getting my court down to a manageable size (it was over 30, I was trying to get it under 20) as a muslim, I found that the game spawned three lowborn female courtiers in my court every year. I'd marry them off to other people's realms, then the next year the game would spawn three more. Seems like it's creating a lot of unnecessary clutter. Any idea on why it's spawning so many, be it PB-related or not?

Another thing I noticed is that my imprisoned half-brothers were showing as members of my court, which I believe no longer occurs in vanilla for prisoners. I wasn't sure if it was intentional that they're shown in court (since imprisoning family is kind of a necessary mechanic for muslims) or what.

Running 1.101, PB 3.2.16, and VIET Assets and Events only for 1.101 beta.

I can't be quite sure it's caused by this mod, but during my Zoroastrian game I noticed that the Safavids who had the Birjand duchy, quite early grabbed pretty much all of Persia, he was even ambitious and had the ambition to become king of Persia. Yet he never formed it, ever; upon inspection it seems he couldn't because he needed 2 duchies, but had 3 creatable duchies he hadn't formed and "Hormuz" titular kingship, he could definitely afford to form them, he just never did.

And by not forming any of those he couldn't create Persia, despite it being his greatest ambition. Do you think it might be this mod? Otherwise which file governs such things, because there is definitely something off.
Vanilla issue, I'd imagine. While one can tell the AI whether to make more than one kingdom, there's no such setting for duchies.
I am having a big issue in my game with my lords all dying in personal combat. I am playing as Byzantium with PB and pre 1.3 Viet, posted on the viet thread and was told it might be the duel engine in PB. Every couple months after I appoint a new duke I end up inheriting his estates back and when I look at why he died it says he died in personal combat. I also can't seem to hold a feast without 2 of my dukes fighting each other and one of them dying. It is getting very annoying and seems to be leading to a lot of Super dukes as my lords are inheriting their counts estates from them all dying in personal combat. The duel feature is nice I just wish it wasn't so common.
I know of the issue, but it's caused by the New Duel Engine. Hopefully the next version of it will fix most such issues.

Meneth, can you look at the province of Djenné (c_djenne) in the de jure kingdom of Wagadu? I've tried looking at it myself, but it appears to be broken completelt beyond my understanding. (SWMH+PB)
I'll look into it; I think I've found the cause and a fix has been committed.
Alright, I have a question. How exactly do I use the shatter balance mod? I pick a nation, boot up, and essentilly the world becomes shattered, not not fully. Large parts of the map become black areas with no chars, and saving and re-entering the game to load from that save crashes the game. This is on 1.101, the most recent PB mod, and the most recent VIET and SMHM. These conditions are repeatable.
I'd recommend downloading the latest beta of PB; it might fix your issue.
I've found a bug (ARKO+PB), but I don't know if it's a vanilla one or a PB one. I know, though, that all the other times the event worked in vanilla.

As norse king of Denmark and Sweden, one of my jarls challenged me to a duel (a holmgang?). I accepted, but when I got the event that started the duel (and said my chances of winning were great), I got no events after it. Now several months have passed, still not outcome, and neither of us got wounded / maimed / killed.
Report it in the New Duel Engine thread.
I fulfill the other conditions though :mumble:
The opinion condition will always show as true even if it isn't true; it's a vanilla bug.

Checked the latest beta-build. Djenne still off.

There is still something amiss with b_dioboro, the county capital. Since give_title b_dioboro <char_id> did nothing.
The fix won't apply to saves, only new campaigns.
i'm playing as hre kaiser pb + swmh and fulfill the holy war conditions.. but still not possible to declare war against slavic pagan. :(
I assume you're not using VIET?
In that case could you send me the save so I can look into it?

(PB+SWMH) Was hoping to get my first real West Africa play through today but something isn't right. As the king of Wagadu I hold Djenne, but as you can see here on the left its called Jeriska and the baronies are independent. Also the barony of Djenne is missing entirely. Title search brings up nothing. Pure SWMH on the right.

Also I ruler designed my own character for Wagadu but I had 0 income even after letting it tick for a few days before finding the Djenne issue. Hope this makes the next update since Arko is working on West Africa stuff.
It should work correctly in the latest beta version, though only for new campaigns.
Hi Meneth, I don't know if this has been reported yet but there are a few little bugs in PB+SWMH, for example the provinces of Ibiza and another random province in the middle east have "no culture" and "west African" religion, and also the bholgar/volga bulgarian provinces are mostly tengri as opposed to Sunni (those are the ones I've noticed but there might be more bugs), this can be fixed by eliminating the whole "history" folder in "project balance's" folder but if I do that then I'm left with a lot of trade posts belonging to no one in northern Europe (they have the flag of Aquitaine and in the owners name has "---"). Is there any way I can fix this myself or do you plan to address this in the future?

I'll look into those issues and likely fix them soon.
Edit: A fix for the noculture stuff is now in the beta branch.
The Bholgar provinces are supposed to be that way though to ensure they get the correct tech levels; they're converted the moment you hit Play.

Meneth, does the Reformed Theme System require Diligent and Ambitious, or just one of the two? The localisation implies just one will do, and I've met all requirements and have not tampered with Crown Laws, but I can't enact this law.
One should be enough.
Make sure you actually meet the opinion requirement; due to vanilla issues it'll always show as true even if it isn't.

I'd like to make a small change request to the define.lua it seems there is some funky vanilla rules about the Zoroastrian sacred marriages, basically it seems that because it is sacred fertility decreases by three quarters, and the chance of inbreeding reduces to a fifth the normal chance. This being on top of the fertility being cut in half last patch.

I assume it's to make it easier, but what's the point of removing the negative consequences to a marriage like that? It already has the upside of prestige and relation increase, so it should be a trade off. Not to mention it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Unless we subscribe to the belief that their sacred marriage truly is blessed and protected by Ahura Mazda, but then the fertility decrease still doesn't make sense.

From defines.lua:
DIVINE_BLOOD_FERTILITY_MULT = 0.25 -- Fertility multiplier in a religious close kin marriage
INBRED_DIVINE_BLOOD_TRAIT_CHANCE_FACTOR = 0.2, -- Inbreeding: Multiplier to the base chance
I believe that only affects dynasties with the divine blood flag (meant for the Targaryens in GoT).
Wouldn't it then make sense it could take another step in the direction to a culture that is in the Northern culture group as well?
Eh, maybe, but they can still convert it to Norwegian; it just isn't sped up.

Meneth, about those issues I mentioned earlier in PB+SWMH, I just tried the beta branch, the "no religion" and "no culture" problem is fixed but the trading post who should belong to either gotland or utlande still appear as belonging to "---", also I noticed that at the 1066 start date, the duchy/jarldom of uppland is independent from Sweden (this during most of 1066 not just the "war of the two eriks" start date and unlike the religion issue with the bolghar which fixes itself by hitting play, this one doesn't, is this historical or intended?)

I'll look into the republic stuff.
The war is from vanilla, and does start earlier than the bookmark. In the current release version Uppland stays independent even if it loses, but that's been fixed in the beta branch.

Yes, anything until 3.3.0 should be compatible with saves.

Hi, this may already have been reported, but the Indian cultures file in PB + SWMHM compatability file is blank, so the Gujurati courtiers in Dibba (Dhu Zhabi) show as no culture. Copying the file over from normal PB seems to work fine

Is it just me or do sunni characters at court in shia provinces convert a little too easily? I dunno if that's moral authority (both sunni and shia have had moral authority in the 30-50 range for most of the game) or events or characters just like heresy or what, but when I was the sunni emir of Cyrenaica I had to sometimes make multiple demands per courtier to convert (back) to sunni.

I landed my heir and he turned shia within a couple of months, so the problem resolved itself when the heir inherited. Afterwards, the shia rulers I installed in my sunni provinces stayed shia. I dunno if that's because shia is the heresy or if I just had really bad luck with the old emir or what.

I do very much like the heresy modifiers being used for sunni/shia interaction, just seemed weird that so many courtiers were converting at first.
Yeah, that probably shouldn't be happening. I'll look into it.

also shouldn't the concubine childs have a disadvantage on succession?
Bastards can't inherit.
Children from concubines could historically inherit to my knowledge.

Regarding crusades: I won the 1st Crusade for Jerusalem with the intent of giving the kingdom away, and when the event to do so poped up I had already been crowned King (previously super-Duke), which resulted in me giving up half of my European possessions to Jerusalem...!

Not sure about this, but I think that I've seen a similar scenario from another mod in which the event to choose whether I want the crown or not started before the title was given to me, which would prevent the unwanted loss of non-dejure territories that the game assigns under Jerusalem for some reason.

Is it possible? Or was I drunk/dreaming/hallucinating? :unsure:
With the current beta, that should never happen any more. If you've got a save from right before the victory I'd recommend downloading the beta and playing from that save.
In PB, everything works fine for me, except for one thing - pagan coats of arms on the map look exactly like Christian ones. They don't have the round format :(

I have already cleared the cache and yes, it's the latest version, and I have the 1.101 patch. And it's definitely PB that causes the problem, I tried it out.
Are you using NBRT? If so, that's the cause.

Hey Meneth. Are you 'planning' any changes (in addition to the already extensive beta branch) that will require a new campaign before the next freeze? I'm debating whether to start a new game or wait.
Nope, it should be quite some time until I break saves.
At the moment I'm not aware of any bugs or such that would need starting a new campaign for them to be fixed.

I think this is where I post this, but I'm running VIET and ARKO, too.

Long story short, my Andalusians conquered all of Spain, but I was a little underwhelmed when I actually made the empire, because I became "The Sultan of Kingdom of Spain"

1) Where in the localization folders can I change "Kingdom of Spain" to Hispania or Iberia or something? And will that not break anything so long as I don't change e_spain?

2) Where are Arabic titles localized? I'd like something different than Sultan so I can differentiate my Sultan with others. Wiki says Badshah was the default.

Hello I'm playing SWMH with Deiou map which I think is close to PB I plan to start a PB playtrhough next game. Anyway, I'm having trouble with the city of Forli. It says it's a Kapetano (county) but when I give ti to a vassal or mayor I get wrong government type. When I give it to a church guy the wrong type foes away but I don't get any takes or troops.

On the other side of the Byzantine empire. I'm trying to create the kingdom of Cicilia in Turkey I have 7 out of 8 counties and enough gold but and piety and am christian but it's still greyed out. What do I need t o do to make it?
I'm afraid I don't know what could be causing your wrong government type issue.
As to Cilicia, in SWMH you cannot be a vassal of the Byzantine Empire (or the emperor himself). So you'll have to break free in order to form it.

Hi again Meneth, I really don't want to bother you with stupid little things, but this annoys me a little bit visually, there are a lot of decisions that lack an icon, is this intended?, I swear I would't bother you with this if I knew how to fix it myself.
