One thing that I have been wondering about is how will each successive upgrade variant work. Ok, so you have a little bit of experience from your air wars, and now you want to upgrade your fighter from 1940 base tech to something that suits your needs. So you put in a few points, one to attack, and one to range. After six months you have enough for another upgrade, so do you then upgrade from the last upgrade?
Will the variant that you have +1 in attack, and +1 in range be the default now to upgrade? Or do you have to save up more to upgrade from the base 1940 fighter tech with your second variant? That would mean that it would cost you more experience to upgrade if the four variant upgrades are back to 0.
I can see it working with the former in order to upgrade to a better variant, however this also pretty much guarantees that you will progress to the end and pretty much have everything fleshed out by the time the next tech level comes. This would be a four year gap since 1940 Fighter to 1944 Fighter. I can also see all the other big nations maxing out each potential upgrade slot as well, unless of course they really price the amount of experience for each variant level higher you go.
We don't just have fighters to be concerned about, our bombers could also use some variant upgrades. So one has to keep in mind that although fighters are probably the most important aircraft, but they won't win the war on the ground or at sea for you. If each level of increase for your variant goes up by a goodly degree, that way it could make it difficult to max out everyone of your aircraft variants, and can also make it a certainty that you will then spread out your experience to your other aircraft because the cost to upgrade those from base to something small, maybe one point in each of the four spots would be relatively cheap.
Anyhow, these are my thoughts and yeah, I know the game is in rough alpha and much work needs to be done still. However I am just speculating on how it will all work since there was a lot of talk about it in some of the recent threads.
