Hello,

I did my homework and checked to see if I could run the game. According to game-debate, I can run it on high, with my bottleneck being the gpu. According to cpuboss, my processor is better, I think, than the minimum, as it's just the clock speed that's lower. Systemrequirements lab says I don't meet the minimum, however, but I believe that's wrong as it tells me I can't run games like Far Cry 4 on my graphics card, when I see people running it on the same one via youtube.

However, after pre-ordering on green man gaming, I realised I've done a potentially stupid thing with the clock speed being lower than the minimum specs, despite what the comparison sites say.

My specs are as follows:

intel i7 4710 MQ, 2.5 ghz Quad core

8gb ram

Nvidia Geforce GTX 860m (4gb ram)

For reference, cpuboss comparison:

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4710MQ-vs-AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640

(I can't, unfortunately, find a comparison against the other processor under minimum. The two minimum processors are AMD Athlon II X4 640 @ 3.0 Ghz and Intel Core 2 Quad 9400 @ 2.66 Ghz anyway)

And game-debate:

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=23339&game=Stellaris&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core i7-4710MQ 4-Core 2.5GHz&gc_make=Nvidia&gc_deriv=GeForce GTX 860M 4GB&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements

So, have I done something stupid and should try to cancel my pre-order on green man gaming? It's really just the clock speed being slightly lower that's causing me to panic, especially as I'm not tech savvy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Typically minimum specs are not hard lines that you cannot cross, they are just the minimum you should really bother with. You're close enough that you should be fine.

It is likely though that you will face some lag/stuttering as your CPU struggles to keep up in later stages of the game. You'll probably have to run it at lower speeds if nothing else.

Thanks for the reply.

I pre-ordered because I, like an idiot, chose to believe the game-debate site when it said I could run it at a high level. So, I'm guessing it's not accurate if I'll likely face slowdown at the later stages? I need to know for future comparisons anyway.

I get 60fps on Rome 2 at rather high settings. Attila . . . granted, with lower settings, around 45 fps on the benchmark (ultra unit size, high unit details but no shadows). Can run Cities Skylines well enough too. This is annoying really, as I've been worried about running Total War Warhammer and I cancelled my Uncharted 4 pre-order to order Stellaris.

It's likely I'll upgrade my computer at some point, but if it's not going to run very well later, then I might as well try to cancel and order Uncharted 4.

You should always treat recommended specs as the absolute minimum you should have to run a game, or else you're going to have a bad time.

If you're below the *minimum* specs you're probably going to have slowdowns, especially since this a GSG (and GSGs burden the CPU heavily). I'd personally expect sub-30 FPS honestly.

I get 60fps on Rome 2 at rather high settings. Attila . . . granted, with lower settings, around 45 fps (ultra unit size, high unit details but no shadows). Can run Cities Skylines too. You shouldn't stress out! You'll probably be good for 30 FPS if you keep the game speed at normal for at least the beginning of the game.

You should probably try to play on smaller galaxies with fewer opponents as well.

Also, get a faster CPU :D

That's the thing really. That game-debate site is telling me I can run Stellaris on high, which I imagine covers the recommended specs. Total War Warhammer on medium - high (just over medium, I think). I'm really beginning to doubt the validity of the site.

I'm 99% sure you're be absolutely fine. The minimum processor might have a higher clock speed outright, but yours is a much newer, better-designed one, and likely beats the pants off of it pound for pound. The extra 160mhz means little when the minimal recommendation is a few generations behind. Besides, your processor is 2.5ghz base; it scales itself up as high as 3.5ghz with Intel's Turbo Boost tech, which is like a dynamic overclock of itself when safe and available.

I assume this is a laptop; just make sure you're playing the game with the laptop's Balanced or High Performance power management settings (rather than Power Saver, which some laptops will default to while unplugged). As some have said, it miiiiight not run perfectly when playing a 40-player, 1000-star campaign, but I'd be shocked if you had any troubles. If you want the added insurance, you could cancel at GMG, preorder through Steam, and give it a try when it comes out. So long as you don't play for more than two hours, you can refund it, even if it's because you couldn't run it. I doubt you'll need to, though.

I also believe you should be fine: Your processor is several generations better then the recommended AMD processor that I bought in 2009. Your graphic card should also be more then enough to handle such a game, it is basicly 3 generations better. Don't worry, you should have a great xp.

your CPU is just fine....clock speed matters sort of. There is much involved in how a chip performs than clock speed alone.

Your GPU is above minimum specs....according to UserBenchmark

as this seems to be the topic for it, where can I go to find out if my lappie can run this game? My desktop will run it fine, but I spend a considerable amount of time out of my house, and play a lot of EU4 on my laptop(less so now that my work has started cracking down on gaming during downtime, which blows, because I usually finish my work for the week by around midday Monday), and would like to add this to the rotation.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I should have trusted my gut that the game-debate site was reliable, but I just don't know enough about computers to know how important the clock speed is. Judging off what people are saying anyway, I should be fine. I was wanting to run it in a big galaxy, maybe not the biggest, but yeah . . . so not running it at a low level was important to me. :)

I've not heard of the gpubenchmark site, but I'm going to make a note of it to use alongside gpuboss, cpuboss and game-debate. I agree that system requirements lab seems iffy.

I don't know how different AMD and Intel processors are, but there's only a difference of 166 between the AMD one and mine. A difference of around . . . 455 compared to the Intel one. But your point's well received and I know I don't have to worry now. :) Out of curiosity though, does the processor automatically scale up? I had no idea about that feature.

I assume this is a laptop; just make sure you're playing the game with the laptop's Balanced or High Performance power management settings (rather than Power Saver, which some laptops will default to while unplugged). It is a laptop, yeah. I guess I should have mentioned that.

I would have ordered with Steam for the refund in case it was needed, but I managed to get Stellaris for £26 odd due to a 25% discount currently on GMG. Money's tight at the moment, so . . . figured I'd go for it due to the comparisons I ran. So, I just wanted to make sure I'd be fine with that small niggling doubt in the back of my mind with not being able to get a refund once the key is used.

Your cpu is better than recommended

That's good to know. :) Shows you how much I know. All my knowledge is gained from the comparison sites when it comes to computer parts.

So . . . it looks like Hearts of Iron 4 has the same specs, I think. Now to decide whether to buy it later on or take advantage of the offer for Hearts of Iron 3 DLC currently on Green Man Gaming, as I do own that game (have Semper Fi, but lack the rest). No point buying the DLC really, I guess, if I'm going to buy HoI 4 later.

I think you might be able to use the game-debate site I linked to. It seems like it be reliable based on what people are saying, but maybe someone else can recommend a better site. Hopefully others can help you.

So, I just wanted to make sure I'd be fine with that small niggling doubt in the back of my mind with not being able to get a refund once the key is used.

Looking at Stellaris's minimum specs, the Intel it asks for is a 2.66ghz quad-core, yours is a 2.5ghz quad-core, but a few generation newer. Better design, more efficient, more powerful. You're set. And yeah, Intel's Turbo Boost just overclocks the processor as needed, when safe and with adequate power, to push through high-demand situations. Most of their processors these days have it, but especially their laptop ones, since it's better to put a chip in that eats less power accept when it needs it most.

Anyways, yeah, like many have pointed out, you're in the clear, man. Enjoy the game. :D

Am I missing something? Your clock speed isn't 2.5MHz, it's 3.5MHz. It's way above recommended specs. Game-debate is right and you'll run Stellaris on max settings absolutely fine.

The i7 4710 MQ turbo boosts up to 3.5MHz. When it says 2.5MHz, it means that's its default before turbo boosting, which it should automatically do to increase clockspeed to 3.5MHz for high demand tasks like gaming.
