loans
Thanks for the tip on loans. I was actualy already using this technique of repeated loans, but I was getting annoyed with having to do it over and over again. I find loans are easy when giving them to a country in war... make sure they don't get completely taken over though, hehe. The largest 10% loan I ever managed to make was for 50 ducats to Netherlands, or something. The largest loan period was 100 at 1% to a bunch of countries.
One question; why is the Polish AI so stupid? There's a bug with my game/computer that if I close a game playing one country and open up a saved game with a different country, I open up to the country I just played... but of course, this isn't the one I wanted to open. One time it opened me up as Poland. I noticed it had no income, all interest spending, huge loan debts and no technology. And this was already mid 1600's. I got sorry and when I managed to open it correctly to my game with Turkey, I made sure I became allied and helped Poland regain some territory. But it still pissed me off.
I often wondered if there's a possibility to 'absorb' other countries' debts? Say when I vassalize Hungary and they're in huge debt, do I get to pay for it? Can I pay for it without vassalizing? Is this an option in maybe EU2? Or give them money specificaly to build something... I know countries did this historically so I was wondering if there was such an option.
My tip for starting a Polish grand campaign; exchange maps with Persia as soon as you can. It will happen. Go to England, exchange maps with them. Go to Spain. Exchange Maps. Portugal and France, same thing. By 1505 I had almost the entire map ready for me. All it took was some patience. I got a trading post in Table, Connecticut, the Siberian gold province, and, if I had more initiative, a trading post in one of the Vietnam places.
Another thing, stay away from the Hanseatic league and taking over the Teutonic Knights. It's worthless. Just take Courland and Novgorod if you want to mess with baltic issues.
An easy way to check Russia from taking over too much is to cut Kazan in two pieces, with one being completely surrounded by your territory. It's actualy pretty easy, there's a province there that is placed especially well for this procedure. This way Russia never annexes Kazan, even when they beat it to death over and over again.
Also.
Kremeltung is a damn nuissance with them being islamic. Nothing against Islam, but when playing with Poland you have to satisfy four religions; orthodox, catholic, protestant, islam. It sucks. So what I do is I just let them revolt all they want and go in there and take the damn place back, over and over again. This keeps them around ~5000 population, then when I get a rush of colonists, send one in there. Holy heck, it's so much easier this way.
One other thing. Build refineries early on with Poland. I know it's expensive, but it must be done. As for fortresses... I really don't care about them. Only after I get around ~300 per year do I start investing in these barricades. I go through the whole fortress thing when I create colonies. This way I have a city that one actualy needs an army >25000 to take... but there's no-one there with such a force... well, except me. So, in this new game I started yesturday, I have all of Australia, New England is in trouble of being named 'New Poland', and Africa is slowly succumbing as well. It actualy get's really boring after a while, hehe. I'd start playing on really hard but then I'd get my butt kicked to easily, hehe.
