Hi,

I'd like to try CK2 and downloaded demo from Steam, but it wouldn't start at all. I thought of buying the game but if demo is so encouraging...

Anyone had similar problem? Will full version work or it's better t see it fixed for demo first?

I can't even download demo, just nothing happens when I press the button. Anyway, demo is outdated as hell, so it might be better to borrow the game from a friend if you want to try.

Years of patching/expansions have made the demo outdated - and no longer representative of the current product. So, the demo is no longer supported (hence why it doesn't work). Paradox don't do demos anymore for this reason.

Steam's refund policy has somewhat filled this gap.

You can purchase the game on steam, try it out for 2 hours, and then return it, no questions asked. You can use this to see if (i) a game works on your system, and (ii) to see if you like the game.

The demo is extremely is outdated and probably hasn't been touched since the game's release four years ago. Since the Steam Summer Sale is right around the corner, you might as well grab the base game if not the Complete Edition. I would almost guarantee the base game would be no more than $5 or $8 and the Complete somewhere between $25 and $30.

You could also take a look at Youtube if you want to see footage of the game to get a feel for it. Look for more recent videos that have "Horse Lords" or "Conclave" in the title rather than videos from a few years ago.

It's post like this that make me wonder why they don't just permanently reduce the cost of the base game. The demo is outdated, the Steam refund system isn't good for a game of this depth as you can barely scratch the surface in 2 hours.

Thanks for replies.

I tried CK1 many years ago by borrowing a CD from a library. And it was just too easy, like going for Pisa and forming all kingdoms down to Iraq in just one ruler's lifetime. So, gameplay is not completely unfamiliar but vassal interactions were almost non-existent at the time, and I don't remember heresies being a major problem. The only thing people feared were super mongols ;)

And I agree with @nitroholic that pricing is strange. 30$ for base and 140$ for complete is quite an extreme. Probably will settle with base plus Old Gods plus Horse Lords and maybe Rajas. Still will cost a fortune unless everything's on sale...

I think the price is still worth it, especially considering how much gameplay you get out of it. And I see a bit of "patron of the arts" logic in the pricing too.

If you're only going to play it a little, maybe 100-200 hours total, then the base game is all you need. Maybe you'd need to buy 1 more DLC to unlock a specific religion or government type (or flesh out an existing one) that you really want to play, but that's really it. You don't need anything more. Buying all the other DLC and cosmetic mods then becomes a way for hardcore fans who really want to play the game to death to support Paradox and fund further development of the game (additional DLC).
