The main problem I don't really see any reason why a player would ever choose to go Muzalite in the first place. Compared to normal play you gain 4 courthouses early, but in return you have many more conversions you have to make in Iberia, and have far less missionaries to do it with thanks to both the increase in inovativness and the decrease religions missionaries. Also, now any expansion into north africa will be more troublesome because it is now a Suni/Mutazalite mix rather than all Suni, and there are no longer same religion provinces in north africa for you to conquer.

My recent experiences playing Cordoba was that in 1470 I had a heretics event that converted Gibralter to Mutazalism. All well and good I thought, I continued playing until I got the convert to Mutazalism event. The my capitol and two random provinces also converted to Mutazilism: Toledo, Gibralter, and Gibralter. The Mutazilite caliphate event also tends to convert less than 5 seperate provinces.

Because the random number generator in EUII and the other Paradox games I've played tends to be poor, it seems like a wise idea to, rather than to have all the conversions at once, to establish a random event or series of events to do the conversions.

Its my understanding that the conversion to Mutazilism is supposed to help with the conversion of the Iberian Christians, when in terms of game mechanics it makes things much more difficult by both drastically reducing the number of missionaries available (to 0 per year with all A choices and no random events), and also substantially reduces the income of the Granadan player, with most provinces now getting -45% income between the wrong religion and ten year revolt risk.

I love the story behind Mutazilism, but unless some things are changed I can't see why any human player would choose to go with it.

We have only recently developed it - I may draft some events to help with the conversion of Iberia, I also think the tech should be increased in speed to widen the difference between Sunni and Mutazelite.

Edit : Regarding North Africa, why is it difficult to conquer North Africa? The Mutzalite Caliphate triggers for them and they usually turn Mutazelite.

But you could say that about Poland's "The Sejm Veto All Your Policies" events in the vanilla game - of course a human player is going to go behind their backs... or the Ottomans' "End of the Lali Devri" event: of course a human player won't choose A and throw away Orthodox tech. Should every event have an eye on game balance?

Would it be alright if I revised some of the Mutazilite events and added a couple of new ones? I think I have some clever ideas for making the Mutazalite/Suni choice less clear cut even without modifying Mutazilism

As to the difficulty in Africa, its true that Morocco and Algiers get events convertging them, but they only get two provinces converted. I'm not sure that either can really be expected to convert the rest of their provinces by game end but I guess thats something that has to be tested.

Mu'tazilis initially focused on attacks on Islam from non-Muslims. However they soon became focussed on debating other theologies and sects within Islam itself. In the 16th century, Abu Kamal of Valencia, the famous Muslim astronomer and noble, embarked on an ambitious plan to make the Mu'tazali teachings more appealing, by constructing the magnificent Library and University of Al-Tawheed (Monotheism) in Cordoba that would act as a beacon for the rational and logical teachings of the Mutazalites. Symettry,

Thanks for your suggestions here. It would appear that you have posted your material about the same time that Calipah posted his. As he is the Master of Our Islamic World I would like to leave him to comment on your changes and additions and perhaps the two of you can produce a good final set of events.

(Then I will make my usual arrogant adjustments to some of the triggers and commands, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk ... )

However, being elitist in nature, it never gained ground with the masses, and its adoption by the rulers and the subsequent persecution of Sunni scholars made it appeal even less to the public. In the middle of the 16th century, Abu Kamal of Valencia, the famous Muslim astronomer and noble, embarked on an ambitious plan to make the Mu'tazali teachings more appealing, by constructing the magnificent Library and University of Al-Tawheed (Monotheism) in Cordoba that would act as a beacon for the rational and logical teachings of the Mutazalites.Imams and Clerics of the Mutazelite sect roamed the Andalusian lands converting the populace to the true faith. With the tempo of conversion growing in iberia, the Sultan declared himself the Caliph of al-Andalus and North Africa, and with that, the last ties between Cordoba and Baghdad were severed."

God does no evil, and he demands not from any human to perform any evil act. If man's evil acts had been from the will of God, then punishment would have been meaningless, as man performed God's will no matter what he did. Thus the Mu'tazalites pressured the Caliph of al-Andalus to undertake the task of reforming the law system on which the state was founded, a kinder and more tolerant version of Islamic shariah. The Caliph immediatly embarked on a complete overhaul the likes never seen in al-Andalus, or the Islamic world for that matter."

I fiddled around with the Alhambra event (which I dont find any basis for) and added some new flavour Andalusian events...

He built a new Rusafa (Ummayed Palace), in memory of the country palace he had left behind. He composed a little poem, in which he bared his soul:

-In Rusafa I came upon a palm; here in the Western lands a sight so rare, I said; You stand alone, like me so far from home, you miss the children and our loved ones there; you have not grown tall in native soil. Like you I must breath this alien air-

Originally a pleasure palace, the Rusafa was built during the 8th and 9th centuries by the Ummayed Dynasty, it is a sprawling citadel consisting of royal-residences, court complexes flanked by official chambers, several baths, and a mosque, all in proximity to Cordoba. A varied repetoire of Moorish arched, columnar and domical forms, the palace and its vast courtyards were intended to be a physical realization of descriptions of Paradise from Islamic poetry. The Palace contained a most elaborate Courtyard, with a flush and all year flowering garden,a zoo, and wonderous ponds. Some of the Christian diplomats even called it the Garden of Europe. In 1569 AD, the Sultan hired the Byzantium Turk Mimar Sinian to undertake an expensive building project intended to expand the Rusafa into a glorious spectacle that would awe and humble visitors for centuries to come."

I'll download these, number them and insert them in the Cordoba file.

Excellent work, both of you. ;)

Should the Malwas line in Cordoba be allowed to go Mutazelite? I see them as the militaristic/unenlightened/narrowminded branch of Cordoba.

It would be a simple matter of having a NOT = { flag = malwas_army} inserted into the initial Mutazelite event.

By the time the Mawlas revolt, Cordoba would be completely Mutazelite in thought and philosophy. We can however, have periodical "Revolt" Events from the enlightened masses for example.

The Mawlas System event triggers between 1474 and 1478, whereas the key Mutazelite event is 1492.

Currently to form the Malwas is action a, but if instead we make it action b, then at least the ai will be less likely to pick it.

In this way, going with the Malwas may give certain military advantages, but at the expense of getting Mutazelism.
