Hi All!

HoI runs OK, but when I hit 'Quit' button, instead of returning to Windows, a so-called Windows 'blue screen' appears (you know, the 'blue death' with 16-bit numbers like 0x8000:3453F, etc.) and I hit 'any button' following the instructions. Now I get back to Win, but the screen resolution changes to 800×600 (originally it was 1024×768), and I have to set it back manually.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, of course, sorry for inconvenience.

PAN (Scandinavian) release 1.03
Windows 98 4.10, build 1998
CPU: Intel 700 MHz
RAM: 384 MB
Free space: >5 GB
Video card: NVidia TNT2 Aladdin with 32 MB RAM, driver version: 4.13.01.4109 (latest)
Sound card: AC '97 onboard, 4.06.1096 (latest)
DirectX 9.0

The exact message of the 'blue screen' is something like this:

Code:
0E fatal exception in the program 0028:C188FA09 at VXD DSOUND (03) + 00000559

All other pieces of information is given above.

Please note: I didn't have any problems with 1.02.

Thanks for your kind help and patience. :)

First thing to try is renaming your AVI folder to AVI_Back.

Strange....

It's possible that something odd happened when the patch was applied over 1.02. Please back up any save games you want to keep, then use the uninstall procedure found here to ensure that it is completely uninstalled. After that, reinstall from the CD and then patch directly to 1.03. I *think* that this will probably resolve the BSD's (blue screens of death).

That's exactly what I did before posting this thread. :(

Based on the error message, I would say your system does not like something with the sound card. Possibly asn interaction between it and DirectX9. Maybe it is not fully compliant with 9.0.

Can you run a Direct X diagnostic for us please. You may also want to try it with the music disabled from the HOI settings program and see if that makes a difference.

What about the Direct X diagnostic?

I have the exact same problem and have had it since at least 1.02. Crash to desktop on exit with screen resolution changed to 800x600. Haven't copied down the crash message though. And yes, I renamed the AVI folder.

My system:
Athlon 1.33GHz
512Meg memory
Directx 8.1
Geforce2 GTS card nvidia 4.13.01.4109
Windows 98Se
Cmedia 8738 sound on motherboard
Cmedia 1096 drivers

Haven't tried disabling the sound though. It's the only thing Tarantin and I have in common.

I disabled the Cmedia sound chip in the system folder and I didn't get the usual crash when I exited. "Sounds" like that is the problem. I always assumed it was a video problem since that is the effect that was "seen". Guess it simply crashed before it could reset the video settings. I don't want to play without sound so unless Paradox plans to look into this soon, I guess I will have to "driver" on out and buy a sound card.

Sounds like maybe the onboard sound cards are not full DirectX compliant?

I am wondering if there is a motherboard update you guys could download? Do you have the latest drivers for it?

I downloaded an alternate set of drivers from Cmedia. The version 639 (WDM) drivers instead of the 1096 (VxD) drivers. These seem to be working. No blue screens the last two times I exited HOI. The web site mentions there are some differences between the two versions. The WDM version seems to be for the latest OS's while the VxD is for the older OS's. Anyway it works.

Yes I remember this from another thread where a user had problems thanks for the update and the knowledge that it fixes this problem as well.

Wait, my problem is not solved. I also tried upgrading for VxD to WDM driver, but it doesn't work due my system is Win 98, which is not WDM-supported. So I think there should be a solution for VxD too.

Nevertheless, thank you all for help. :)

The only thing I can tell you is to revert to a previous version of DirectX say 8.1 or 8.2.
I would say your onboard sound card is not DirectX 9.0 compatible. :(

You could try contacting the manufactor and see if the are working on a fix. Let us know thanks.

My system is also Win98SE. The WDM driver is listed on the Cmedia site as being for XP, 2000, ME and W98SE. If it won't run on your system, then I would suspect the DirectX9 also. Maybe you don't have all the patches for Win98?

Interesting, Tarantin, did you actually try them?
