Hey guys (and girls), I'm having a problem with using a lance in this game. Now first off, I've played the original mount & blade. It was a very automatic process that was something I never really even had to think about and by what I read in the manual it should be the same way in Warband, yet that is not the experience I'm having.

Here are some of my details:

Tried version 1.00
Tried version 1.102
Riding skill of 7
Agility of 28
Polearm skill of 102
Tried light lance, heavy lance, pike, and a few other type of lance style polearm weapons that have a sharp tip.
Riding a spirited charger
Have tried with and without a shield
Have tried fully encumbered with armor and also fully unemcumbered.
I have tried with multiple toons and started different games.

I have entered multiple battles and no matter what I do all my character will do is ride with the lance carried in a vertical position. I have ridden across level ground and even slightly declining ground and achieved maximum speed on my mount, yet at no point will my character lower his lance so that I can perform proper lance attack.

Is there something that I'm doing wrong or is there something different that you need to know that you didn't in the first mount & blade? Is my game just bugged? Any help/suggestions would be welcome as this is my preferred method of attack in this game and I'm feeling sorely disappointed so far.

You have to manually couch the lance now by changing "weapon mode". To do that, push X while moving at a speed fast enough to permit it. The lance will only be couched for 5 seconds or so, so be sure you're close to your target before you push it.

The same button is used to switch between "throwing mode" and "melee mode" for many thrown weapons now as well.

In general options above the damage to player setting they added lance control. It still feels like "sack of potatoes on the tip" when set to automatic but it will lower itself without "fumbling for X".

Why not just change the keys? I'm currently using ctrl to couch my lance...
