I saw a TV documentary a few years back that argued that the Spanish Inquisition really wasn't half as bad as it was cracked up to be.

Could this be true?

I'm waiting for another such revisionist programme, like 'Mother Theresa: Anti Contraceptionist Murderer!'

It wouldn't surprise me if the evils of the Inquisition have been exaggerated over the years. History of this time is full of exaggerations one way or the other, inspired by political, philosophical, religious or other motivations. Makes for wonderful PR.

It doesn't make the Inquisition any better though.

BTW, I prefer the Mel Brooks musical number...

See the book The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice by Christopher Hitchens. It reveals (or purports to reveal) her connections to despots and white-collar criminals.

I expect we need the Spanish Inquisition to ferret out the Pretender . . .

You know, not much has become of my proposal for them to battle it out in a grand campaign of EU. Think about it, two AAR's from the same game written from the perspective of the winner :) and loser :( !

But, since that may be too time consuming, maybe they should just face-off in a beer chugging contest. I'd like to see how the normally esoteric discussion of Poland vs. Sweden progresses as they put down the pints!

Rofler, if someone can pay for my flight ticket to Stockholem (From Australia :D) I'd be more than willing to seek to challenge the mighty Greven of Stockholm. Or perhaps we can do it online, with referees!

I doubt Greven would ever get beyond 'estoeric' in his discussions, no matter how much cocaine he just snorted ;) I on the other hand, would fold like a paper cup..

Some betting advice from a Heineken expert:
I think I would put my money on Sapura, if beer is still as expensive in Sweden as it used to be. Most swedes usually get drunk only twice a year, on the ferry that takes them to Denmark or Germany for the summer holiday, and again on their way home, consuming large quantities of tax-free Carlsberg.
Should be a piece of cake for Sapura, with all that Foster experience he probably has :)

greetings, Oranje

Beer is expensive in Sweden? So it's not all fun and games like Johan / Doomdark and Greven keep saying eh? :)

Yes Sapura,

beer is expensive in Sweden, just as a lot of other stuff too, although the swedes might say in defence that all the heavy taxes serve to keep an extensive social system in place.
Sweden is a beautiful country though, from what I saw on several occasions, although the same can be said for Australia too (have only visited Victoria and NSW though).

Perhaps we are speaking of two different Catholic faiths? Since I live only a few miles from a Polish National Catholic Church cathedral, an 'Old Roman Catholic Church,' a 'North American Old Roman Catholic Church' and a 'Latin Rite Catholic Church' (sedevacantist for those of you keeping score at home) and several dozen of the less interesting Catholic Churches (including my own lest anyone think I am merely poking fun), it seems as if there are room for any number of other 'sole defenders,' at least if someone is not terribly selective as to what they are solely defending.

Still, I'd vote from the drink-off, just on principle.

Can I just say. From personal experience, that's bollocks! And I think all the guys in Stockholm will back me up on this. As for Sap vs Greven, well Greven drank me under the table and I'm no light-weight (it's not called tha amphibious corps for nothing, they all drink like fishes).

Oranje,

Yes, I've been there once, when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Victoria and NSW are very nice places to live in, though I live in Western Australia, probably the best place to live in the world :) .. if it wasn't for the lack of cheap high bandwith internet :(

From what I know of Greven, he's an international man of mystery, able to leap tall building in a single drunken bound, bullet proof, and stronger than an English historian on metho. Besides which, it wouldn't be fair, he's had 10 years of drinking experience on me, I'm only a young lad of 21. He's an alcoholic dynamo :(

Dragon,

Well Sap. I think you should be able to write a trip to Sweden off as a business expense. Send the bill to Johan and have him push it through for you.

Rofl. That is the best idea I've heard in quite a while. It'd go something like this:

Sapura: I want a free trip to Stockholm

Johan: Win lotto?

Sapura: d'oh.

This is all true enough, although about half of the population (me included) wouldn't defend the expensive welfare system too much.

However, the high punitive alcohol taxes don't stop us from drinking a lot. Especially not, I think, us poor sods up by the polar circle. (There is a healhty illegal moonshine production going on to supplement the regular stuff. :d)

I will say this about Sweden though, although it is not necessarily connected with the high (world's highest) taxes: No other country I've visited (including the USA, England, Germany, France, Holland and Switzerland) feels anywhere near as clean, safe and well-ordered. For this reason, Swedes abroad tend to think that nothing bad can happen to them...

As for the Spanish Inquisition being 'not so bad', I imagine it was pretty awful if you were a victim.

Suggestion for Multiplayer: If you are playing a Catholic country in a multiplayer game and defeat a protestant opponent, you can subject the loser to the 'inquisition'

I think a suitable torture would be changing the loser's game sound files to play 'Livin' la Vida Loca' for the rest of the game.

Doomie - I agree with you that Sweden is gorgeous country, and this is coming from someone who visited in January! However, I think that Norway is even more safe and possibly a bit cleaner as well (at least when I visited 10 years ago). However, the trade-off there is that it's much less exciting. I was pleasantly surprised by the active jazz scene in the Stockholm night-clubs.

Matthew Wallhead - Can you please be more accurate when you use the 'reply w/quote' feature. I really don't want to be associated with the incorrect belief that Swedes get drunk only 2x per year. Thanks
