When zipping up the file as per the wiki, make sure you rename the file correctly. By default many zip programs will name your archive (for example) 2200.01.01.ZIP but it needs to be 2200.01.01.SAV for the game to find it. If the file is a .ZIP you can go into windows explorer and simply rename the extension from .ZIP to .SAV (if you can't see the .zip or .sav you will need to turn on "File name extensions" in the windows explorer).

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for trying, Midnight Serenade.

When I try to load an edited .sav file, the game says that the file is broken and has starting date xxxx.xx.x displayed (or something like that).

I used notepad+ to edit and 7-zip to re-zip the file. Has anyone successfully edited a save file?

If you can post the exact message it may be helpful. I've been editing the save file extensively and i've run into no issues (though deposits in the save vs ingame are frustrating me a little).

Sadly, it's possible that a rogue edit has made it into your file as well, which means you may have to go through the entire save or start fresh (or use a backup from prior to editing).

I originally had the same issue. See if these pics help.

Zip the files, not the folder
214corr.jpg

Rename inside 7z and use these settings
11l4izp.jpg

I always save zipped files to the same location as the originals, so I have to move the .sav file back to my current playthrough's save games folder.

1. Open the .sav with Winrar
2. Drag and drop the files on the desktop or w/e.
3. Edit gamestate with notepad++
4. Repeat step 1
5. Drag and drop gamestate into the .sav
6. Set compression to Store, remove test files & time.
7. Click OK and overwrite.
8. Done.

There's no need to rename or redo anything.

I don't understand why you guys even need to use 7-Zip or Winrar to do this when Windows' Explorer is more than sufficient to handle the compression/decompression.

1. Rename the save file 2200.01.01.sav to 2200.01.01.zip
2. Double-click open the zip (like you would for a folder) in Windows Explorer
3. Move or copy that gamestate file outside of the folder so you can edit it in Notepad++
4. Once you're done editing and saved, drag/copy the gamestate file back into that zip file and say yes to replace
5. Rename the save file 2200.01.01.zip back to 2200.01.01.save

It's THAT simple, guys. You don't need Winzip, Winrar, 7-Zip, etc. to do this. That wiki instruction is junk and utterly unnecessary.

HI guys! I have a little problem with editing the save files. Whenever I modify something and then I load the save there is nothing. Everything is zeroed, everything disappear (planet, ships etc.) Even if I just for example change the amount of minerals I have. Can someone tell me what might be the problem?

More than likely you have compression on. What are you using?.

Except it's not that simple. I edited using Notepad++, and tried using Windows Explorer, and when I dragged my gamestate file back into the zip file, it compressed it in a strange way, so now the zip file is only 1043 KB instead of its original size, 1197 KB. Opening it in the game shows it to be corrupt and unplayable. I'm using Windows 10, don't know if that matters.

EDIT: Using 7zip and using tc=off, it worked. The file size was still smaller though, I'm not sure why.
