I play as Japan and I have this troubling country modifier called "western trade" I've heard that "enforce Sakoku law" would remove it...but nothing happens except that I lose 200 from each power (I have lost about 800 to this crap". Now I have t worry about "Fumi-e" events all over my country because I can't remove the damn catholics. Is this a bug?

It is like that, I believe that you get some bonuses for having that event. I also believe that you get more missionary strength.

So I'm supposed to pay 200 of each power to recieve nothing? it even says in the game that's everything it does: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=335113400
the only positive thing about "western trade" was someting about -3% military technology cost, and the negative sides are -5% missionary strength, yearly prestige -1

And Sakoku law should make it go away: http://www.eu4wiki.com/Japan#Enforce_Sakoku_Law and give me some other bonuses...but it won't work. Nothing happens.
That's why I think that it's a bug or something. Don't really know what you mean with "It is like that"?
I also have to defeat stacks of 70 catholic rebels thanks to this, and they grow for every time.

I just find it odd (and hilarious) that the only way to actively convert provinces as a catholic daimyo is to enact sakoku law.
Yeah, can we please change it so that the "western trade" event doesn't fire if you're Christian, and the modifier disappears of you convert?

Yeah, well. I also played through it. Those rebel stacks are out of proportion by far! I mean, a stack of 40k catholics... that would properly have drained all catholics of all Japan back in that day!

Why should it? Being Christian doesn't automatically make you "Western" in EU4 terms.

Hello, I've just fixed it myself.
In the decisions/JapaneseNation.txt change:

effect = {
every_subject_country = {
limit = {
primary_culture = japanese
}
remove_country_modifier = "western_trade"
add_country_modifier = {
name = "sakoku_law"
duration = -1
}
set_country_flag = sakoku_law
}
set_global_flag = japan_is_closed
add_adm_power = -200
add_dip_power = -200
add_mil_power = -200
}

for

effect = {
remove_country_modifier = western_trade
add_country_modifier = {
name = "sakoku_law"
duration = -1
}
set_country_flag = sakoku_law
set_global_flag = japan_is_closed
add_adm_power = -200
add_dip_power = -200
add_mil_power = -200
}

Works well. Removes Western Trade and fires Sakoku modifier.

Posted it if other solutions didn't work.

Have fun.

I arrived at the Sakoku option and clicked it. Then I found my way here. Do I have to wait for a patch to continue the game? I'm in iron mode.

What if those supporters of western mythology take another province? Is there really no way to remove them? I can live with 2 provinces being heretics, but not 3. How can I get my nice 200x3 back? It puts me back 2 years in development.

If you're in ironman, yes you must wait for a patch with Japan or stomach western trade permanently.
