In my progress it seems impossible to do the mechdur missions and so i'm feeling stuck... just have a jaegermech, 2 dragons and 1 griffin. against 6-8 heavy mechs and 0-2 assault tanks(together not one after another). is there a way to get new missions by waiting? or do i have to retreat once i'm landed?

I'm not that far in the story yet, so forgive my ignorance. Are you talking about story missions or merc contacts? If the latter, you can always just fly to another planet and see what contacts they've got there. You don't have to have a Travel contact to do so if that's what's tripping you up.

Open your navigation screen. Pick a nearby planet with lower difficulty (fewer skulls). Pay for the travel yourself. You do NOT have to do 'only' the missions on your Contacts page. There will be an entirely new set of contracts at any other planet you visit.

I see people getting caught in this trap ALL the time, after the second story mission when they get brought to a planet WAY harder than what they have been used to. And yet people persist in asserting that there is nothing wrong. The game NEEDS some sort of reminder text at that point to tell the player that they can travel somewhere easier.

I'm not sure if I understand the question... are you saying there's just one contract at the planet and you don't think your lance can handle it? If so you can travel to any other planet and grab a new contract, you just won't get to travel for 'free' like you would with travel contracts. Typically it's around 30k to travel to another planet, which is cheaper than trying to rebuild a messed up mech.

It does tell you that you can travel anywhere you want in a big popup dialogue box. Not sure what more you could ask for.
