Using 103b I keep getting the "I could be a better..." events even though I don't believe I should be. Are those events fudged so that, for instance, a guy with a martial of zero might sometimes say he would be awsemome at the head of your armies?

Last night it happened again when a guy with a 13 stat saying he would be better then the 13 stat guy who was already doing the job. OK, thats possible, maybe it was a 13.2 character saying he would make a better Steward then the 13.1 stewardship guy who currently held the position.

But other times, I've had guys with Pnemonia insist they would be better at the job then my current Steward with 10+ stewardship. I don't know, does the game sometimes lose track of the fact that I already have a steward, or perhaps, does the event not take stat modifiers from illnesses and such into account.

Is anybody else seeing anything similar?

in my games the thing is very useful, suppose a good courtier is in your court - you might have overlooked him,

about your remark that courtiers with comparable stats are making a claim for the position. That's only natural imho. The event has been excellently written =

- either, he is better (perhaps more healthy, etc.) so give him some money and appoint him,
- either, he is equal but you don't want to loose him, say just "bla bla",
- or he is a bad courtier who shouldn't have contended and you just send him off,

or is your problem that the engine forgets to distract disease penalties? Not totally clear to me tough,

I probably wasn't as clear as I should of been.

I will get the " I could be a better..." event for a character with a stat of 5 diplomacy. He is saying he would make a better Chancellor then my current Chancellor with a 14 diplomacy stat. Is this WAD?

With the rest of my post I was merely attemting to say, "If it is not WAD, could the cause of it happening be the following..."

That can't happen.

The only thing which can happen is that a courtier with a slightly lesser stat (say 11 instead of current 13) feel the right to complain because he's proud, whereas your current appointed character is modest.

I.e. proud character will complain sooner (stat wise) especially if the appointed character is modest.

Other than that, very good characters will more or less always complain if not appointed. And ultimately, they will go. This is just fair, and tend to reduce the over-breeding exploit of the human player...

Hmmm... I know for sure that just two days ago it happened to me on three occasions in about two months of game time. The third guy had Pneumonia and a zero stewardship stat. I'm not sure if his unmodified stat was close to the existing steward's. As far as the other two went, they had a stewardship of 8 and 5 although I don't remember if they had illnesses giving it a downward modifier.

Your comment, and what I've seen, makes me wonder. Is the event working as intended? Is the event supposed to use a character's modified stats? Or his unmodified ones?

Overall, I like the event and I am not saying it should or shouldn't work in a certain way. I can easily see someone deciding to write the event such that the complaining character needs to be at least close. Or, write it such that even a guy who can't feed himself will suddenly rise to his feet and declare himself a better candidate.

It's just that three peons in a row annoyed me enough that I wanted to know... Is the annoyance WAD, or is it a bug.
If it is a bug, I thought I'd let people know about it.
If its WAD, no big deal, I am sure there will be other gameplay annoyances. (The Mongols are going to annoy the heck out of me too when they show up. :D)

In my current game I have a steward with 16, so far I have had 3 "I could be better" from coutiers with 13. Not a major problem really, people complain all the time anyway so its pretty realistic to see this ;)

Don McKinley, was your steward a woman ? Did you just marry her (or did she just get married inside your court) ?

When a woman get married, if she had a position before the mariage, she will lose it, and need to be re-appointed.

If you forget about it, nearly everyone and his dog will ask for the position because it is now free !

This is happening all the time, and I am glad the event exist just for that: It remind me of the bug...

When the first event kicked off, I immediately checked if my Steward had died. No. Still there and still with a high stat.

When the second event fired, I fired my Steward and then reappointed him on the theory that something in the game might of gotten corrupted and it no longer thought I had a steward.

When the third event kicked in, for a guy on his deathbed, that is when I began to wonder eactly HOW the event was supposed to work and if was actually working that way.

Thanks for the suggestion though. In 1.02 I did get burned that way once. Sigh. Lost half my army.

Actually, I just might. If so, it would be on my machine at home (no internet) and I would have to zip it onto a floppy and bring it in tomorrow.

If I remember right, I believe it shows the guy with pneumonia and the person he wanted to replace.

If I do have one, do you want me to send it someplace? Where? Not sure what it would help except maybe keep peope from thinking the "Hears voices" event happened to ME. :D

Unfortunately, I havn't a screenshoot, but it happened to me too. A courtier that has a worser stewardship than my current steward claimed he could be a better steward.

It happened me only once.

Ummm... yea. Well, when I signed up for the forum I disabled that. I figured it was just one more place I'd constantly need to check for messages. Just in case.

Of course it makes things a bit awkward now.

As a moderator, do you have access to the e-mail address I used when joining the forum? If so, it is my work address and I will get anything sent to me there.

If not, I might just need to toggle PM on... at least temporarily. :)

Well, I got my work done. Back to the missus. I can answer any replies tomorrow.

I've had this event come up for my 15 year old son...

Sure he was better at the position, but still not able to be assigned. (He had just finished his education)

Another thing about this event - you should be able to give the person the position via the event - that should stop their moaning.

Had he a clergy education and was it to become the chaplain ? In this case, it will be fix in the next patch :)

Otherwise, it shouldn't happen !

I have had the same problem as the poster where crappy stupid people asked me for positions. I just assumed that the event just depicted the whiney people of the time (and today - it is human nature) who wanted to get higher even though they were not qualified, but thought they were. Was I wrong to think this?

I've had this several times too, and that was my assumption as well. I sort of like the event this way, though I would prefer it if it was keyed to personality traits more.

Doesn´t education play a part in this? Or is it only keeping courtiers from complaining?

If you start to get events saying that “I could be a better steward/marshal/etc.” then this means that you should probably consider appointing that person as an officer (and if you don’t, he/she will probably migrate away from your court fairly soon). Note that education plays a huge role in this. Someone who is a brilliant tactician but who also has very high stewardship will not begin to clamor to replace your inferior steward, so you *will* still have to pay some attention to things.
