I'm currently playing as the Bey of Beirut, a direct vassal of the Sultanate of Persia. I control all 4 provinces within the Emirate of Galilee as well as 1 other (Tripoli). I have more than enough money to usurp said Emirate. The title is currently controlled by an Emir within the Fatimid Sultanate, so we do not belong to the same realm, and both my realm and theirs are at peace. According to all this, I should be able to usurp the Emirate of Galilee shouldn't I? Because I can't. When I examine the tooltip, the only explanation I get is a red statement that I cannot usurp a title the same rank or higher than my liege. But as I said, my liege is a Sultan! Surely I can usurp an emirate? Any ideas?

Do you have an emir that is currently owning you?

The only reason I could think this might happen is if you are the vassal of an Emir, but currently in revolt (making you temporarily appear as a direct vassal of the Sultan). In this case, your liege is still the Emir until you are actually independent.

I wondered about that, but it isn't the case any more. What happened is I declared war for independence against my Emir which did temporarily make me appear to be a vassal of the Sultan as you say. However during that war the Emir then declared his own rebellion against the Sultan making himself temporarily independent while I was still a vassal of Persia. We both lost our respective rebellions, but now that everything is at peace the Sultan still shows as my liege.

A further clue has emerged: A large rebellion has occured in the neighbouring Byzantine Empire. When attempting to snap up a county from one of the rebellious dukes, I cannot issue a declaration of war because there is a red X beside "Bey Taimur of Beirut is not in revolt." However, after double-checking I can confirm that I am not currently involved in any wars. Neither are the Sultan or my former Emir. I guess it's a bug?

Ah I feel a bit foolish, I guess I hadn't reloaded the game since those rebellions. Once i did that, it all started working fine. Thanks to Chris Everlast and perpetualmuse for trying to help me, but apparently some of us are just too dumb to be helped!
