I've been experiencing a very strange problem with my game as Germany in '36. It's the first time I've played as the Hun, and frankly, it's just not working. I start the game without territorial claims on either Austria or Poland- What the hell? I'm forced to invade Austria, even though it was historically ceded in whole the Hitler. Is there a way to lay claim to a peice of territory that I've just missed in my year of playing HoI? Or is this some weird bug?

You will get the claims through historical events. This was done due to avoid too early claiming and receiving of territory.

I didn't have claims on Austria even in '38. It sucked. Is there a chance of the historical events just not materializing?

You get the claims on Austria in the Anschluss (spelling?) event in I believe April '38, and at this time the AI Austria is given a choice beteween joining Germany or allying with it (I think those are the only two choices).

Claims on Poland are not given until the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in August '39; events will usually lead to war on August 30 (by event - you do not need to declare war).

Claims on Czechoslovakia, likewise, are given by event sometime in 1938.

Relax and start again. Play Germany historically the first time thru and do not go to war until after the Sudetenland crisis 30 Sep 38 where you get nine free doctrines. You might also want to wait until after you get the chance to peacefully split Czech with Hungary in spring 1939 which nets you more national provinces plus Czech's large resources stockpile.

Then continue to play Germany historically the first time thru: split Poland with the Soviet Union, go around the Maginot Line into Belgium, accept Vichy if it's offered.

In Eastern Europe depart a little from historical norms as you need to annex Yugoslavia in order to have a Med. port. I would also recommend DoW and annexing Bulgaria because it has some big territorial claims that interfere with future operations. Then ally with Hungary and Romania, take military control of them, share tech with them. Romania will give Germany 15K oil once a year in June when it is an ally.

You might also do a trial tech run, and just research through the Spanish Civil War event (July 18, 1936) and the Suedetenland Event, Sept. 30, 1938. Write down all the free doctrines you get with each event. Then start over and don't waste I.C.s researching these events. It's like a total of 13 of those expensive doctrines, including 2 yellow infantry and one yellow air doctrine.

The Austrian Anschluss will randomly occurr sometime in March, 1938. You will have a better chance of it succeeding if you have a lot of troops stacked on the Austrian border. Same with the Czech event.

Neither the Austrian nor the Munich event will fire if you are at war, so stay at peace until then.

There is a third option for Austria to refuse the Anschluss and Germany goes to war. This option is really painful for Germany because you don't get Austria's troops, You have to spend resources and time in taking Austria and usually Germany is not prepared for this war.

You actually do get them when you annex Austria, although not in pristine shape ;) . This is handled by the "civil war" command in the inc. files and not by the event itself.

A bigger problem is that you don't receive their resources when you are forced to declare war on the Austrians. The Anschluss and the Czechoslowakian events (split with Hungary) are a great way to get max resources on coal, steel and to a lesser extent oil before the war.

Conquer Austria?....yeah sure!

I just wanted to confirm that you DO actually get Austria's army even if (as Germany) you do declare war and invade. Upon annexation, Austria's army appears in your build queue, however it has all the damage that YOU inflicted on it....you'll need to upgrade the divisions and add manpower back into them to get them back to 100% strength. The advantage being that you were able to declare war on Poland earlier (before Anschluss fires in '38) and be that much further ahead. In my last game I had already conquered Poland and Denmark before I went after Austria followed immediately by Czechslovakia. Either wait until Anschlus fires, or go after the techs earlier and take down Poland sooner. I pick sooner because Russia falls MUCH easier if you attack pre-1941...and conquering Russia is pretty much what playing as Germany is all about.
