apparently there is an increase in the chance for getting the bandit trait if the nation gains infamy. which seems a rather odd thing to do since there already is infamy mechanic for the very same reason in place

that would make infamy and bandit effectively a double penalty for just one player’s action

i already switched away from monarchy because the bandit trait is annoying, yet now my presidents are keep on getting this trait constantly. just came into office, a few years later: bandit

and there even is no counterpart to this trait that actually increases the cooldown for infamy. instead, the only diplomacy related bonus is just an increase of 10%. consequently, a leader should get double as fast infamy cooldown for keeping the infamy level at respective long enough before going on an imperialist spree

is something wrong with your rng or did you really increase the chance for getting the bandit trait if the nation gains infamy? because that would be a very odd thing to do since you’ve already put the infamy mechanic for the very same reason in place

ps: your forum software classifies „PLUS TEN PERCENT“ as spam. which obviously seems just as odd as the bandit trait probability!
Lol, did you mad lad just created your account because of the bandit trait?

This is telling about the pain this trait is, what does it even mean to have a bandit Queen Victoria? Did she stole some guard furry hat?

well, i guess the devs don’t read the steam forums so yes

given how severe the penalty is, the bandit trait has to be tied to comparably severe actions the character takes. not for common gameplay like expanding dominion

The community team read them. (Reluctantly, because Steam forums are routinely awful.)

The devs don't, because wading through stinking effluent in search of the odd sub-carat diamond is not a productive use of their time.

Leader traits should all be removed until they're not some abortive 'feature' entirely random.
There is certainly a random element, but that is a fine mechanic for EU4 rulers, so I don't mind that.

I have noticed though that doing actions can create a trait that helps you do them more. So for example if you colonise a lot your ruler is likely to get a better and better colonial trait (and maybe to develop one if they didn't have one initially). I assume the OP has found a similar mechanic for infamy/bandit.

Personally I like that your actions in one part of the game have consequences in another part (in this case that you want to keep that ruler in power/get them out ASAP). I'm not so sure about this exact mechanic with the bandit trait though as it seems to incentivise you to do fighting in bursts (as a monarch gets old, shortly before election cycles, etc).

this time a tried a different approach by shifting the smaller expansions to the top of the to-do list as long as the ruler is still young, et voilà; no bandits anymore. i focused on staying <25%, and once the ruler was of old age and already got a lot of traits i then went subjugating the big fishes like japan, brauil etc.

this way i got to keep the historical monarchs which tend to have better stats while nevertheless expanding the empire :)

Bandit on rulers is irritating to me for a different reason.

under default settings, you get no notification that you acquired it. (May be changed on the most recent beta patch, but I haven’t checked) for the first month I played the game, I assumed I was not seeing it on heirs in monarchies. I didn’t even know it was spawning in.

And with no notifications, I’m sometimes sitting there going “why u no decay, infamy?” Until I realize my ruler has had the trait for two years without me knowing it.

Since the trait seems to fire from infamy, having a notification telling the player in a diagetic way that their ruler’s behavior has consequences would be nice.

It should probably be two traits, with "bandit" representing a bloody or "lowborn that seized power" past history that makes you a little unfit for polite society, and something like "aggressor" for what rulers that expand rapidly and have high infamy get, and makes countries more likely to band together to oppose further expansionism.
