Save scumming in Iron man is not hard if you know anything about computers, but the lag the auto saves introduce is just too much to have a enjoyable game left for me.

Right. 100% ironman is actually not very realistic. You might just misclick something and set off a terrible chain of events. Is that realistic? No. If you were to insult your neighboring Emperor, advisers would step in and reason with you. In CK2 ironman, it's an accidental click of a button and boom. Sent. No way to recover it.

Or if you find out that hey, the AI moved all your forces in OB West to Copenhagen. ALL of them. Every single brigade. So that invasion coming in is now unopposed.

Or the AI USA managed to invade mainland Japan 2 months after Pearl Harbor and now are threatening to take them out of the war before you can get your paratroopers over to supplement the tiny forces they have on their island. Also the Japs are too friggin' dumb to move forces from the mainland back to the home islands, even after you defeated the Soviets for them.

Or the AI put all your transport ships into the same stack as one of your SAGs, even though you didn't give it control of your OOB, and now you can't seem to undo that for some reason.

Or the US landed in Spain but no one told you, and of course the Spanish AI has all it's forces in North Africa leaving literally a single garrison regiment in Europe, so now you've gotta go back and send your paratroopers to Spain while you wait for a corps of YOUR guys to arrive so you can bail them out.

Or you're playing a country with government controlled press and yet there's a "Parliamentary scandal" event that cripples your already damaged leadership.

I don't really get the achievement bit. If I go in and change province names that will change the checksum and invalidate the game from getting any achievements? If I use someone's custom made maya sprites that will invalidate the game?

I imagine I will do ironman as that will make me pay attention. However it sounds like I will never have any achievements. :p

I don't care about achievements, and I have enough self-control to avoid cheating. Plus I don't like the constant saving, it really breaks the flow of the game for me.

so I guess that makes me anti Ironman.

In HOI3, I normally make saves about twice a year. That means replaying, on average, about 3 months of the game if I decide to reload. The incentive to reload has to be a lot more than the tedium of repeating the same moves over again for 3 months of the game, so reloading is not something to be done for trivial reasons like a routine random event or a single failed combat. I've suffered through a ridiculous number of Parliamentary Scandals, Major Strikes, Underground Press, Assassination attempts on ministers, and various other random events without reloading. When you get hit with 3 of them in rapid succession during the month that you're mobilizing for war, and you're looking at 3+ months to burn off the combined Dissent while your initial mobilization bonus expires, THEN it's reload time.

The down sides of Ironman mode: repeated stops and stutters as it auto-saves, and no ability to fix problems if/when the AI does something monumentally stupid, make it unappealing. The advantage, achievements, don't interest me in the least. I don't need a silver star on my homework assignment to tell me that I've been a good little boy.

Yeah, continual slow-downs every few days just aren't worth it. If they introduced a way of implementing Ironman that didn't do this I'd be much more inclined to use it.

I was Anti-Ironman and now I'm Pro-Ironman.

I'm simply more focused with that option “on” and have no excuses that I misclicked something, or that I didn’t know that it works like that, etc. (even if that is true, it makes the game more interesting as it helps the AI). Also I don’t see a difference while plying on my PC performance-wise.

My first game will be Ironman as Italy, mistakes will be historically plausible ;)

BTW. You can (at least should be able to) play ironman with mods, simply achievements don’t work.
