You selects a sea-zone. Push the comission privateers button and there they are. After that they work as regular pirates which means they attack anybody who enters. You get no special perks from them.

Well, u get decreased relations with the nation u are targetting, who is losing money to the pirate actions who are taking all the profits :D

I think it'd be neat if you'd get a small revenue from privateers - after all, they were historically not only raiders to attack foreign powers, but also (although to a lesser extent) to cut some chucks out of the competition and funnel them "home". It would be even neater if your hired guns could be set to attack certain countries' ships only, as well. "Leave the Portuguese alone, we need them in our future war. But rid the seas of the pesky English." Well, maybe I am too influenced by the oldie game Pirates!, but I am wondering if the commissioned, anarchic form of privateers currently in the game holds true to their historic counterparts.

Intercepting colonists through privateers or military forces would be a neat feature as well. I always found it awkward when a country I am fighting a bitter war with sends hordes of colonists through my territory. Of course, there are not steel-eyed royal guards fending off invaders along the border every 5 yards, but eventually they must meet someone, even in rather uninhabited lands. Prohibiting movement through provinces with enemy armies (i.e. from a country you are at war with, or have relations below -150) would do a great deal as well.

I discovered that you can create privateers in any body of water big enough to have an open water graphic. This includes the Great Lakes, Lake Lagoda, the Caspian Sea...you get the idea.

The lovely part of this little quirk is that there are no ports on these bodies of water, so the pirates will keep on sucking ducats away from the locals forever.

That is, unless the poor swines in Lake Lagoda are destroyed when it becomes ice packed in the winter :D

Even if the AI can see who is putting pirates in their waters and we can't, I don't see it as such a bad 'cheat' on the part of the AI. How else can you muck up somebody's income, sink their ships and generally make them feel unwelcome without a war? Is it certain that your relations suffer?

Pirates in the Great Lakes, and others that's kind of neat, though eventually I'd imagine attrition would end their services.

I´ve noticed this pirates on big lakes as well but I thought paradox was supposed to remove it much in the way they removed pirates on rivers.:(

They are in general way too overpowered!!

Use em in 1400 and watch em defeat any armada by spamming them into the seazone with the enemy fleet.
Listen to when the enemy fleet defeats the pirates, then send new ones..over and over again until he is dead.

I haven't played EU2 enough to be sure, but in EU there was what I consider a bug: big bodies of water _not connected_ to any other, like the Caspian and the Great Lakes, where considered part of the 'big oceans', i.e., you saw colonies appearing in its shores when the colonists shoudn't have been able to reach there. It was of great help to get North America converted into a real mess of many-coloured colonies all mixed...

No Alatriste that is not a bug, it's a game feature. The Great lakes and the siberian provinces have different colonisation rules to all the other provinces in EU. You can colonise them even if you don't have a city next to the province.

The problem with Privateers was the decision to start them at Naval tech 19. Even in 1419. Yes, it's necessary for blockades. But it means they can shatter everything for 100-150 years. And ... 25 ducats?! I can't buy 2 of my OWN warships for that much, how do I hire an independent so much cheaper? Given that I'm basically declaring a stealth war on whoever I choose, the price for privateers should be the price for your warships, +10%. And if we have to leave them at tech 19, their DP sliders should be adjusted to drop their morale as low as possible. These aren't professional soldiers.

A lockout on privateers is needed, being able to spam them into a seazone is kinda badass..

It has a most terrifying effect to be honest..
For example Christobal Colon might not like going into the new world when all the road there is mined by pirates bought by everyone else to see you fall.
