As for the Senate, I'd say Weaver for Jacobia, Bottlesworth for St. Brendans (my home province...although I wouldn't have any problems with Fitzpatrik, especially if the VAT's getting support in the GA), and Ashdown for Gloriana.

The Ashdown/Bottlesworth/Weaver ticket is getting a lot of support, but let me point out that it doesn't contain a female candidate, yet we have two available. Which is another reason I support Fitzpatrik -- if we go with Ashdown and Bottlesworth, we're doubling down on the military vote to the exclusion of the (much larger) female population. Not that I don't consider the military vote of tantamount importance, but, if I could toot my own horn for a second, I think we're doing fairly well in that regard already.

We shouldn't support a female candidate just because she's female. We should support candidates because of their merit.

I don't disagree, Captain, but I don't think any of our potential candidates are incompetent. Between Gloriana and St. Brendan, we have three options: a female/female ticket, a male/female ticket, and a male/male ticket. If we select a male/male ticket, we also get a military/military ticket on the issues.

My question is, why support a male/male, military/military ticket when 1) half of that ticket will do to further our military goals, 2) if I'm right and the military supports our reforms (and given that a chief component of that is raising pay rates significantly, I expect I am right) we should already have the military vote, and 3) by replacing half of that ticket with a woman we can broaden the base of support for our party?

Fitzpatrick and Ashdown definately have my support. It's a coin flip for me between Weaver and Canaff. Any idea which one would draw more support in their province?

I'm going to weigh in on this...

For Gloriana I believe it should be Paulette Martin. I'll tell you why. She owns a shipping company, so she knows what it is like to run a business and keep costs down while giving quality service to her customers. Her support base is the urban middle class, but I personally think her support base is wider than that. Being a woman is immaterial to me. She also has a support base with business owners, just like Paton Ashdown does, even though it doesn't say so. She, I believe brings more to the table than he does in Gloriana.

For St. Brendanstown I think Hugh Bottlesworth. Being from the local legislature he already has experience that the movie star woman just doesn't bring. 'Nuff said there.

For Jacobia I think it ought to be Alfred Canaff. He brings the middle class and law enforcement to the table while the other fellow brings only fiscal conservatives and civil libertarians to the table. Not that such is necessarily bad, but I just think Canaff is the better choice.

Well, we are fairly split on Canaff vs. Weaver and Bottlesworth vs. Fitzpatrik. Ashdown has almost unaminous support. Since we are going with Ashdown, I don't see a strong need to double up our military men. Our agenda for the military is going well, and we should have their support anyway.

Fitzpatrik has name recognition, and she draws from both the urban poor and the rich. A local legislator will have some built in support, but probably not as broad. All Fitzpatrik has to do is avoid a critical error and she should do fine. Celebrities seem to do well in elections (Reagan, Sonny Bono, Arnold, Jesse the Body, and more). Plus I view striking down the VAT at this moment to be a critical issue.

That leaves Canaff and Weaver in Jacobia. Canaff is a prosecuter and probably has more name recognition than Weaver, a career bureaucrat. Yet, Jacobia has the most radical politics of the island, so I don't know how well his middle class message will be recieved. I'm leaning towards Weaver since, while his support base might normally be a bit more marginalized, here it should be more widely accepted.

So Ashdown, Fitzpatrik, Weaver.

We don't need to strike down VAT in the Senate as it won't make it through the Assembly. Furthermore, the people supporting these candidates don't automatically support what we do in the GA and will thus not automatically vote UP next elections.

Well, Captain Tulp, I was under the impression that you supported the VAT. By my count, the two left wingers (Josephus and Gonzo), the UEF rep, and yourself were all in support of the VAT. Myself, Tilly, Marine, and Wellesford are on the record as opposing it. That'sa 4-4 tie. With Glasser inactive. While a tie won't pass a bill, if just one opposition member missed the vote it could pass.

The UP will most likely not exist next term - this party was set up to handle one term and the major issues there of. If you pledged to oppose the VAT, then I could see my way towards bumping up Bottlesworth - but I'd be strongly inclined to support Martin over Ashdown then. No need to have two military men in the Senate - we've got their support buttoned up pretty well I would think.

I"m not sure how I could send people to Tilapia to apprehend the criminals who did it. Tilapia is a seperate and soveriegn nation. I doubt they would be appreciative of such...I'll probably have to ask permission from them to send investigators...which I will do of course. But I can't FORCE them to allow them into the country.

So many of the Party members are tied up with constitutionally incompatible positions that your options are severely limited. I believe Per Talbott is the only acceptable choice for VP.
