Please, Commander, explain to us ignorant fools how ending conscription cannot save money. We're all eager to learn.
Maybe because to make up for that loss of firepower you need better weapons? Which cost money? Maybe because it means you need to pay the proffesional soldiers more? Yes it will save money but not on the short run. It's saving money on the long term but we need the money now, not in 6 terms. Furthermore, it will take atleast 3 terms to effectively end the conscription.
Im opposed to ending conscription. Frankly I served, and I think it should be mandatory. Then everyone has the right to their oppinion on the military, those who haven't served will not have the experiences we had. Sure it is not easy, but it does build character.
Just because one generation had to serve does not mean it is a good idea. Conscript armies are simply not as effective as all-volunteer armies. Also, given the proposed reduction, we will have too many conscripts.
If some sort of national service is thought to be necessary, I recommend we support the following:
Each person, upon reaching their 18 birthday, shall choose between:
Ten weeks basic training and membership in the active reserve for three years; or six months non-military public service.
This would give our youth a taste of committment to their nation.

You know mr. Voshkod it's not a bad idea, these public works.
Mr. Vilms, conscripts are worthless in combat, they may be useful somewhere in Africa, but as we could see in Bosnia, they don't survive in real combat, and often these men don't think anything good about goverment that forced them to serve whole year somewhere with strict discipline, eating food that isn't very different from what I give to my dogs. Public works isn't such a bad idea, they would make it easier for cities to keep their streets clean, and these men could stay home with their family.

Mr. Marine, Mr. Vilms, are you going to protest the cuts yes or no? After examining the budget I've spotted that we can also cut in unemployement benefits and farmsubsidies.

I'm for downsizing the Military as well, however I have tried to make you understand that if we want to downsize the Military it will at first cost money. It's like investing, you have to put money in a company before you can earn bucks.

And to Tulp: I plan on calling for a vote on a change to the budget after it passes. It will end the Estate Tax, and move funds into the military.
