The cabinet for Term XI meets here. The President, cabinet ministers, and the Commissioner of Justice are always welcome. Deputy Ministers can be given a cabinet pass by their minister. Others can attend by invitation only.

Congratulations to all newly appointed cabinet members. Please meet your ministry staff and get your offices set up. (OOC: open a term XI thread or two for your ministry - for some ministries it is convenient to have both a public an private thread.)

When you get that accomplished, please check in here so we can work out who should be doing what. If something urgent comes up that is in your ministry's responsibility, feel free to take action immediately, but then please let the rest of the cabinet know what is going on and the steps you are taking.

Glad to see that most of you are settling in in your new offices. Please take a look at my campaign speeches about the plans for you ministry to look for some things to consider in your initial programs. If it is already there and you want to start it, by all means go ahead. If you have other ideas or improvements, then I will leave it to your judgment whether you should just initiate it, or whether to bring it back here to discuss it first. Anything that requires substantial funding will have be brought up here, as we will be drafting a budget once a GA speaker is elected. One thing you should take care of as soon as possible, like I have done, is personnel appointments. We should be willing to look beyond the political class. (OOC: consider having the jobs assigned to mod-run NPC's if no player will take them.)

The key posts to be filled are:
  • Head of Pension Control Board - MESA
  • Head of Air Force - MDIS
  • CEO of ENDTech - MDIS

The open issues from last term that could use some attention would seem to be:
  • MERL - hydrocarbon exploration in Western Eutopia, coal sales, softwood tariff, labour discontent
  • MIDA - follow-up on ECB bombing, takeover and expansion of Interprovincial Highway System
  • MESA - care of Hainan Star refugees
  • MDIS - rebuilding local air superiority

I look forward to working with all of you. Anything I've forgotten?

Mr. President....Josephus logging in.

One question...regarding following up on the ECB and other things...do I have access to your previous work...[ooc: Can I assume I know what happened in your old "secure" thread?]

Good to see you! Yes, you, as sitting MIDA should have access to the secure archive.

In regards the ECB bombing, I negotiated and the Commisioner of Justice approved a deal with the operative calling himself Francisco Rio that 'Moxie' Fulder caught. When the evidence is ready, FLEA will be able to hopefully capture all the remaining 'Friends of Durruti' in a group of simultaneous pre-dawn raids. What we don't know yet is whether the information he will provide will be any good or not. Cornelius Dank, just by being in the same room as him when he was caught has probably convicted himself. He had a chance to talk first, but he clammed up, so we had no choice. It will be interesting to learn what his involvement was.

I am here, Monseiur President.

Does anyone know what happened with the Koingsee problem? Was Oil found at all, and is the investigation still happening?

Bonjour, mon ami.

No, it turned out to be some metal mining, possibly gold, as people use cyanide and mercury to extract gold from ore. I believe MESA sealed off the sources of the contamination, but feel free to check. There should be more regular patrols to look for illegal mining, but that is up to MERL.

If there is oil someplace, I would bet it is in Western Eutopia. That could have been the source of the natural gas that leaked into the cave and exploded, killing the professor and the tourists. The previous MERL ordered some prospecting, but I haven't heard anything. I had asked MESA and MERL to coordinate using some of the social aid for post-unemployment benefits to go to job training for roustabouts and other oil field workers, in case they do strike commercial quantities.

I had some ideas about getting trucks and buses to shut off idling engines, which would cut down on pollution, but that is more a provincial matter. Still, you could coordinate it.

I'll look into both of those ideas.

I was also wondering if Eutopia had the infrastructure to host the Football World Cup or even the Olympics? If we did host the World Cup, we could joint host it with Tiliapa and St Espirit, improving relations even further. It's certainly worth looking into.

Good, ideas! We have enough stadia to host the World Cup, but the automatic berth that goes to the home team would seem like the only way we could get there, so unless we offer outlandish subsidies, it would be very hard to get it. Hosting jointly with our neighbors is a good idea, but I think we are going to have to qualify once to ever be considered. How about a challenge match between the winner of the UEFA champions league and the best South American team, with us as a neutral venue?

I don't think it would be much of a problem, Eutopia has never hosted the WC before, we have the necessary stadia, we could do it. I was also thinking about having a Cricket Series with the Windies and England, I don't suppose you would know about that sport?

Go ahead and investigate the world cup.

In regards cricket, I lived in England for four and half years, so I watched some on the telly when I was there. I even played once at church picnic. Because I had never played before, they let me bat first. The first ball was so wide the wicket keeper missed it, so we got a run without me swinging the bat, but I whiffed on the next ball and was out for one. Better than a duck. Playing the field later I did manage a catch.

Heh, I play all sports, but can never watch it.

I was also thinking of setting up a Eutopian History/Culture Festival, and getting some Cultural Exchange programs with other Nations such as Spain. I've got a lot of ideas, Monseiur President.

Since you are MTIA, could you contact the respective Governments and tell them of our plans? I'll look into the cost.

Sure, will do.

I assume the 'interesting' relates to worker discontent. The million man march would have never attracted 100,000 if everything had been fine. I expect that some workers had been noticing inflation eating into their paychecks with no raises or cost of living adjustments to compensate. I don't necessarily want to build in COLA's if the ECB will bring inflation under control, but if they don't it would make sense to index wages. The other idea was that we have, except for the march, a relatively peaceful labour scene, with no general strikes and fewer than average individual union walkouts. I have read about some countries negotiating a 'labour peace' arrangement, or no-strike contract, where in exchange for not striking, there is a bonus or other accomodation. But you are the more highly trained economist, so I will let you work something out. Perhaps it is as simple as meeting with the remaining leaders of the ECL and getting an idea about what their concerns are.

This should please you, Josephus, not you, Pierre. Apparently the St Espiritans have elected a Socialist Government, the St Espiritan Ambassador asked me to tell Monsieur President.
