For a party that espouses democracy this election seems very poorly handled. Little warning was given to party members of the election in general and less than 24 hours was given for members to come forwards as a contender in the race. The rules of the election were unclear at the start and seemed to be made up as things went on.
It seems unacceptable that the present leader of the party controls the election for the new leader. His actions may be innocent but to me it comes across as if he set things up to leave little opportunity for any serious challenge this leadership to be mounted. Whether this is true or not any appearnce of this sort of behaviour will damge the party leadership and the party as a whole.
The leadership election needs to have clear rules and be called with sufficient time for challengers to come forward and put their postions. Enough warning needs to be given so party members have a chance to vote. This all needs to be under the control of an independant person, not the party leader.
I don't want to be difficult but the party must uphold it's values in it's internal workings if it hopes to be taken seriously by the people of this country.
