Strasse clicked his tongue in that irritating manner of his.

"No. No. President? Certainly not. Let Mr. Forbes throw his towell in and I'll support him all the way.

But personally, I am less worried about who will be representing us in office, and more concerned about what exactly our little party stands for. I understand we have a platform, but what firm policy commitments can we offer to the electorate?"

Von Hapsburg speaks:
"Perhaps we should emulare the real-life conservative parties in other Western countries, for example, public prayer in schools, pro-buisness ecconomic policy, while keeping the right of the worker to form a trade union. We should also limit the role of Communist parties in our government, and engage in a policy of convincing the seceded lands to return to Eutopia peacefully. I also suggest countering anything that interfers with the institution of the family, and propose the pursual of a more, shall I say, aggersive, foreign policy?"

Hapsburg speaks further:
"On the issue of the presidential election, perhaps I could run for Vice president or premier, premier/prime minister if there is such a position. I am not, I repeat NOT a socialist, that is clear, though I am known to be only slightly right-of-center. I believe there is need for a person to broker compromise with the other parties in Parliament, and I suppose I could be suited for the job, living in a family in which my parents are Communists and my uncle a social conservative.

"I rather think that our campaign should run fairly firmly along the lines of a traditional conservative party. Patriotism, freedom from the state and opportunity are all important conservative messages that we should put to the people. But I rather think that we should be trying to broaden our horizons. Perhaps by adding justice and community to a pledge card of some kind, we could really put ourselves forward as a potent weapon against the socialising instincts of the current governing institutions by using their own weapons against them.

I have briefly detailed my vision of the party's message (with a few policy suggestions) in this document;"

Patriotism - compulsory singing of national anthem for school children; greater pervasion of Eutopian flag in all national institutions; emphasis on Eutopian values, not the values of majority ethnic communities (broad-brush ideas like fair-play and tolerance).

Freedom - Lower taxation; cutting back on proportion of national income spent by the state (no talk of 'austerity' budgets, but gradual reduction); encourage privatisation of state industries and free enterprise; restriction of the power of the unions; give people more freedom to go private in education (perhaps by giving people the value of an average state education in some 'voucher' scheme.

Opportunity - Re-skilling of workers laid off by privitisation and unemployment; adult-education schemes for those let down by education in the past; affirm an emphasis on education for a job in life - not compulsory useless 'raw' knowledge; reform anti-monopoly laws.

Justice - Tougher sentences for criminals; make the death penalty a matter of conscience for a free-vote in GA; justice for unborn foetuses by reviewing abortion laws; affirm an emphasis on protecting the victims of crime rather than helping the criminals; argue that crime can be reduced by providing 'opportunity'.

Community - Emphasis on cross-cultural community rather than balkanisation into individual ethnic groups; community should deal with social problems within itself rather than relying on state; strong committment to Churches and other institutions as backbones of the nation's morality; solving of environmental problems by community recycling schemes.

"Please feel free to comment."

I like your platform, Mr. Strasse. Many of the planks on there I was going to suggest myself today.

Quick Summary/Synthesis on the Platform:

Crime, Terrorism, and Law and Order:
Previous administrations have been far too lenient on these grounds. Most crime falls under the provincial sphere, but there are still things that can be done: increase funding for police, ramp up our anti-terror units and domestic intelligence (so we are not caught off guard as we were this term), crack down on youth hooliganism, gangs, and such by banning Topa Root and interdicting the flow of already illegal drugs. Officially reinstating the death penalty (with safeguards to prevent what happened when I was President).

The Economy:
Our object is to promote growth and to declare war on unemployment. To this end, we must improve our internal infrastructure, provide programs to retrain those unemployed affected by the collapse of their industry, reduce the power of corrupt union bosses, and ensure that all who want a university education in this country may receive one. Balancing the budget and lowering taxes would be good too, but that's a matter for later.

Morality:
Bring back values to government--freer, more open government. Equality of opportunity (see above) and a care for the common man. And the abortion issue.

Unity:
Encourage and foster a Eutopian (but not an Anglo) spirit, not dividing our country among purely racial and ethnic lines (the sorts of things that brought the downfall of the Second Republic and the youth violence endemic in today's society). Encourage a reunification of the island (primarily with St. Espirit) through CAFTA. Hopefully, eventually, our wayward brothers in Tilapia may be brought back into the fold (perhaps through the monarchy).

Once again a letter is delivered.

TO: the Conservative Union for EUtopia, CUE HQ
FROM: Admiral Henry J. Tulp

Fellow members, I think that we should make the New Bengal-case a spearpoint in our campaign, those are citizens that want to become Eutopian, they should get that chance.

"I think we can work together with these, Professor. But I do have a few comments that I think need reworking. First of these is the death penalty. I, too, agree with your stance on execution of vicious criminals, but we should not scare away moderate voters but focusing our strategy so individually on reintroducing such a controversial punishment. The purpose of the party is to agglomerate interests, so I think my suggestion of allowing a free vote on the reintroduction of the death penalty in the GA next term is far more sensible.

I really think the Morality issue should be included in our party programme. We are conservatives after all. If we cannot appeal to the good honest church-goer who has seen abortion become a method of contraception in so many countries in the world, and if we can't stand up for the good traditional values that bind us all together, I don't know what we can do.

With ammendments from the Professor's ideas, I present to you a platform that I think will work for our party. It's absolutely necessary we get it confirmed and published soon so we can get out around the island and make our intentions known;

Patriotism - compulsory singing of national anthem for school children; greater pervasion of Eutopian flag in all national institutions; emphasis on Eutopian values, not the values of majority ethnic communities; Eutopia shouldn't be defined as Anglo and should not be divided along ethnic and racial lines; strong line in convincing Tilapia and St. Esperit to reunify the island.

Freedom - Lower taxation; gradual cutting back on proportion of national income spent by the state; encourage privatisation of state industries and free enterprise; reform of union law to increase their democratic worth and decrease power of corrupt union bosses; give people more freedom to go private in education (by giving people the value of an average state education in a 'voucher' scheme); less red-tape for small business.

Opportunity - Re-skilling of workers laid off by privatisation and unemployment; adult-education literary and numeracy schemes for those let down by education in the past; emphasis on education for a job in life - not compulsory useless 'raw' knowledge; reform anti-monopoly laws; improve infrastructure;

Justice - Tougher sentences for criminals; make the death penalty a matter of conscience for a free-vote in GA; affirm an emphasis on protecting the victims of crime rather than helping the criminals; crime can be reduced by providing 'opportunity'; more funding for police officers - more and better equipment for enlarged anti-terror and domestic intelligence units; organised crack down on yob culture - hooligans can be tamed by stronger community relations; a ban on Topa root and harsher punishments for drug dealers, along with stronger controls against illegal drug trafficking.

Community - Emphasis on cross-cultural community rather than balkanisation into individual ethnic groups; community should deal with social problems within itself rather than relying on state; strong committment to Churches and other institutions as backbones of the nation's morality; solving of environmental problems by community recycling schemes; the idea of common values and a national community should be emphasised to try and bring St. Espirit and Tilapia back into the fold.

Morality - A review of abortion laws in light of medical advances - on no account should abortion become a method of contraception; accountable, hard-working figures in government; charity laws relaxed and tax breaks for doners; rich have a responsibility to care for poor.

"In regards to Eutopian unity... how far is everyone here willing to go in order to reunite this island? Just how far? I am willing to go to the brink of war and beyond, but I have my doubts that the rest of Eutopia would be willing to walk alongside or even just come along for the ride.

We need to determine, maybe not in public, but among us, exactly how far we are willing to go in order to achieve complete Eutopian unity."

Roger then calmly raised a finger and pointed it towards the letter lying open on the table before him. "Furthermore, I utmostly agree with Admiral Tulp on the New Bengal issue. We must ensure that these people are given every opportunity to become part of our nation and, to a point, we should do everything in our power to encourage and even enforce it. I don't like our treatment of the dissidents in Tilapia and St. Esprit, for we are treating them as legitimate nations. They are Eutopian first and foremost, and must be shown that it is the will of the Eutopian people that this island be made whole once more, under the Eutopian rule. However, we could come to some agreement over a constitutional monarchy, with the royal family of Tilapia reigning as a severely limited monarch, a position much advocated by this party (the monarchy itself, not necessarily the Tilapian royal family holding the position)."

"Well I've opened our campaign trail. Sorry if you think I jumped the gun, but it needed doing. The other parties had already hit the trail and were half-way over the hill. Perhaps I could have some comments on the proposed manifesto?

In regards to this discussion about New Bengalia and a re-unification of Eutopia, I'm uncertain if I agree with your language. Certainly proactive attempts should be made to reinvolve St. Esprit and Tilapia in our political processes. They are Eutopians, they should not be made to feel like traitors. Any talk of 'enforcement' or 'the will of the Eutopian people' will simply play into the hands of those extremists who want to keep the island apart to satisfy their own narrow political agendas.

The best way to bring our island closer together is not to be hostile or grumpy, but rather to have a healthy dialogue with those Eutopians living outside our borders and to strengthen economic ties with them.

I personally agree with the idea of re-unifying Eutopia under the monarchy, but think it should be left out of this campaign altogether. The monarchy is not in the minds of the people right now. Instead we have to push home our excellent vision of a Eutopia ruled outside the excesses of the socialists and the liberals. We must push home our vision of a Eutopia truly ruled by the people."

No, it wasn't jumping the gun at all. Thanks for taking the initiative.

I'll probably be out on the campaign trail in force myself starting tomorrow.

As for the reunification issue...I certainly don't want war if it can be avoided, and I think it can. Gradual reunification by trade, plus a personal union with Tilapia if feasible. If the Tilapians don't want to go along, well it's their perogative to be stubborn bastards. If they want to screw themselves over, that's their decision. But they cannot be allowed to drag New Bengal down with them. We need to strongly press the Tilapians for a referendum in New Bengal...and that should be our party line.

I confirm my candidacy as VicePresident. Also, we should also introduce the issue of the recent terrorist attacks. I believe we should collaborate with other countries, especially the US, in this respect.

"Per von Hapsburg, may I commend you on your most recent speech, if I do not do so on your first.

While your second was certainly an effective summary of what our party stands for, your opening speech seems to me to be a little.. shall we say jingoistic?

I'm all for making grand gestures - but perhaps you should tone down the rhetoric on following 'our American allies'. As far as I last knew, our relations were still frosty at best, so I doubt that much support can be attracted by taking a line that simply encourages an infectious guffaw from those that react to it.

Incidently, I was wondering if anyone else had considered making a speech or two about our party?"

btw, I edited the speech to mean "brothers", which is an informal term of endearment, as opposed to "ally' which connotates warm formal relations

"Indeed Admiral. Know that you have all our thoughts - we sincerely hope that things turn out well. And if there is anything we can do. Just ask."

A simple smile crossed Strasse's face.

"As for the US, Per von Hapsburg. Indeed, detente is necessary. But it is not something we should be making party political points on, unless we are highlighting the difference between us - the capitalist, free market party which hopes for closer trading relations with the rest of the world - and them - the socialist, dependancy culture parties with hopes only for an opportunity to impose damaging tariff barriers.

I really think we need to be stirring up the image of the UMP as being ESA-lite. Socialism without the backbone. I will make a speech this afternoon, and perhaps we can use the theme to undermine de Fourgéres position. He is officially endorsed by the ESA after all."
