I just got this game the other day, it's great and I've been completely hooked. While I'm still learning some things, I think I've got most of the game mechanics under control.

I have one question about prisoners though. I found the part in the ledger that shows prisoners you hold and citizens of yours that are being held captive elsewhere, no problems there. During one battle, however, I managed to capture a general and the text box says later I could either execute him or ransom him.

My questions are as follows:

1) How do I execute prisoners when I don't get the choice prompt (like after a religious desecration)?

2) Is it possible to be pro-active with the ransoming of other nations' prisoners? If not, will they ever come talk to me regarding them? I have a few high level diplomats (8 charisma, 8 finesse, etc.) and I'm curious why the AI never contacts me about them.

Thanks!

1) If I'm not mistaken (I'll go find out for sure), you can assassinate captured characters in the diplomacy (your nation) "take action" button (i.e. the same way you'd kill your own guys). You can find the names of people you've captured in the ledger under country_overview > foreign_characters.

2) Not really. They have to offer ransom for the person if I'm not mistaken, and I'm not sure what affects the AI's decision to do so right this minute, although I'm also curious to know - anybody?

After trying it out, you can indeed. The only problem is it's just as hard as taking him out as the enemy. You'd think assassinating a prisoner would be a sure thing, but my guy failed and was discovered.

LOL, I didn't know that.

I've just been keeping my prisoners in chains forever. Eventually some of them will switch to your side, sometimes you can gain a useful character that way.

Question: if you succeed, do you get the 2-year ban on "covert" operations?

Well, others have answered your questions, but I can comment on your prisoner's oddity :) ...

Likely, he had low loyalty to his home country, which was why he was sent in the first place (in hopes that you'd do just this, so he doesn't stir up problems at home), and why they don't ask for him back.
