F11 takes a screenshot of the current window. I believe F12 takes a map screenshot, but I've been wrong before.

As for save location, it should be in your Sengoku/Screenshots folder, but some people have reported finding them elsewhere... I'll update this post if I can find the thread where people were talking about it.

Actually their ridiculous default folder was program files on my machine!

It's a problem with the microsoft architecture by the way, but one it would be good to see paradox work around.

By the way, F12 makes a map screenshot, but a nonsensical one, cos it doesn't display the in-game map mode you are using and it doesn't display any text either.

The map screenshot should show the map in clan colors, with shift, only your clan will be drawn. This was bugged but has been fixed in the patch.

Ok and thanks. I was a bit confused when I first saw at the screenshot.

Actually it isn't a 'problem' with the MS architecture, it is a problem that Paradox have not listened to MS best practice on how to do this. I know I've been giving Paradox a hard time in other threads about this but it is a problem that very many software developers are still stuck in. Storing user data in the programs directory is an old, lazy way of thinking and is a habit that seems to be very hard to break. MS has included API calls to get a more appropriate directory but many devs still aren't using it. All user data should be stored in the users/myusername or users/public directory - so with Win7 MS is applying a bit more force to this rule by directing things into AppData.

Oh, so it isn't to do with MS blocking you from saving to program files then? Funny you used to be able to do this/can do this on other OS's.

By the way AppData is nasty, its a hidden file buried way down the tree, at least in Vista.

More deeply the problem is that given the way MS changed things I now have about half a dozen places to look for my files when using new software, and in quite a few cases (not noticed with paradox yet) various saveable files from the same game are stored in different places.

MS isn't blocking you from saving to program files, the user's profile is. If the user opened security on their profile in a way that violates best practices then programs could write to the program files directory. However, since the default is to lock down program files (and rightly so), when a program tries to save there it goes to AppData in the Users directory.

AppData is a nasty place if the program wants users to be able to access the data manually. That's why MS has written umpteen white papers on best practice and the right system variables to use to save things to more public places in the Users directory. Of course Windows developers don't read MS's white papers and best practice technical briefs so every game developer and program developer seems to scatter their crap all over your hard drive or in several different folders within the Users dir. More deeply the problem isn't MS, it is developers doing a bunch of different things and not following the recommendations made by MS. I believe their recommendation is: %USERPROFILE%\Saved games

We could go over and over this and not agree I suspect. Part of the problem is that many games I (still) play were written before MS changed their system architecture.

I'll make just one more point - why direct failed saves to program files to AppData (by default) why not somewhere more user friendly?

Completely agree. I'm very glad that MS finally started enforcing some proper data architecture as it will most certainly assist in security, and I still think that any game that has been developed post Vista (2006-7) should probably fix their code to address this policy, but Microsoft failed pretty miserably with the location for the data being in a hidden dir. On the other hand, it kinda smacks developers in the a$$ for not getting their act together.

Well personally I like my screenshots and save games to actually be in the folder of the game, rather then being carted off the to My Games folder or whatever... so I support the Paradox way of doing things, if it works. Tossing files belonging to the same program into two completely different directories is just a very silly standard by Microsoft if you ask me.

Actually it is the generally accepted best practice, not a Microsoft standard. It doesn't have the same level of user friendliness of saving to Program Files though but mostly because of enculturation. Most of us prefer saving to Program Files because that's what we're used to, being long time Windows users. If everything got saved to your Save Games folder and you never had to look in your program files directory you'd probably prefer that too. If you were a Mac or a Linux user you'd probably feel differently.

If you want your saves to go into your Program Files directory just change the permissions (not recommended for obvious security reasons).

As a long time microsoft OS user I still prefer to make my own directories and organization. Paradox' way of doing things works fine for me, but games and programs that use 'best practice' usually end up clogging up my purposely anaemic C: partition.
