Primogeniture versus Ultigeniture

I'm playing as a Welsh king of Ireland and I'm trying to get out of gavelkind(as you would) and I can, right now, get Ultigeniture or I can wait and nab primogeniture when I have a thousand prestige. I have over 700 prestige so it wouldn't take too long and my ruler is young(just came of age).

What should I do?

Simplest and advised? Wait for Primogeniture. Possibly more interesting? Ultimo. I've never actually played a game with Ultimogeniture.

If only Gavelkind would actually split-up demesnes sanely, I wouldn't mind playing it. It does mean brothers shall forever hate each other or die, though.

I presumed that y'all would say that and that's what I planned to do. I just Wanted an expert opinion.

Yep, Ultimogeniture is youngest child inherits. The principle advantage is that each new ruler will typically live longer due to taking over at a younger age, which means huge long reign opinion bonuses. Disadvantages include a higher likelihood of regencies due to children inheriting and a less optimal pattern for female rulers due to limited childbearing years. You can control the regency risk somewhat if you're a woman or if you're a man and are willing to do what it takes to marry a woman who can't have any more children after a certain point. On the whole I suspect Ultimogeniture is actually a little better than Primogeniture, though when it's available Elective is still my overall preference.

Youngest eligible child inherits. Advantage: Long reigns.

I believe the Mongols show up with Ultimogeniture, it's why there's always a succession of Child Khans in the Steppes until they convert.

I think there is also an added gamey bonus for ultimogeniture in relation to genetics; you can keep having children until you get one with the proper trait (genius, strong, etc.) Then you can kill your wife and have your super heir inherit (as opposed to constantly assassinating your oldest child until you get one you like). But if you want to be gamey, elective is really just better (as long as you have a stable realm).

Shame there's no ultimogeniture that works like seniority, where the youngest member of the dynasty would inherit. That'd make it more interesting, I'd claim (although I can totally see why nobody would normally use this. Regencies all the time ^^; ).
